The thing I respect the most about Stephanie Meyer is that there are countless books about vampires that have made a more or less solid lore that everyone uses to a certain degree. Meyer just said “fuck it” and did whatever she wanted. I don’t like her books and think they’re poorly written, but respect the absolute gall to ignore over 100 years of vampire lore. I like how it flipped things on its head and restarted vampire fiction craze, though the books are terrible.

Because it's stupid to think there's a set rule for vampire lore. European vampire lore is way different than African or Asian or even original Amerindian lore. Dracula never burned in the sun yet he's the standard for which many based their novels upon. Besides the Twilight Saga has very detailed lore and backstory far more than what the movies drew from. It's original and unique and even the sparkling(which isn't actual sparkles) makes sense for their types of specie
@andrewb6194 Жыл бұрын
@@leahscontemporary I mean, it’s still stupid (sparkling), but alas. The big issue I have with Twipires is that they have no exploitable weaknesses. Which begs the question of why they just don’t take over the world? Gunfire won’t kill them, it’s tough to cut them with a sword, and their literally overpowered, no other force in their world can stand up to them, and their far stronger than a lot of other fictional characters and species. Even some versions of Goku and Superman would be outmatched by them.

The horrifying thing is that she isn't really wrong. I mean my cousin couldn't get his kid away from a repeatedly arrested drug addict who couldn't keep a stable job that lives with a convicted child SA offender that kept having truancy issues with their daughter. So yeah, it is really a stretch too far to say a dad got full custody.
@grandempressvicky6387 Жыл бұрын
@@aethertoast4320it's proven (at least in written statistics) that when men are willing to contest the custody, they win 40% to 60% of the time. Most custody battles are settled outside of the court without the judges rulings. I am not saying there are not exceptions to this but Judges ask questions like: Who is the primary caregiver? The ability of a parent to provide The parent-child bond The parent-parent relationship The personality and history of each parent The best interests of the child and if appropriate the wishes and feelings of the child. And if it was the case that the men fail in any of these (typically the first one is why the mother is given priority) then custody disproportionately goes to the mother. EDIT: So it is likely the case that the Judge thought the drug addict had a better ability to care for the child/the children preferred their mother than their father. In modern times, they don't just give the kids to the mom because they're the mother.

@@grandempressvicky6387That's true now. In the 70s my mother's aunt got custody of her three kids even though there was a lot of evidence she was abusive and the kids kept trying to ask and even run away to stay with their father. The father fought until he basically ran out of money and he still only got the kids when they turned 18 and the courts could no longer force them to stay with their mother. I am very glad this is no longer the case. The world was quite different 50 years ago and this is one major area of improvement. It benefits everyone for parents to be able to split custody and for kids to have a say in their custodial parent.

I specifically read the whole Twilight series back in the day, just because I didn’t want to be one of those people bitching about it and then going “oh no, I’ve never read it, I’ve just heard it’s bad”. I was coming with receipts. My dissertation was literally comparing the series with Dracula from a feminist perspective. Apart from the sexist bullshit, Twilight is mostly just dull. It’s not even really bad, it’s just incredibly fucking boring, made worse because the background characters all seem so much more interesting than the leads, though I’ve no illusions that they’d remain interesting if Smeyer actually wrote about them. Like JK Rowling, she’s just a extremely pedestrian writer who happened to tap into something at just the right time, honestly the phenomenon is more interesting than the story. I tried to do the same with 50 Shades and almost ripped my eyeballs out. I made it about 60% of the way through the first one and had to stop for my own mental health, it was just a joyless slog through the most painfully inane, misogynistic garbage I’ve ever suffered through, and I hate that fucking Eel with every fibre of my being. So yeah, TL;dr, I fully agree.

Rowling felt like a woman with a story to tell, while Meyer felt like she'd just always wanted to be "a writer." (Luckily for Rowling, there was also a certain charm in her writing proficiency increasing in tandem with Harry's age, so the books seem to roughly align the age of the target reader and the age of the main characters. The only real downside was that she became too invested in "outsmarting" the reader, and sacrificed what was likely a better ending for the one that we got.)

You know, Meyer actually inadvertently highlights the sexism in her books by how she went about all of this. While rare, there were fathers who got custody without mothers being unfit, and even in 1987, when mothers got custody, it was unusual for a mother to be allowed to move a child several states away without having a good reason for a judge for why it was in the child’s best interest to be that far from their other parent. And admits nixing Beau being as emotional as Bella since she didn’t think that boys would react that way, and Beau got his way in the end since boys were to get choices. The girl vampire couldn’t stand her ground like the boy vampire can. When Bella never had periods aside from the last book, there were no changes that HAD to be made for Beau having a penis. NONE. She made changes because she can’t see a boy being so whiny and helpless.

