You sir need to get more views and publicity. Your videos are great and the reasons are: 1.The way you speak/read 2.The words you choose 3.The way you explain things 4.The footage you use & much more please make more videos like these , for me you are one of the best reviewers. I would love to see Deus Ex compared and explained like this video here

Ahh AvP2, how I missed it. The retrospective doesn't mention it but it's multiplayer was great too, especially on large open maps when marines, aliens and predators duke it out in a battle royale.

You mean on large open maps, where the smartgun was so overpowered every battle went in the marine's favor? Sometimes the predators too but never the aliens, and especially not if alien lifecycle was enabled.

I'd like to add that in AVP 2010 there is a shit load of stuff that is simply never seen in several campaigns. If you hand around long enough or run ahead in some spaces, particularly in the Marine and Alien campaigns, you can hear a lot of dialogue that you wouldn't hear normally. There's hidden Predator traps in the Alien campaign and in the first level of the marine campaign if you rush ahead you can actually see an alien stalking you.

21:00 re: the scriptwriters - the original script was actually quite different to what ended up being filmed. David Fincher was brought on as a replacement director and, to be fair, I think he did a good job with what he was given. Originally, the prison colony was supposed to be a space monastery made entirely of wood. I don't think the producers thought too deeply about the metaphor you're alluding to when they decided on the change; rather, they were probably just trying to ground the concept and bring it a little closer to reality than a giant wooden death-star filled with abstinent space-monks, and an isolated prison colony seems only a few logical steps away.

True dat! AVP2 also taps into a lot of the expanded universe material in the various comics and graphic novels and feels right at home. One of my favourite games, especially as an aliens game. Nice to see it getting some love here as it was very much overlooked and generally under-appreciated.

I still like AVP over AVP2. The Alien movement is much better and you can spend a lot more time on walls and ceilings, while AVP2 forces you down to the floor very often, and there are too many areas without a ceiling. AVP2 sacrificed the dynamism of lighting for image quality, and I think that was a mistake. I'd love to see a remake of classic AVP. Also, Isolation is a masterpiece and a love letter.

Here's my thoughts quickly since this was a long video. 1. AvP Classic is one of my favorites. I played it so much, like every day, until the disc physically broke in the CD Driver. 2. AvP 2 was a worthy follow-up that improved upon AvP storywise, but I still prefer AvP classic. 3. Primal Hunt's, and likewise AvP2's best story was that of the Alien. As was AvP Classic. 4. While initially cool to have the LifeCycle, in the long run I didn't care much for it. It wasn't *fun* to be a worthless chestburster. 5. AvP3 ( _2010_ ) is essentially a remake of AvP1 but with a more sensical plot and I love AvP3's storyline. Another games I played a relative amount. Though we did have to complain on the forums because Predator's overpoweredness with the disc was just insane. Predator had never been more powerful than in that game and it went so far that it eventually just evolved into grudge matches online with Predators against Predators and whomever threw the first disc won like if they were from Tron. I personally think that the strongest story in all AvP games have always belonged to the Alien because it's always in the same lines: *Serve the Queen, further the Hive*. The Marine does as the Marine does in these games. The Alien hunts and furthers the hive's progress, saving it or creating a new. The Predator gains honor. But while the Marine ending is bleak, the Alien ending is terrifying, the Predator's ending is just fucking awesome. They really completely managed to capture the essence of the Predator and the Alien, Rebellion did. 6. Aliens Colonial Marines was crap, and I first saw the warning signs when we got to see the kamikaze aliens but no one would listen to me. Ironically, when the game was released and now affirmative shit, I cut the kamikaze aliens some slack because I felt they fit really well into the alien lore. And that whole segment was terrifying and fun, that combined with the " _King Alien_ " and the final figth against Alien Queen was the three legitimately good parts of the game. The rest was shit. 7. I never played Statis Interrupted but I did watch a playthrough of it, and just then, as now in your video ending, the death of Lisbeth still makes me physically ill to watch ( _Alien 3 on Amiga traumatized me so badly as a kid that I still have nightmares and pseudo-nightmares, 23-25 years later or so, as during that time, I had never seen anything quite like that_ ). 8. I love Alien 3 as I thought it was a great underrated movie, with a fantastic finale to Ripley's story. Not to mention the amazing orchestral score. Alien 3 just have a great feeling to it - Despair, bleak, hopelessness, *utter doom*. I think the biggest reason why so many don't like it is because they can't handle all that negative sensation. Final: Makes me wonder if you've ever played the PS2 / Xbox game, Predator Concrete Jungle. Another great Predator game that captures the essence of the Yautja.

