@@baaabross I choose the x15 and I love it! But I must say my room can get hot in the summer and while I play for maybe an hour or so while using it’s maxed out settings the laptop can get a little hot(nothing to crazy)but I might buy a cooling pad fan…???

Like many, this was a tough choice, and I went back and forth so many times but got the M17 for two major reasons. 1) I REALLY liked the interior white color scheme inside the laptop and despise the new black interior on the X17, very boring seeing as 99% of laptops have a black interior and it doesn't really stand out the way the M17 did. Reason 2) The number pad is a huge deal to me. I use it a ton, and although I do use another keyboard primary (that has a number pad), I did buy a gaming laptop to be mobile (which includes having a number pad), and I do not want to have to stress out about needing another external keyboard or using the numbers on the top of the keyboard (eyyyy). If the X17 had these small features, that would have tipped me to get the X17 since the temperature controls do appear to be better on the new X17. Thanks Mash, I really appreciated your countless of videos I saw when making my purchase. Out of curiosity, how is the noise level on the newer X17? Any better at all or still pretty loud (yes, I know it's to be expected of a gaming laptop). I have used the 'Quiet' feature on the M17 and it is great.

The noise level is better on load as the 4 fans don't need to spin up as high plus the temps are really solid. Still with a bit of tweaking I can get the m17r4 pretty quiet whilst still performing well too

The m17r4 is a revised generation from m17r1 and the x series is thr first of its kind and it did remarkable. They have to tone colours which is good for keyboard as less stain. Good temps, good performance. All i have say it did great as the first of the line. Thanks mash it i have been watching all your laptop reviews to make up my mind and i choose the x17. Nice! What configuration did you pick? I had been considering the x15 but x17 looks better both thermally and performance wise. I'll just have to buy a tablet or a tiny cheap laptop for those situations where I need mobility and not power

Oh no way. What model 34” did you get? I am very sensitive to screens (pwm gives me terrible migraines etc) but I had no issues with the aw3420dw.

@@MashITTech Yeh pretty dud about that. AW3420DW as well sir! Reckon my relatively high astigmatism coupled with high screen brightness was the cause of it. Am on a trial run now with 50% brightness during the day (my room has plenty of natural sunlight) and with ceiling lights turned on at night and I've been coping better. Can't see myself ever going back to 16:9 !!

IMHO lowest temps with best/performance very important for longevity, so to avoid thermal throttling I chose X17 with I7- 11800 and rtx 3070. Im hoping this leaves thermal headroom to overclock rtx 3070 GPU after undervoltong CPU. I had first selected M15r4 maxed out, but even under max fan the M15r4 would appear to have slightly less performance and much more heat after throttling. Of course I'm justifying being unable to afford maxxed out X17. Thanks for great reviews, and not making us watch you play games.

If you concerned about the temperature you must try the lenovo legion 5 with Ryzen processor. I have one and it's so cool. Never exceed 80 celsius no matter what.

Just got my m17 a week ago. 3070 with 144FHD screen and 32ram. Interesting that it has an option Fn+F7 to switch dedicated graphics but AW never really mentioned it in any description, manual or website. Anyway, mux switch does not help too much for battery life... Firmware is just annoying and not easy to use. Overall is a good gaming machine, I'm quite happy with it.

I already have a m17r4 and this excellent video comforts me into getting another m17r4 for my wife instead of a x17. M17R4 keyboard + connector layout = win. Having hot air blowing on my mouse hand while gaming or heavy load work is just a no go and disqualifies the x17.

my biggest regret is the 360hz panels were not available in the UK when I ordered so I have the 165hz :( The 360hz panel in my area 51m r2 is just amazing. I am currently using the 3080, 32gb i7 and 165hz machine and am loving it. My biggest gripe is they didn't redesign the 330w PSU and I would have liked a USB port on the side (so not really much to moan about in the grand scheme of things)

@kevin young not true, check the benchmarks difference in r4 and x 17 or even r4 and r6. 10% framerate difference in worst case and much higher in the best case

Thank you for the fair and honest review. I have the x17 and enjoy it very much. I found it surprising how much better the sound is on the M17. The mid tones are amazingly beautiful, I can't help be surprised by this and leads me to my question, was the equalizer a possible factor? maybe same speakers tuned differently? idk. Love your work!

