This is an incredibly moving picture. I cry every time I watch this movie. It's fairly confusing on first watch, and needs to be re-viewed multiple times to even begin forming a semblance of understanding, but that's not a negative mark against it at all. I feel this is Hugh Jackmans most amazing performance of his entire career, and Rachel Weiss as well for that matter. It's a real tragedy that it didn't do well upon release. Both actors should've been awarded an Oscar for this film. Do yourself a favor and watch it asap if you haven't had the pleasure of seeing it.

it is not complicated. The meanings and images used are clear. The telescope scene immediately tells you where the movie is going. The only thing for debate is how you interpret the space bubble. I was surprised that it was not a metaphor for his trapped and mind soul but a real spaceship. I like it more as symbol for his mind.

I hope Aronofsky does not remake this film, as he's suggested. I love the creative visuals they were forced into with a smaller budget. I can't imagine a different cast. When I first heard about the movie, director, and (eventual) cast, I was fairly interested in seeing it. However, when the trailers came out, I got the impression it wasn't 'sci-fi' as much as just a sappy 1500s romance story. Fast forward to the beginning of 2014. The girl I'd been dating for 5 years had spent the last 4 of that with triple-negative breast cancer. Her eventual death from it was almost a certainty, but something of which I'd never been willing to come to terms. One Saturday I happened to come across The Fountain on TV and decided to watch. Needless to say, the movie hit me like a ton of bricks, bringing me to tears for the first time in my adult life. My girlfriend passed away a couple months later. At some point I bought a copy of the movie while I was desperate to hang on to anything that reminded me of her. Over 6 years later I've not even been able to take the movie out of the cellophane to watch it again.

I'll be honest: this movie is my favourite movie of all time. I get told constantly that such an opinion is more than a little bit ridiculous. After all, I'm putting it above so many other masterpieces of cinema. But in all honesty, despite how pretentious the film might seem, no other movie has had such a profound emotional effect upon me. No matter the failure that The Fountain faced, I couldn't be happier that it was made, because seeing it truly changed me as a person and made me more accepting of death as a natural process.

You put it over way less movies than the people you talk to make you believe it to be. It's a better movie than it's reception and there are tons out there which have a better reputation than they deserve. In a fair world these people would just nod when you say that and think themselfs "duh!". Also, to be nitpicky, "favorite" movie doesn't mean "best" movie, if these people don't know the distinction of the two terms, they're not worth taking part in discussions...

Before even watching this video: The Fountain has what is probably the most beautiful score ever written for a movie. Do yourself a favour and go listen to it. Edit - I just want to point out that if you pause the movie when it shows Izzy's book you can actually read it and confirm she WAS writing Tomas, the Conquistador's story, and some of the scenes we see are described in her text.

It is such a perfect coincidence [for me] that the score for this movie is the best, the best I’ve ever heard, and was created for my favorite movie of all time. But, I might add that matched with Clint Mansell’s score for The Fountain, his work for Requiem for a Dream is also as powerful and as soul reaching as the music for Arronofsky’s 2006 emotional epic.

I love this movie. To me, it doesn't matter if the past and future are "real" or are stories being written. The cycle is the point. The cycle of stories repeating themselves, of life and death, destruction and rebirth. The only way out of the cycle is to embrace it and, whether he wrote it or lived it, Tom finally accepted his place.
@havanaradio

This seems to be the main take on the movie, but I feel like the main thrust of the plot is a tragic love story drawn out to a brutal conclusion. Aronofsky's work is almost always circumscribed by extreme tragedy and irony. It's why I can usually only watch his work a few times at most, it's all just so sad. This film is in my opinion his most brutal. The movie only takes place in one timeline, the book part is simply as imagined by Izzy (and eventually by Tom). Tom accidentally discovers the key to eternal life while trying to cure Izzy. Ironically, Izzy only wants to spend her last days with Tom, and he knows it, and he still abandons her for his work. During his absence she pens a story about their relationship, telling him to finish it as her final message to him. He then is cursed to live for who knows how long, having saved literally ever single human from death except for the only person he truly loved. Imagine that. Sacrificing the last time you had with someone trying to save them, and then literally wrestling with that for eternity, unable to move past it. Eventually he commits the most poetic suicide imaginable, unable to exist anymore with this unfathomable guilt. He literally rides the tree he planted over her grave into a collapsing star while being haunted by her memory. Fuck this movie.

