That was really interesting to watch. Horses are naturally suspicious of anything spongy or slippery under their feet. It takes a good bit of trust to overcome that hesitation. They all did a great job meeting the challenge.

Roni and Lena aced that! Annie did really well too. Such a trusting youngster. And well-done Gracie! That was an interesting challenge for the horses. I can see it would be as great a challenge for the human who is trying to encourage the horse onto the scary, squishy mattress.

I've never thought of it but what a great tool! It teaches/practices so many things. Drive, draw, trust, balance & core building, entertainment for our curious horses and desensitization to other "odd" things they may come across in life. They all did wonderfully of course. Lena had an advantage of having seen it before but was awesome. Annie did excellent as expected even though she's the youngest and least worked with she had all fours on the first time at 45 seconds, wow! Mr. Wilde did pretty much as I expected, he's such a good(& silly) boy. I was most surprised by Luke as we're so used to him easily handling anything. He did great but had to give it a serious think first, lol! I was supper impressed by Roni. I would have expected he and Luke's response to be swapped. I'm most proud of Gracie. Her anxious nature could have really made it go sideways but she is really gaining trust in you more & more everyday and kept her nerves under control while doing something scary. I almost feel like I have a relationship with your horses similar to my relationship with mine. That's a testament to how you go about your videos and teaching. It helps people understand horses more intimately. Excellent work, I will definitely be utilizing what I've learned today! Thank you!

Love the experiments. I’ve heard it said that when teaching a skill , what you are actually doing is making your idea the horse’s’s idea.
@StableHorseTraining2 жыл бұрын
Everything we do with a horse we are asking them to adopt our ideas for a bit. Imagine just haltering them, it must be our idea, they certainly don't walk up to us with a rope and say "halter me", they'd much prefer you just open the gate and let them free :)

Such a terrific idea! With Annie I noticed after that first touch of the mattress she looked to the corner where the water is; "Hey Dad. I'll go in the water and splash instead. OK?"Bravo Annie!! I wonder if you sitting on a lawn chair on the mattress would they all come check you, the chair and the mattress out? Or tarp on mattress? This exercise proves why so few horses sleep in the house. They are picky about mattress firmness. You are such a blessing in these horses lives. Second to teaching them to trust, you teach them to try for you. Whatever you ask calmly they will try.

I loved this, you always have great video ideas. Some of your horses are champs but even Gracie succeeded much quicker than I believed she would 💫🥇🏆. It made me laugh when you said that it was normal for wildies to be a bit concerned because they don't get to see mattresses, and I thought "well, you know domestic horses don't get to see mattresses either, they don't sleep in comfy beds with mattresses and pillows usually" 😅😂🤣 I hope you are feeling a bit better (as this video has clearly been done before your close up with Annie's foot) 😘?

Hi there, just a thought. Here in the UK there are plenty of discarded old mattresses left by the road side or dumped in side lanes. If horse owners could be persuaded of the benefits of your exercise then they might be tempted to acquire a discarded one for their horses’ use. Thereby achieving two things at once. Love your videos. 😍🐎.

Gracie is the arabian and she was the slowest of the whole bunch. I've never encountered an Arabian that is smarter than the average horse and consider it a strong bias against other horses by the arabian horse community, and the proof here is how long it takes Gracie to learn anything at all....