Anne Rice's Vampire's hair always grows back to however it looked the time they're turned. So the "elder vampire's" are *MEANT* to set the new Vampire's up before they're turned. So giving them a hair cut, shaving them, tattoos, piercings etc because once they're turned it will always go back to exactly as they looked the second they're turned. So, in the book (spoilers). One of the vampires cuts their hair short like a mans, every single night because their very long curly hair always grows back. The child Vampire's never change and according to the TV show based on the book series; if you are turned and you still have an intact Hymen, it will stay intact forever and regrow every night.

I want Stephanie Meyer to keep going with this. She just puts out 50 more versions of twilight and everytime there is another tweak, one detail in plot or writing that she changes. Everytime there is a long foreword addressing and explaining it way too extensively. And someday people will be like, "Yeah, put all these changes in one book and this would actually be kinda ok".

This is amazing timing! I just finished your last four and a half hour twilight breakdown masterpiece this morning.

Idk if the difference in the length is the gender differences, so much as S.Meyer's improvement at the craft? It's like the quote: "If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written a Shorter Letter." She just got more concise and less ramble-y.

I like your idea of Charlie the vampire slayer. I always thought Twilight would be a bit more interesting if Charlie knew about the supernatural in Forks.
@eldrichnemo9312 Жыл бұрын
I don't think Charlie is too involved but there IS a Twilight/Supernatural fanfic "The Wedding Crashers" that takes place during Jacob and Reneesme's wedding. The focus is on Sam, Dean, and Leah Clearwater and is mainly a defense of the latter character. Spoilers: Castiel shows up when the brothers are threatened and it does not go well for the vampires.

ngl the description for Edyth’s appearance was very… interesting. 🥴 apparently her being extremely skinny and frail ( to the point of seeing her ribs and collarbones ) is gorgeous while Edward gets to be chiseled with muscles/broad shoulders, but it honestly would have been nice if SMeyer had described Edyth as being more toned, and broader shouldered, less dainty and not so …. tumblr thinspo inspired. i’m not expecting her to be absolutely shredded but come on. like Smeyer wants to call out the misogyny but also just sort of falls right into it at the same time 💀

As for your point at the part mentioning if Vampire's hair could grow back- yes. Imagine you have a completed painting in front of you. You can rip it up and and scribble on it and such, but unless you break it into multiple pieces and burn it, it's just going to reform back to the way it was before you did anything to it. It explains why there's a point in the book when Edward fights the Volturi and his face gets cracked, but it doesn't stay that way later in the book. They're forever the way they had been at the time of their original "death".

@Melissa-sx9vh Жыл бұрын
No actually hair doesn't grow back, Smeyer says it in The short second life of Bree Tanner. Hair that is ripped off doesn't grow back and cannot get reattached with venom (contrary to a chunk of muscle/skin), you'll just have a bald spot for all eternity. The cracked face is only in the movie iirc, in the books he is just in pain.

Compared to Twilight - the original, this one is actually much better when it comes to actual writing, characters and the finale is also fun, fresh and somehow satisfying. Also it opens doors for Beau x Edward/Jacob fanfics. I do think she could have adapted some of the other scenes better. But it is also still Stephanie Meyer. Like the SA scenes - for me the Beau one was reasonable, it's just less likely for a man to get SAd in dark alleys, especially as Beau was written as much bigger and threatening than Bella. For Royal - with how beautiful he was, I would still prefer to see the backstory being upholded, but obviously instead of being attacked by his wife, he would be SAd by his future father-in-law and his rich friends. Or maybe she could tell the story in different way, when he was drugged by his mother-in-law or some other woman and left in ditch to die or pushed to unliving himself, because he "betrayed" his fiancé. 1:05:00 Personally I think she is just lazy and not thinking enough. She probably was like - oh I need to change some more, what is like the most obvious reason to almost die for a rich man in the past? Ok, beaten up by some mofos. Do I also think she believes it makes men less masculine and that women couldn't SA someone and that it was less likely to be SAd by a group of men back then? Yes - but at the same time, I think in this case it's more about being lazy and going for the easiest route. 1:05:50 Wait it was more expensive? Lol. Definitely should have been somehow cheaper, especially for the electronic version. I didn't notice because I like rum and broad seas.🏴☠️ Like at least give a discount to people who read OGs.

Writer rule #***: You don’t write fanfiction of your own story. You can write fanfics, but not gain money from it, or skin it and call it original. (50 Shades of Gray, and Immortal Instruments.) Fanfiction can grow into something new, but not without forced growth, and much pruning.