I'd give AVP 2010 some more credit, but it was definately not used to it's fullest potential. I think my main problem was that, aside from reusing maps over and over again, it was way too short. And it had barely any story going on. AVP classic had little to no story, but it balanced it out by having more variety in levels and it wasn't too damn short. The game could hold it's own without a story. It was a game first and story third. AVP 2 did put emphasis on story as well as the variety of the levels and the length. AVP 2010 had little emphasis on all those points. It's still a fun game though and it still uses the Xeno's way, WAY better than Colonial Marines does. The DLC Stasis Interrupted it pretty much the only good thing about the game, because it at least TRIED. The main game is almost worthless. It relies way too much on nostalgia to sell itself. Apparently it worked. Alien Isolation is like the polar opposite of Colonial Marines. If I would give Alien games a score then: Alien Isolation 10/10 AVP2 9/10 AVP classic 8/10 AVP 2010 7/10 Stasis Interrupted 5/10 Colonial Marines 4/10

+nexusshark I agree.. I actually played through that game more times then I should of.. I found it was the best game in that universe for me... I mean damn. We got 3 campaigns (Even if there mostly the same levels) as the 3 iconic creatures we know and love from the AVP universe, so I enjoined it.. But kept wishing it could of had an actual Poignant story and better more default helmet wielding marine. I liked the crazy gruesome deaths tho..! Overall a Ok game, but the property deserves so much more.

Colonial Marines didn't just have "graphical quality" reduced. The original trailer was a short either scripted or prerendered movie and then the developers tried to make a game based on that scene. You know: Your typical AAA publisher scam. I believe they call it "vertical slice"

Spooky799kil AvP 2 game is the best, for sure. Especially for the marine campaign. I preferred hunting humans in the 2010 AvP as the predator, but being an alien is awful in that game. The marine campaign in AvP 2010 was ok, but pretty generic and far too short, with most of the last half being against those bots, which was just terrible. AvP 2 was almost faultless in every way.

Sure, it wasn't as reliable and ambitious for its time as AVP 2001, but I loved the presentation, the sound FX, and especially the upgraded animations of the Alien campaign. AvP10 was soooo sooooo beautiful. I mean visually IT STILL HOLDS UP and looks amazing even beside modern games. It's HOW it looks, not even the tech itself - tech allowed artists to create that beauty. And back in the day those visuals were out of this world, stuff from the future that never came. And them Aliens never ever looked this good even in the Alien Isolation game (that one fittingly looked more like rubbery big serpent from Alien than them wall crawling bugs from Aliens).

I actually like Alien 3. Thematically at least. Its take on the theme of incorruptability is actually pretty clever, with its religious overtones and Elliot Goldenthal's masterpiece of a score. In terms of action, tension and drama it's not quite so good, admittedly. Also, dance music and disco-lighting make any scene better. See the fist fight with the velocirapter in Telltale's Jurrasic Park, and Karma's capture in Black Ops 2. Finally, Colonial Marines did get one thing right. The way the blue hue of the screen mirrored the helmet cams in Aliens was pretty smart.

RE: Alien 3 the workprint cut is also much, much better than the theatrical cut. It's genuinely good, albeit not on par with Alien or Aliens. I do like how it dials things back from Aliens though. In fact, thinking about it, Alien 3 is to Alien what Alien Resurrection is to Aliens. Both are flawed re-interpretations of the style of a former film in the series.

It's sad that so many previously talented and dedicated Devs, Gearbox, Bethesda, even Valve among many others, have fallen so far in the past decade or two. Who back in the early 2000s would have thought that one of the most celebrated and loved game studios of the 20-teens wouldn't be any of the ones listed- but would actually be a little studio from Poland, among a few other unlikely upstarts such as Telltale? What is it about success that corrodes? EDIT: Also, I actually did enjoy Alien: Resurrection. I last watched it a few years ago, enough time to view it without the forgiving veneer of childhood and to see it for what it was. I like Sigourney Weaver's performance, as well as Ron Perlman's, and I even thing there's something about Winona Ryder's goofy acting that's endearing. I think Resurrection came out at just enough time past the original trilogy and took just enough of its own direction to really boil the blood of "purists" but looking back I did have fun with that movie. There was some admittedly cool action sequences but even beyond that I have to give it credit for attempting to create a new setting for the franchise - complete with its own style of weapons, technology, and behaviors. Something more sci-fi than even the original setting of the franchise, they obviously spent a lot of time trying to "world build" and I think it would have paid off, if only the script had gotten as much attention.

