I had been to srilanka in 2017 and it was really paradise on earth as they call it. Kandy is lovely but my favourite city would be definitely nuwara eliya , it's a must to go there .

I just returned from my 1st Sri Lanka trip and I was so amazed with it's culture and nature! Kandy is a great heritage city which I liked very much. If you have time try visiting Nuwara Eliya and stay there for a day or 2 to just enjoy a peaceful life with a nice weather. Nuwara Eliya is slightly expensive place compared to Kandy but it is worth visiting.

10:00 you are correct Buddha gained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree, in Anuradhapura there is a branch of the original bodhi tree that Buddha gained enlightenment known as Sri maha bodhiya, which is planted in 288 BC (over 2300 years old). It is considered as the oldest tree planted by humans.

Dear Alina, I am a Sri Lankan American living in CA . I moved to US in 1991 and accidentally saw this video. You have done a good job reporting good and bad. I went to HS in Kandy and my brother who is a General Surgeon and his family are still living in Kandy. Kandy is a beautiful ancient city but due to no space, I heard it looks congested and no way of expanding. However, there was an old prison and some administration building were move to the suburbs. Hope you had time to travel to North an d south to see the beautiful beaches and also upcountry to see water falls and more beautiful areas in SL. Cheers!

I'm from Kandy and glad to see you here. However, I think following tips would be helpful for future travelers (If you have already left 🙂) 1) Afternoon is the best time to visit Kandy or any other place is Sri Lanka (except places with cooler climates such as Nuwara Eliya.). Both the weather and the vibe would be much nicer in the afternoon. 2) In my opinion, the best thing to do in Kandy is to stroll around the Kandy Lake in the afternoon, which is really breathtaking. After the stroll, you can stop by a coffee shop and explore the rest of the central Kandy by foot, including the Temple of the Tooth. 3) I enjoy admiring the Temple of the Tooth from outside. There is lot to see in the premises as well. And then go inside, but avoid the main worshiping area (you showed here), which is usually extremely crowded by both worshipers and tourists. But do visit the 2 museums insides the temple it self. They are in the 2nd and 3rd floor. One of them is under renovation these days. 4) Don't forget to visit the Kandy view point 5) Even though they are overprized, I'd still recommend nicer cafes, if you want to send some time. Even locals go to those places if they want to have a long chat with a friend or someone.

Wow Alina I am super happy that you found Dinesh to show you around Kandy .It Brings back fond memories. Buddhism is a way of life you follow the teachings of the Buddha. They follow the Lunar calendar full moon is a holiday(poya day) sorry no booze. Don't be afraid to talk to the locals. Maybe you should go to a saree shop and ask them to show you how drape a saree just say you would like to try it on you do not have to buy. A Tambili aka king coconut is always refreshing happy and safe travels

11:22 here you just passed Sri Lanka’s one of the most famous coffee shop chains called Java Lounge. Coffee is bit expensive in SL because not many locals consume coffee so the production is much less. SL’s most famous beverage is Tea.

That is a higher end coffee shop, its not tourist price. Its the standard rate for such coffee across the country. You have very clean and air-conditioned atmosphere. Price includes all those things. If you go to a regular shop and ask for a regular black coffee, it will be around LKR 100

Glad you enjoyed Sri Lanka. My most enjoyable videos of Sri Lanka were the train rides through the jungle and the forests at the higher elevations. A detailed description of the preparation of the tea was also interesting. Since I have viewed videos on India & Sri Lanka I have grown curious of the construction of the Tut - tuts. What is the comfort of riding in a Tut-tut on a scale of 1 to 10? ( the three wheeled vehicles with the canvas top)

Hey Alina, I grew up in SL and was in boarding school near, Mandy. Advise you to also tour the south coast and soak up the vibe there , so relaxing, you won’t want to leave. You must try my favourite sweet, it is similar to Turkish delight look for a dark brown chunks of firm jelly in the display windows of cafes. It is made with rice flour plus, it is so wickedly good !!! ,

Welcome to my hometown Kandy Alina! I am a fellow Canadian (23 years in Toronto), but brought up in Kandy and permanently moving back to Kandy within a month or two. When I visit Sri Lanka, I always make sure to have yummy devilled chicken and watalappam (desert like caramel pudding) or faluda at Devon restaurant just like 5 minutes walking from the Kandy lake. Address is 11 Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy. Please also try other yummy and unique food like koththu roti, pol (coconut) sambal, hoppers, egg hoppers, string hoppers, pittu, lamprais and so much more. Hey @@abeyshe1021 , for multiple reasons like family (Dad etc.) and relatives and friends there, amazing country, much more value for money compared to Canada, charity work, help develop Sri Lanka a lot, hobby farming, much more free time since have $'s, so beautiful, have Sri Lanka as a base and travel to nearby nice countries etc.

None of these travel videos show the terrific high end hotels and their buffet style food offerings in Sri Lanka! They are expensive compared to budget meals, but, hey, live a little once in a while; you already paid a lot to visit Sri Lanka! These offerings are stupendous veritable banquets that every visitor must go to and splurge a little. You will be truly AMAZED ! In Kandy, the Grand Kandyan, the Golden Crown, the Amaya, the Regency in Thannekumbura are a few with great buffets. If you are in Colombo, don't miss the Mount Lavinia Hotel, Grand Cinnamon, Kingsbury, Hilton, Galadari and Ministry of Crab buffets, to name only a few ! They have regular buffets on weekdays and special buffets on weekends! Call ahead to find out !

Oh dear Alina! Can’t understand why you didn’t just use Tuk-tuks indstead of uber? All you have to do in Colombo is walk out into the street and a Tuk-tuk will cone by in next to no time. Say exactly where you want to go (e.g. ‘Fort Railway Station please’) and agree the price BEFORE you get into the Tuk-tuk. Use google maps to track your journey if that reassures. It’s as easy as pie. Perfectly safe 😊