@@soldierboy2227 I absolutely love it. I only game when I'm home so I play it on my external monitor b/c I have the 4k version. In the bios I did the generic oc with xmp enabled. I've slightly overclocked by 100mhz. Timespy is 12900 to 13000 total. Cinebench 23 single core is about 1680. So for games I crank it up and honestly it runs great even after 8 hours of gaming with no FPS drop. Happy gaming!

Very happy with my M17 R4 360hz RTX 3070 16gb ram best buy model. Sure the X17 has upgradable ram slots, a slightly better performance, but the downgrade in audio quality, 10key taken out, smaller pad and no side ports makes the M17 the better (and cheaper) buy. X17 is still a GREAT laptop, don't get me wrong, but I have absolutely no buyers remorse especially after seeing this comparison. Throttlestop FTW!

@@MashITTech Totally agree with you and very sound reason. If the X17 was cheaper by a few hundred than the M17, I would probably consider it despite its cons. The good news is that Dell has 2 winners on their hands that are more or less massively available in a video card shortage world. Win for gamers. Thanks again for all the videos you have done (I think I have watched most of them now) and the M17R4 tune up videos has greatly helped me push out every last drop of performance from my machine while keeping it relatively cool. You are doing wonderful work!

@@johnme2283 you will be very satisfied I think. After adjustments I can run cyberpunk 2077 on ultra rtx graphics with DLSS on quality for 50 to 60 fps on ultrawide 3440 x 1440. I think this machine will ve great for gaming for the next 3 years on top settings.

Some games use the num-pads for extra actions such as emotes and can really come in handy for other key bindings as well. I'd definitely have to go with the M17 R4.

Choosing either of these two is an excellent choice. If you are planning to buy a laptop for hardcore gaming and also other tasks Alienware is the brand to go after. There is a reason why Alienware laptops in general cost $2,000.00+. You can always buy an Asus, Razer, or even MSI which cost much less but don't you the performance of Alienware.

I was initially thinking I wanted a smaller gaming laptop for the 1st time and was going to go with the X15 or even an M15. But now I'm trying to decide between the 2 17 inch models in this vid. I was leaning toward the M17 but watching your 2 games at the end concern me. The M17 was limiting the GPU wattage quite a bit and the last game was coming in at 40 fps less or so. Is GPU throttling an issue with the M17? How about Temps? Also, what is the very last game you were playing? The one at the end of the vid. Really good vid, I appreciate the comparison.

I was initially disappointed when I saw the x17 release basically when I had just purchased my m17 r4. But now I’m glad I bought the m17. Still going strong. I have mined NiceHash since owning it and used as my daily and for gaming. Handles everything I throw at it on max settings no issues. They do run hot, but that’s really the only thing I can say negative about it. Oh and the battery life, but mine is always plugged in so I have never noticed how long it lasts on a charge

After your review of the M17 I decided to go with the M17 R4 (370/16/1TB/360Hz/mechanical Keyboard) a few weeks back. Now I can confirm that I like the port setup better (vs X17) and the lack of number pad on X17 would have been a no go for me. Also, I was able to get about a $200 discount, not great, but better than full price. COVID has impacted stock availability of certain manufacturers. Thanks again.

I can't see them having the X17r2 without a numpad, I see that option returning. For those who need something for productivity it is a bit deal break when you're already bringing something that big around. I suppose many use a keyboard, mouse, and monitor when at home anyway but I usually end up using my laptop for number crunching and such when on the move. Locked into soldered RAM is a bit of a letdown on the m17r4 though. 8GB configurations not exactly future proof and if you've seen the premium on the 32GB versions you'll settle on the 16GB only to be thinking in 3/4 years "man who'd thought we'd ever need 32GB of ram!"

@@FuN5iz3 Yeah decided to go totally rouge... trying out the ASUS G15 Advantage Edition. Price was right at best buy openbox! Some assembly issues noted online but when its right, its a great system. I have since bought a USB numpad for my number crunchy duties and the 15 inch is much more portable option all in all... and the battery life on this thing is nuts, run presentations all day off it on the silent and power saving settings. At home I have a 25 or 27 inch monitor (depending on where I'm working from) so good to there. Ironically I bought a Corsair K65 Mini with the Cherry MX to treat myself. I love the keys, most repsonsive keyboard I've ever had... but definitely might switch out for a full keyboard at home and my dumbass didn't realize for couch duty that its... not wireless... otherwise its nice having the mouse and everything controllable from the mini.

Apparently the x17 has a well known speaker quality / sound issue problem which stems from the way the speakers are installed and secured. Hopefully Dell works this out but there's a fix out there if anyone wants to work on their x17s themselves.

