Growing up in a small town in central Saskatchewan is definitely a world away from the life I live now, but it was really nice to walk down memory lane and visit the place where a lot of my big dreams really began. I'm an old Canadian guy now. I trucked all over Canada and the USA all my life. But my most enjoyable moments were when I was layed over in little towns like yours. Always relaxing and the folks were friendly, helpful, and couldn't do enough to make you feel at home and comfortable. I so miss those days. When you go back to places you leave, you always remember your your good times you had at the places and with the people who aren't there anymore. In 1962, I bought a 1953 Chevy for $35. My best friend and I left Toronto to go to the west coast. In Broadview Sask. the Chevy died. A wrecking yard traded a 1951 Pontiac for my Chev and some labour . The Pontiac took us to Vancouver and died. We hitched and hopped freight trains to get home. Did odd jobs for money in little towns. People were just awesome. I always got the travelling itch after that trip. Hence the truck driving career.

@@ybleon7131 things were different then. Didn't need insurance. Only had to pay the government $20 for unsatisfied judgement. Whatever that meant. A friend saw two 51 mercurys sitting in a farmers field. He got them both for $150. We put a battery in one and it ran and we towed the other one home with it. The good old days.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba were my two favorite provinces when I travelled across Canada. Beautiful scenery and the most pleasant people in Canada. It was like being in another world as an American.

Grew up in Elrose with about 200 other people. Say what you will but growing up like that is the best.Three things make a Saskatchewan small town: 1) grain elevators, 2) a curling rink and 3) a Chinese/Canadian restaurant.

Love your content! I grew up in Blaine Lake Sask, (where my dad was from) and spent a lot of time in the Krydor area, as my mother was from around there... It was a different way of life all those years ago, but I cherish them. I spend all of my adolescent summers in small-town, Sask. Grandparents farmed wheat and I Iearned how to work hard, from them... Moved on to Saskatoon to go to elementary and high school and eventually med school at U of Sask... My family is still there and I visit often. I love the way that Saskatchewan people have always looked out for each other...

Thanks so much for posting this great video! My grandparents were from Kinistino, as well both my aunt and my Dad were born there. My Grandfather had the barbershop on Main Street for just over 50 years, making it the town's longest surviving business under the same owner. I spent many summers as a kid in the town as well. Fond memories!

so i grew up in a small town in USA . not as small as yours. i was lured to big city after i was 18. i went to college. then i came back to my small town. i was married. raised two daughters here in my small town. now my girls are both 18. they are into their college educations and pursuing their careers and lives of their own. i want to retire to a smaller town now of around the same size as where you grew up. its very nice. also my daughters are Ukrainian from their Mom (Polish from me) our heritage. We are Americans. but we love our heritage. Especially the food (Thanks Babcia!), music(our Auntie has a Bandura! Amazing!), and our religion. You remind me of my girls going to our playgrounds. One day my two girls got into an argument at the playground. So The younger one started walking home. Then we heard her call "Dad". and a deer was running up the street directly toward her. She managed to dodge out to the way, and the deer, which had its face bloodied-probably hit by car- ran past us at the playground and straight off the end of the near by town fishing dock, we watched it swim across the harbor. One of the strangest things we ever saw, then the fight between the girls was over ! We enjoy your videos. Thank you.

Alina, Thanks for sharing this piece of your formative years. Kinistino seems very clean and friendly. I was a child (K-5th) in small towns of Jackson Ohio, and Galesburg Illinois. Smaller towns can produce persons with very charitable and courageous character - residents often come together and foster a sense of community. I still remember the "Apple Festival" and the marching bands and floats on the main drag during the parades, where I lived. Holiday lights from the streetlamps. I had some of the best elementary school teachers - remember their last names even today (Keller, Hackett, Picket). Loved recess on the playgrounds! Living on a farm property - a source your love of nature and animals? Likely fostered some gregarious self-sufficiency, as farming requires it (and because you were an only child?). Your character and love of life is amazing - goodness there in your background. You might find it interesting to study the developmental stages and agendas of people at different ages in the theories of Erik Erikson, Developmental Psychologist. After looking at my old home towns, I looked to find the property on both Google Maps, and Apple Maps - top down on Apple Maps still shows the house present, but Google Maps has updated and its gone - maybe you want to do a screen capture of it for remembrance sake. Street view (Dixon) still shows the house in Google - it was modest, but pretty. Yes, I'll admit, I was a little sad for you to see it gone - all we have is the NOW (right?), so we need to make it our best, and fill it with love, our most important memory! Thinking about it . . . would you ever want to repurchase the large lot for a retirement or periodic escape spot, and build a sweet little modern bungalow there? If I was independently wealthy, I'd buy it for you . . . but, I'm not. So, here's wishing you a million bucks, and continued prosperity! LOL!

Brings back a lot of memories. I remember I returned to my hometown in Montana. No one I grew up with was there. The old creek we swam in all the time used to have 20 or 30 kids in it during the summer. There was 3 when I visited. The town now has about 800 people, down from 3500 in my day.

I very much liked your casual dress, with your cami and jean shorts. Also I liked when you did some of the activities you did as a child, like swinging, climbing the "hill" and all the child things you reenacted. Yes, it must have been weird to see property you spent time in and have it gone, but you can remember the land features. I grew up in Kansas City, but I was there from birth until I went to college at Kansas State University......I do remember visiting my old schools and commenting, as you did, on how everything seemed so small. You seemed happy to be there....I got a little bit of a wistful feeling. It is amazing all you have done as an immigrant and especially leaving for Japan at age 11. You are just so trained to have stars in your eyes and wonder about the world. Also your considerable courage in your achievements....yes you have had your eyes on the prize.

I lived in Prince Albert and used to spend summers at my fathers as a kid growing up in the 90s at james smith cree nation just 20min down the road from kinistino. From time to time we would come here for groceries at co-op or post office to mail somthing and sometimes I could talk him into taking me to the sven cafe' or juggheads. So many good memories here. Now I live in Kelowna British Columbia with my wife and 3 kids. That being said I still like to look back at my past and this town was a small but memorable part of it. Beautiful video thanks !

Sooo Saskatchewan, so cool ! Your videos are really well done and depict small-town Sask very well. I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and my hometown had about 100 people. I've lived in Vancouver for quite a few years and have met lot's of people from small -town Sask, all of us talk about the good Ole days back in Saskatchewan, and all of us really miss it. I think you miss it too, but the good thing is that small-town Sask doesn't change very much. My hometown is Viceroy, Love all your videos and will keep watching them. Hello Alina, I am from Mexico City and some time ago spent a winter between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in Canada, flying back and for to Mexico's beaches like Los Cabos, Cozumel Acapulco, Ixtapa-Zih, Cancún and Varadero in Cuba, in a Mexican charter airline, like a flight attendant and those cities also Regina and Brandon bring me so many memories in my mind.
