Ok... I am buying some now...you nailed it... if you don’t sleep cuz of cold feet, you are draining your energy tank.. ( I’ve never mountaineered , but with freezing temps as far south as Texas, one is best to be prepared for anything now),..God bless you Eric

Great stuff Aaron. Last winter while testing gear in Eastern Europe I tested the Western Mountaineering -30F -2celsius Megalite over a 4 month period with temperatures varying from -2 celsius 28.4F down to -14 celsius 6.8F. The one area that kept me up 90% of the time was at my feet. Even wore the Smartwool mountaineering socks and the feet went cold. Upper body was always ok as I wore a fleece inside with a merino wool base layer from Aclima. The only time my feet were ok was when i wore a wool blaket as a kidney wrap from the kidneys down past my toes. I was so warm that I had to kick off my socks. Had a great nights sleep in 14 celsius 6.8F. I think that set up could have gotten me into much colder ranges. I may add that that same night I did wear a down jacket inside the bag and jerven hunter 60g bivy. At all times, I used two mats. 1 closed foam and 1 inflatable with added r value of 5.7 from Termarest and they were inside the primaloft insulated jerven bivy. However, this winter, I am looking at ditching the wool blanket and down jacket inside the bag and get down booties while also placing my rab down vest over the chest area of the bag and a North Face summit series L3 down hoody over the foot area. The joys of testing gear to find my limits and the limits of the gear is what I love to do. I appreciate your guidance. It is great to learn from those with more experience. My Instagram is beers_beards_and_bushcraft if you want to follow along my journey. Thanks for reading everyone.

I just followed you on IG, thanks! I'm going to do a "how to keep feet warm" video with lots of tips & tricks soon. Keep an eye out. Some people just have trouble with feet. I suggest they blowtorch themselves as you did. So I've heard, the Eskimo have a saying that if you want to keep your feet warm, you have to warm up your head. I've tried it where I made my head sweat in my bag and then, magically, my feet warmed up. It was unreal but it worked.

Hello Aaron. This is another great video. Thanks for posting. Along the context of staying warm, I would love to see videos on the topic of keeping your face / head warm. Potential video topics might include: hats, balaclavas, hoods (with fur ruffs), face masks, goggles, sunglasses.

Are the 40 below booties warmer?

You've shown how the Forty Below camp booties can be inserted into the outer shell of a mountaineering double boot for walking around camp while the inner boot dries. Can the Western Mountaineering Flash booties be used in this way too?
@ALinsdau
@ALinsdau 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the flash booties can. However, because they're down, they'll squish, so they won't be as warm/comfortable.

Is there a lightweight waterproof slip cover for these to wear outside if it’s wet out?

These are what I use when on the glacier outside of my tent: 40below.com/product/40-below-camp-booties-synthetic-insulated/

So I’m looking at the western mountaineering expedition booties or the 40 below booties to help keep my feet warm while glassing on mountain ridges for my hunts. They need to be waterproof or highly water resistant and keep my foot as warm as possible while stationary. I won’t be doing much walking in them and I will be using them mostly outside my tent and sometimes inside my tent while I’m cooking dinner before bed. They need to be packable as well. Do you still recommend the 40 below while stationary? Best regards friend!

Nice review. Do you change to a fresh pair of dry socks before you start using the booties after getting in the tent? Thinking about moisture/sweat. All the best from Norway 👍🏻👍🏻🇳🇴

Yes, I always put on my freshest sleeping socks and then put on the booties. It makes a huge difference.

Thanks Aaron. Got some of these for my wife after your review and they have firm soles and what feels like 1/2” foam pad. They don’t mush down like your video. Could yours be their Flash model and the link is for the Standard? We haven’t taken them out yet but seems weird being in a shoe/boot with a firm soul versus a down “sock” which yours appeared more.

Mine is more of a down sock rather than the bootie. I use the Forty Below camp booties for walking around.

If I put my hand in and and the boot immediately starts to get sweaty, as you say, then that tells me these are no good for feet as the sweat is going to make them cold. A buyer would need a product that keeps the feet warm and dry.🤣

Too true. I only use these when it's chilly out, then I tune for temperature.