If you don’t mind having a mini airport take m17, I had to send it back, the fan whine was soo annoying. I would choose x17, but not sure if 3080 is that much superior over 3070, on the other hand 16 GB of VRAM and 165 W might be worth the extra penny, not an easy choice 😅, guess we have to wait for Dave’s review on it 😉. Best Alienware review channel on YT hands down, great video mate 🍻✌️.

The X17 is a R4 replacement so this will probably be around for the next few years I expect. The M17r2-r4 was about 3 years using this chassis, the m17r1 chassis was different which is why I am not including it

Kinda glad I went for the M17 R4 (battery life is of very little concern to me and even over the last week with crazy external temperatures I have not worried about the internal temps), but I am sure I would not be disappointed with the X17. I know it is subjective but I am not sold on the 2 tone colour scheme or the keyboard but I wish I had the option to change the RAM if I wanted to.The extra CPU performance is pretty impressive and a bit unexpected.

As soon as you get it, boot into windows and run windows update and then dell update, this will get the laptop up to date (will take a while) once you have done that go into command centre and set up your lighting then just enjoy it 👍

m17 r4 i9 10980 w/rtx3080 is a beast peeps, IF you can still get one fully spect, do. It will not beat the 11 gen in timespy or cinebench but in games the rtx3080 is the same. I play all the AAA titles worth playing at the same frame rates as the x17. The keyboard is better, the sound is better, in games its the same, the m17's cooling is on pare with the x17, the price is considerably less. The x17 r2/3/4 will be a better unit. A great revieuw as always.. i will stay with my m17r4 32 gigs 3080 rtx 4k screen.. 25 % cpu performance is not worth 1500 euros more and i do not see how anybody could buy a 17 inch without a number pad.. I could have bought the razer 17 pro wich also does not have a number pad.. i think its a big mistake and design error.. i hope alienware will bring a m17r5 with a 3080 and a 4 k screen.. if not i am happy with my m17r4..

I really love them both. If pure gaming then the X17 is a good choice, but the legion 7 is actually cheaper and has a better screen so for a lot of people it is the better choice

My x17 got delayed to Aug 4th. :( I feel the i7 is still the better choice in both the x17 and m17 r4 in everyday use for temps and price to performance ratio. I returned my m17 r4 due to bad temp throttling with the i9 and should've stuck to the i7.

on the last section of the video, I noticed a great deference in fps compared to both machines...but looking deeper I noticed the gpu power draw on the x17, while in gameplay was almost double of the m17 r4, this could be a bit misleading as the fps difference would not be as great.

This is the same high endurance finish as my area 51m r2 and the m17 r4 yes. It is not like the older rubber finish that marked easily. My area 51m r2 still looks pristine but I also baby my laptops :)

definitely the 3070 then upgrade the ram later down the line. the slow ram only looses a few % performance but the 3060 is a much slower card than 3070

Did they unlock the bios mux on your X17? My m15 R5 has the same 165hz display and I can disable Optimus in the bios to connect directly to the GPU. It was an unexpected upgrade and improves performance like a external display.

I bought a r3 for 1800 bucks same thing as the r4 but with the gtx2070. You can play any AAA game on high settings so if you're on a budget like me get the m17 r3!

I have an M17r2, and one of my biggest complaints about the laptop is how hot it gets, and the ram being soldered on. My X17 has been delayed so still haven't gotten it yet. personally, I would rather have a Gen 4 SSD, better performance, better temps, than a slower laptop that's hotter, limited upgradeability, and gen3. also, I'm a huge fan of the numberpad, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for better cooling.

Hi Mash IT i have my x17 with xmp ram you have to go to the Bios then in to advenced overclooking and change it to XMP SPEED from 3200 MHZ hope this helps .

I do not think they are making m17r5, sorry. Yes the laptop can auto start on lid opening but this can also be turned off in BIOS

I have an m17 r3 and I will say that the main problem is the battery life. I love using this laptop all the time but when actually doing any work on google docs and stuff like that you're at most getting an hour and a half out of it so you find yourself always plugged in. 5 hours of battery life is really a huge thing for a laptop like this compared to barely over an hour.

Went with the X17, it's in production as I type this. New Intel, Windows Hello, Smaller Brick, 360 Refresh with Advanced Optimus, Cherry Keys, 32G XMP Ram(This won't be slow), I like the ports in the back for a cleaner look. My disappointments: No Num Pad, No Full Size SD(use this for my 3d printer) No QHD Option.