It's a magazine, not a clip that feeds the pulse rifle (as well as the handgun). Hollywood always gets that screwed up, but they are two different things when speaking in terms of firearm ammunition feeding devices. An example of a clip would be the WWII M1 Garand or the stripper clip that loads an SKS's fixed magazine. A clip is usually just a stamped piece of metal that is used and tossed aside. A magazine is more complicated, holding the ammo but also containing a spring and follower that actually feeds the ammo. A clip just holds it and cannot actually feed the ammo on its own.. You know how the Mauser rifles are fed in the WWI-WWII type games? That's a clip....holds five rounds and allows quick feeding into the rifle's internal magazine. Inside the rifle's magazine (which is fixed in the case of a Mauser rifle) is a spring loaded follower that maintains upward pressure on the rounds to present them for feeding as you cycle the firearm. You do an awesome job with these, sorry to nitpick but as intelligent as you are I figured you would want to know.

+poopydoodie11 Aliens is loved by a lot of people but to me it lacks any of the emotion or thematic imagery of the original film or even Alien 3. It's an 80's action film and it really doesn't go beyond that. Yes there's some themes of Motherhood but they are pretty surface level and there's nothing interesting or impressive about its visual design. I personally think the decision to introduce a Queen Alien was a huge mistake. It takes the mysterious biological weapon approach from the first film and disregards it for Space Bugs essentially. It's a fun film, I enjoy Aliens but I prefer Alien 3 for its darker artistic approach.

My beef with Aliens is that they made the Xenomorphs "Killable". For me what made Alien so scary was that you didn't know if you could actually kill it. I also like Alien 3 for expanding on the biology of the Xenomorphs by showing us that it could use other lifeforms as hosts and that whatever it chose would reflect the abilities it may have.

AVP2's MP is legendary to me. I still recall with absolute clarity 3 things. I was playing with a friend of mine, a 1 vs 1 match, I as marine, he as predator. Of the many back-and-forth battles we had his best moment was when he freaked me out by nailing my head to the wall from across one of the more open maps with the combi-stick, or whatever it's called. It was so sudden and out of the blue, I freaked out completely. Later on a different map, my best come-back was teaching him why he should not fuck around with nets. I tailored my loadouts for anti-Predator work ofc, and when he netted me and cam over to collect my head, I got him back by shooting him in the mask and then his face with my pistol. He wasn't expecting that. The last moment was a massive LAN party in a school-hall in Norway, we had traveled a long way to take part in this event and one of the games we played was AVP2 MP with filled-out roosters. I was an alien, and on the full-cycle type of play tried to get my poor facehugger up a flight of stairs. I bounced to hard and flew up the stairs from the mid-way point, PERFECTLY connecting with the face of a marine player who was running down the hall. The sudden change made the both of us yell out in surprise, where we found out we were playing from right behind each other. Everyone around us got a good laugh out of that. AVP2 was awesome for it's time, and it's such a shame it's so hard to get a hold of today, I would love to play it again, even though I've beaten it enough times to know the whole thing by default.

They do actually explain the lower ammo count in the Pulse Rifle in Colonial Marines. They mention that it is the Mk 2 which has a lower ammo count but has a higher damage output. It is said right in the weapons customization menu.

Aliens: Colonial Marines and Stasis Interrupted were fantastic. 20th Century FOX and Ridley Scott should make Stasis Interrupted a TV mini series. Lisbeth, Samwell and Rick Levy are really great characters.

This was a great video. I agreed with all points and found it to be very insightful. The only criticism I can come up with was its length, but that is unavoidable given the amount of material you had to cover. Liked, and subscribed! Good work.

Great video. The original AVP still is my favorite and the scariest. The marine weapon sounds were spot on. For some reason they changed that in AVP 2. They got the predator sounds spot on in AVP2 though and had a fantastic multiplayer. Alien Isolation has left us hope for more great games to come.

Also Colonial Marines might've been shite. But the soundtrack was amazing. It slots directly into the 1986 original Aliens score. Kevin Riepl was born to write Aliens, his previous works echoing major themes and styles from it. Waste of good music really. I did like the HUD too, going for a a more 8-bit green text era of computing look to it than the modernistic HUD's of the other games. The separate motion tracker was also a nice touch, where having one at all times like the Halo or Call of Duty radars was perhaps a bit untrue to the source material.

