As a Lithuanian, I lived in Taiwan for 5 years from 2016-2021. It is a beautiful country that is free with a vibrant civil society. The people are very friendly and polite. I say that their values have more in common with the US and Japan than with China. When I did business in China, I encountered many opportunistic Chinese people who liked to take advantage of you for their own gain. The Taiwanese did no such thing, which I really appreciate. I strongly believe that if Xi Jinping takes control of Taiwan, its freedom of speech and independent media, as well as its independent judiciary will end. Does Taiwan want this ? I think not. Lithuania lived through Soviet rule for 50 years and I completely understand the Taiwanese desire not to live under a Chinese dictatorship. The Chinese communist party are control freaks and will quickly eliminate Taiwan's freedoms if they seize control. Look what Xi Jinping did to China's own economy. Taiwan will backslide if it falls under Chinese control. Taiwan should fight back if China invades. As a Lithuanian, I fully support Taiwan's people. China will lose. It has not fought a war since 1979. The day China invades Taiwan is the day countries start to establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan. It already operates like an independent country. An unprovoked invasion is the perfect excuse for other countries to recognize it as such. Lithuania will happily be first in line to do that.

The issue whether Taiwan belongs to China or not is already settled with UN resolution 2758! In 1979, UN 2758 ruled that PRC mainland China is the only legitimate representative of China, so Taiwan belongs to PRC mainland China! It is still valid and the only one that counts! It has more than 180 countries' support superseding any other treaties, documents & agreements!!!!!!!! Its Mao's fault. He let Chiang Kaishek get away and build a government there way back when which is why this is an issue in the first place. The government of Taiwan, which was in fact the governing body of all of China until forced into exile by the Chinese Communists, has a legitimate claim to the throne of current day China. If the communist regime were to suddenly collapse, then the government in Taiwan would be viewed as the next in line to control China. Thats why this issue is so serious to Communist China. Taiwan's existence represents an existential crisis that they must resolve to achieve full legitimacy. Until then, the Chinese Civil War between the communists and chinese nationalists in essence continues without being resolved.
