Maybe I’m in the minority on this one, but for me I’d say it was just aight. You touched on it in your mixed aspect. It was definitely competently made and had fun moments, but I just kinda feel like it was only trying to constantly recycle previous beats from the other movies. It’s like a blender of the franchise. I get that we live in an era where that’s what fans want to see (I suppose?). Every franchise out there is constantly trying to do this, some better than others. At this point I’m just kind of tired of it all. When I think of this movie and compare it to say, Alien 3 or resurrection… I’m not a gigantic fan of those and they definitely had major issues, but at least they were totally original and not desperately trying to copy the vibe of the first two (the 90s were definitely a different era, not the nostalgia porn world we live in). When I walked out of this movie, I just shrugged and felt like I’d rather just watch the first two movies and call it a day. I don’t even think the ending was that big of a swing… it was like Alvarez took the ending of resurrection and sprinkled in some Prometheus. I don’t see that as a huge risk. But yeah, it was entertaining enough. I’d give it 2.5 out of 4. Love your reviews, keep up the good work! “Get away from her… you… bitch….” (groaaaaaan)

Eh, I really wanted to love this movie, but it felt like they shoved every Alien movie into an AI and had it shit out a script, then hired a real director to cover it up. Fan film levels of unnecessary callbacks. It also felt like DLC for Alien Isolation, and I mean that as both a complement and a criticism. Isolation's attention to detail in replicating the original film's aesthetic is there, but there's also elements that feel like video gamey. I wouldn't be surprised if the temperature sequence found its way into Isolation 2. We're definitely in the Disney era of Alien now complete with deep fake resurrections of dead actors and pointless callbacks to remind us of the better films we're not watching complete with a homogenized visual style that combines the tones of those better movies. It's not the worst Alien movie. That honor still goes to Resurrection, but it might be the creatively blandest.
@riffsnoleads2 ай бұрын
I mostly agree on this but not with Resurrection. At the very least, Resurrection decided to go off the rails and do what it wanted. Romulus was nothing but memberberries and a decent first 30 minute setup.

Yeah, my only big complaints were some of the dialogue (this plays into the fan service) and the CGI for one thing in particular. I absolutely love the tie back to Covenant and Prometheus and the final act definitely plays more with that idea.

Just watched. Like it a LOT. Love the first half, not so much the second one. Still good, but for better or for worst it feels more like the greatest hits of the franchise than the movie I was watching in the first half.

I agree, the third act wasn't for me as it reminded me of the end of alien Resurrection and of course Prometheus.... But damn the first 80% of the movie was great and The nostalgia was 100% 💯🍿👽
@Brian-ph7jg4 ай бұрын
Maybe it's because I haven't seen Resurrection or Covenant but I loved the third act. I felt like the Xenomorph was disappointing and easily disposed of and was about to leave the theater disappointed. So the ending actually brought the horror I was looking for more completely and made me understand how the Xenomorphs were handled previously. The third act subverted my expectations a bit which I like, I was expecting it to try and copy the first Alien.

I completely agree with your review. I saw this in IMAX and one of my only issues with this film was the base and treble and everything was so overwhelming and a lot of the characters had very thick accents and I wasn't able to make out a lot of dialogue in the first 35 minutes or so. This is why I love subtitles. I do prefer subtitles a lot and I wish the theater experience would at least give me some sort of AI or augmented reality styled glasses to be able to wear during the movie so I could get subtitles while I'm watching something in theaters because I feel like that would definitely enhance my experience. Especially if I can hear and read all of the dialogue as it's happening. I would be able to understand the story, wish I don't normally get until my second or third watch anyway. But anyway, I noticed you posted this review yesterday and I was avoiding it because you normally post videos on Fridays, which I just came back from the theaters. But I always go to see what you say about a movie. And I'm glad you enjoyed it because I really enjoyed a lot of this movie. I was so happy. This movie actually explained the lore of the movies that we normally don't like. Like it explains the alien from Alien 3 and the abomination from Resurrection. And the abomination concept works perfect with Fede. And I loved the Prometheus references because I actually really do enjoy Prometheus over covenant, but it just had the perfect blend of everything. My main issue with the movie was I didn't understand what they were saying in the beginning because their accents are so thick and I didn't have subtitles to hear or read what they were saying. I just did a review on this because I like to do a quick 2 to 5 minute review on a movie after I walk out of the theater similar to what you do, but those are my main review points overall. Thank you so much for posting this and I'm so glad you liked it as much as I did.

Loved it. I wore my Jason shirt to the theatre, so seeing your shirt in the thumbnail made me laugh. I'm really glad they made a straight-up horror Alien again. I think the xenomorph is one of the coolest things mankind has ever conceived.

I totally agree with this. Their wouldn’t have been much to the ending if it had ended as all the others. That compound played a role in the movie early on, so the payoff/result makes sense!

This has jumped to the best of the year that I have seen and I think it has placed Fede Alvarez as number 1 for horror directors, personally. He hasn’t had one bad film. Most importantly, he somehow manages to take these franchises and pump out meaningful, familiar, and fan driven experiences. I love how this has the look and feel of Alien Isolation. The horror and slow burn of the original. A second half that gives a slice of Aliens and details that connect it to the original film and Prometheus storyline. Not to mention a major WTF ending. All wrapped into one violent, tense, and fun movie. Also a huge shoutout to the sound design and cinematography. Absolutely beautiful and is well serviced by its practical effects. Easily, a 9/10

@JoeGrizz1y4 ай бұрын
@@88lilies in terms of modern horror directors he is truly the best. On the fact that he knows how to deliver fan experiences. He isn’t trying to reinvent any genre or break any rules like others. He just knows how to give what people ask for, expect, or beg for. His films also rarely take any political or social perspective. Only if it fits the narrative and works with what is already established. He just wants crowd pleasers. Not trying to be an Ari Astor, Jordan Peele, or any of the others. He does his own thing and has been super successful as he hasn’t had any failures. Not to mention he is also one of the few directors that tries to go as fully practical in effects and sets as possible. He also doesn’t push away from body horror or showing very graphic material. Especially in his Evil Dead (2013) film. Which is something I absolutely love as his films are really the only ones that could get me going “wtf” or “that’s gross” to most of his movies.