MrMatu2t oh, and the alien gameplay needs to be much much better. I can see them making a new game. Even more so if another movie comes out by chance, but that'd mean the game would probably be shit. Idk. We're in different times, really now anything can happen

I have fond memories playing AVP99 back on Gamespy with my 56k modem lol. Even though the sequel was more fleshed out, the original AVP had so many levels that were almost room for room replicas of the environments from movies, Nostromo, Sulaco etc.

AVP is and always has been my favorite franchise, this video was so fun to watch reminding me of the countless hours I spent playing AVP and AVP2 as a kid. I don't know if it's deliberate or just the way you read/talk, but you sound almost EXACTLY like Richard Dreyfuss narrating in Stand By Me and it makes your videos absolutely awesome, especially with the descriptive language you use and the way you phrase things, very much in the same style he often spoke with in that film. I do have one minor point of contention though with regards to your analysis. You mentioned the fact that the marines can't sponge bullets well, but you must remember that even though they do have that plated armor, that same armor was very vulnerable to acid, wasn't very thick, and their guns/bullets were portrayed as being far more powerful than typical modern weapons/bullets (this is why they sounded differently for the most part, were able to shred the hard-shelled aliens and very likely would have blown literal chunks out of other marines had they fired on one another at any point in the film; this can be illustrated throughout the films whenever an alien gets shot and chunks are literally blown off with acid spraying everywhere). I think if a space marine's assault rifle were compared to a standard modern machine gun, it would be like comparing a 45 to a min grenade launcher; yes, both are reasonably powerful, but the latter does WAY more damage on impact. I mean their main guns were so huge that they literally had a mechanical/hydraulic arm on their waist to help them support/carry and aim the thing. That wasn't just because of the high capacity clips; the entire thing was like one massive barrel with an absurd rate of fire and a very unique firing sound with a literal jet of flame shooting out the barrel as they fired and they were blowing off limbs, heads and chunks out of the aliens they hit while they could still themselves be pierced by an alien's organic claws/talons, teeth and tails, including through their full armor and helmets, so there is no way their body armor could withstand even a single round from their own weapons. Anyway, sorry to be all nitpicky, and all in all I loved your analysis of these games and it really makes me want to grab the 2010 title if for no other reason than to play that marvelous looking Predator campaign.

Lost Planet 3 is probably the best (recent) Aliens game I've played to be honest. Everything from the atmosphere to the music is a direct copy of Aliens. I haven't played Isolation yet. Looking forward to trying that out but I'll always have a soft spot for the Alien trilogy on PS1

I loved AVP2, it was my favorite in the series, and I've played it for years, mostly multi-player. I did enjoy the campaign and I still think it's pretty good even now. But to me AVP2 really shined in multi-player. I remember always picking a Predator class. The way you had to quickly change between visions to see the enemies was pretty intense, and the plasma cannon wa probably the most satisfying weapon in the whole game.

AVP2 Gold Edition was one of the first FPS games I ever played, second only to Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Thanks to AVP2's compatibility with even the most modern of hardware, I still find myself playing it on Windows 7 and even Windows 10 machines, and thanks to the Steam Controller, I can finally play the game with a gamepad and not be forced to sit so close to the screen!

Excellent documentary. Very well thought out in every aspect. Made one mistake right in the beginning though. My favorite movie in the series, ALIENS, was released in 1986, not 87. Back in the day when the special uncut edition was put out on VHS by way of conventions, I spent a few years, on and off, redoing my supposed final draft script for the film (which I got SPX master Bob Skotak, who did the effects in the movie with this brother, to sign through an interesting situation) to be just that - a word-for-word, scene-for-scene script of the uncut version of the flick. It's available on several AvP websites. Shows you how much I loved and love the film. :) Alien and Aliens, especially the later, have had a major influence on sci-fi films after it's release, especially in the sounds department. It's amazing how many times I hear sounds from Aliens in movies and Japanimation, more so anime. It's a real shame how "Aliens: Colonial Marines" tried to screw up the timeline of the series by coming up with even more B.S. on how the facehugger got onboard the Sulaco to impregnate Ripley. It was massively stupid in Alien3, and made no since considering the Queen didn't bring any with her onto the ship for the final fight in Aliens and the marines wouldn't have had a hidden xenomorph storage area in the ship. Ugh, makes my head hurt at the sheer stupid of what writers can do to destroy the series story wise, and A:CM didn't help. Too bad Michael Biehn had to be involved in it.