I saw this movie when it was released, and remembered it as a love story. I actually thought of it quite highly, but despite that didn't watch it again until recently. Just last year I convinced my wife to watch it with me again and much to my surprise... it's such a sad movie, mostly of suffering and loss. The sadness it makes you feel is deep and at times.. terrifying. I'm not sure how I had such a starkly different interpretation of it back then. I've re-watched it a few time's since and I think in the end I realize it perhaps is someplace in the middle. It IS a love story, showcasing a love that transcends time, space and even sanity. But more than anything, it is a story meant to draw out sorrow. Although it's ending is bitter sweet... the bitterness is from an overwhelming sense of despair is barely tempered by seeing two soulmates relive their lives and fall in love over and over. I think a movie like "What Dreams May Come" tell a love story with similar impact, but leave you with a little more hope in the end. I don't consider myself much a movie buff, but I do appreciate a good story. The fountain is a story with a goal. It attempts to make you feel something different than you're used to and it succeeds in flying colors.

The Fountain and The Prestige, both came out the same year, both were under marketed by the studio, both starred Hugh Jackman, and both are ‘lost’ masterpieces in their directors work. Seems like something a bunch of odd circumstances. In an alternate universe, they both became huge hits, Jackman became the next Paul Newman, the direction of cinema was changed forever, and superhero cgi fests never took over…

Guys, the fountain is the BEST movie I've ever seen, and i watch alot of movies. Critics are idiots so don't be bothered by them. I honestly think this movie even surpassed 2001 a space Odyssey. It's made with so much love and attention to detail. A true modern masterpiece.

I thought that the tree was planted by modern Thom in his dead wife's memory (she told him that story about how "death is the road to awe") they were doing lab tests with that rhesus monkey and found that brain activity jumped way up and it healed its wounds. I think future Tom IS modern Tom, now immortal. He has the vivid memories of past Tom (a character from the book that his wife began and he finished) and modern Tom (him in the past) a side effect of the drug which gives him immortality but tortures him by reminding him of his dead wife. when Xibalba goes nova and the tree heals, I didn't see that as being literal but symbolic of them achieving true everlasting life through death and completing the cycle it's the best movie that I never understood --________________--

I personally think this movie is one of the worst I have ever seen. My friends and I bought the DVDs years ago as jokes to give away for birthday and christmas presents and those people disliked it as much as I did. I don't know anyone that actually thought this was a good movie.

I can't believe it's been 14 years since this came out. To be honest I'm as confused about it now as I was then, and I'm still ok with that. I think we can all understand obsession and lost and that's part of the film that has stuck with me. I'm sure everyone watches this gets something different out of it and that's what's interesting about an Aronofsky joint. "Mother" anyone? Please discuss, lol

Good topic, badly executed. I felt the movie was like someone with seizures driving a car: full throttle and then stop, and so on. Loved the theme, but was a boring movie. Non linear plot is cool, but explain things that are needed to follow the line. Take your time to explain and the audience to enjoy, don't rush and suddenly stop. Have watched it twice, want to enjoy it, but I can't. I feel I want it to be even more emotive and have time for it.

I am rather fond of this movie, though I'd have a hard time describing exactly why. I'm going to have to disagree with the director on his assessment of sci-fi, though. Funny thing is, I would not classify this movie as a sci-fi, but rather as a fantasy.

Nah... I saw it. Wasn't impressed. Found it overlong, diffuse ahs pretentious. Sometimes a movie doesn't land with an audience because... it's not made for the audience, but for the creator's self indulgence. Which is fine... but don't pretend that obscure and inscrutable automatically equals "classic"...
