I started out with a DM10X as my first e drum set but changed it to a Roland TD30k and now TD50k after 3 years. You can't beat that great, reliable Roland build quality.

The "deal" they made with Roland at the time was the fact that Roland's pattents over mesh head triggered system didn't cover single ply, multiple contact point trigger systems. So, Roland could not sue them. Eventually, the pattents got expired, and now we have a lot of e-drums with mesh heads. That was the main "deal".

Hey Justin, been a long time since I've commented. I still have my DM10 studio mesh, and still love it. All except for the glitchy hats, though I have them dialed in pretty good now. Great video, thanks for covering the DM10 again!

I have the dm 10 X mesh. I got it a year ago for 500€👌🏻 I had to replace the foam in all the pads, but no big deal, still in perfect conditions in general. I've been going throught the adjustments and got a very cool kit sound. It's pretty much kit number 6 with a different kick drum and lots of adjustments. I just turn to 0 almost everything, reverb, fx.... trying to make it sound as realistic as possible. I only left some filtering and compression. Kick sounds in this module are crap, but somehow I managed to make it my favourite. My "complaints"...: hi hat isn't the best, ride bell is so hard to trigger it and general triggering slightly delayed.

I have the DM10 module that I use on my Alesis nitro kit, I use all kinds of different triggers such as yamaha and GOedrum. The DM10 module is very versatile and works well with all makes of e drum triggers on the market. What i like the most is that it has individual 1/4 inch jacks, not a cable snake, the newer ones use a cable snake witch I think is limiting. I picked it up on ebay used and it works great.

This video was VERY helpful thank you! I'm not even a drummer but I have been contemplating for a while now the idea of adding an electronic kit (mostly just for triggering) to my home studio (since I'm not set up to do acoustic drums and have about every drum sample library out there) so most drummers could come in and play to the song for me but have been very overwhelmed by all the options. Since I don't play it's hard for me to justify spending any more than I absolutely need to but i want something that will last and be good for drummers to play. This video helped some, thank you :)

I have the MKii pro version. Only a few months so far, but I'm loving it. A great thing about the kit is all the rims trigger too. I've programed two more high toms (total 6), a cowbell, and a 4th cymbal on the tom tom rims. Rimshot for the snare rim. Only complaint is the cymbals aren't as responsive as real cymbals, but everything else is 100% better than an acoustic set. And yes, mesh heads are nice and quiet and you can tighten to get whatever recoil you wish. Headphones are perfect for those nighttime jams in the house while others sleep upstairs, and two speakers for when it's showtime!

The original dm10 studio, where I swapped out the mylar with mesh on all the toms, the snare and the kick myself. Really easy, and not too expensive. The mesh feels a lot better btw, particularly on the snare drum, as well as being a whole lot quieter. Also added a Roland cymbal since the dm10 module has an extra input available, and purchased the Alesis trigger io cheap used, just in case I want to go crazy and add stuff at some later point ;) Anyhow, as a non-drummer who wants to have a more organic way of inputting drums in my home studio, this is more than good enough. PS: I dont really care about the sounds on the module. I use Addictive Drums on my pc, which is far better in all departments.

Hi Justin This is a repeat of an earlier post I made and I'm glad to see info on the Alesis Kits. First off thanks for all the info on edrums. Like other old timers I have read on this forum, I also have been out of the scene for many years. Last Club gig I did was back in 1978. Getting back in the percussion grove and recently purchased the Alesis DM10 MKII Pro. Just got it set-up and working out the triggers and a few issues. Quite a bit different than my earlier acoustic kit. (Walberg and Auge double bass, gold sparkle. Probably a name you may not be familiar with.) I've had it for a month now but with work and all, I haven't had as much time as I would like to use the Kit. I'll update on here as I get the kinks worked out and the cobwebs dusted off of me.... Thanks again for all the videos you've provided, it helped me research all the options before making the decision to purchase this kit.

thank you for making this video 5 years ago. haha I am a retired Army guy, but thought it would be neat to learn an instrument, so I was looking at the drums. My neighbor has a DM10 kit that he wanted to get rid of. Im not sure yet which version, but he was sure it did not have mesh heads. I was thinking if i replace all the heads with mesh, it might be a great starter kit for me, as long as its a reasonable deal, and in decend shape. I really enjoyed the full breakdown, along with pros and cons. great video, and thank you again!

I bought the DM10 Studio kit and added an extra kick back in 2015. It doesn't sound too bad with the wireless headphones I use and is still holding strong, considering I'm kind of a heavy hitter. The extra cymbal doesn't choke and it can be difficult to tune. For the price I would probably buy it again. I don't like the look of Yamaha and Roland is out of my price range.

Just bought a DM10 Studio second hand that had the mylar heads changed out for mesh heads. First impressions: right after getting it home, setting it up and turning it on I could hear one of the pads "ghost triggering" while there was nothing remotely close to it. I also noticed a huge discrepancy between certain pads in how well they would register a hit. I mucked around with the sensitivity and threshold settings for about 2 hours before deciding the factory reset the thing and start over. After doing so, now the hihats were "ghost triggering" as well as the same pad from before. Okay, so I was able to sort that out by adjusting the threshold a bit. But now the pad that wasn't registering hits, or just barely. Okay, so I turned the sensitivity all the way up to 99.... still not getting anywhere near the level of the other pads.... changed the curve so it now basically has no dynamics at all, but at least it's as loud as the rest now. Sigh, good enough I guess. It's an okay kit, but compared to my Roland TD-8 (which was a breeze to setup and it just.... works), I'm a bit disappointed with it tbh.

I had DM studio MKII kit since september 2017 and it shows like very reliable e-kit. With it,s heavy duty rack , big me sh pads and cymbals seems to be Ok for practicing at home. It is true that module can,t produce sounds like Roland and Yamaha but if you put some effort and mess up with settings you could have some decent sounds. All in all it is very attractive and looks way better than Roland and Yamaha in this price point.

Hello!!!! Some questions to u brother: Is the hihat controller on the DM10 MK2 PRO kit output midi note CC4? Or in other words, is it a Continuous Controller? I'm asking this so I could use it in Superior Drummer or any VST for that matter and have almost like 6 to 8 articulations corresponding to the hihat controller open/close range value (0 to 127). So that gives more articulations to work with and is smoother transition especially with a monstrous VST like SUPERIOR Drummer 3 (rather than the usual 4 notes sent by the module when hitting the pad like: closed, half open, open, close pedal and splash hit). And one more question, does the hihat pad of dm10 Mk2 has 2 zones? Does it have an bow sound and a tip sound in one of the positions of the hh pedal? (say hh pedal is now closed and hitting at the bow and tip produce different midi note values or different sounds from the module itself) Could u enlighten me on these.... Pleazzzeeee???

I've had a few stints into playing e-drums in the past, but that was before they could actually fully replace an acoustic kit nicely. My singer sent me a link asking: "Isn't this the kit you were looking at?", it was a DM10X Mesh. Long story shorter... I ordered it. By the time it arrived, the DM10 completely disappeared from any store on the internet except, perhaps, used. I had a blast programming my first kit, which has evolved a bit since due to playing live (almost exactly like your tips on playing Live! LOL) but I've been playing this kit 'out-of-the-box' live at gigs since I got it, and I LOVE IT!!! We've always had plans to run the Bass, snare, cymbals and toms each as individual outs for further control at the mixing board, but it's been sounding so good with my simple mix using the onboard sliders, that we haven't got that far yet - although I do have a saved version of my kit set up for it. I love the mesh heads. Not only quieter, but no dents. They seem indestructible. I love the cymbal pads too. I had no idea they're going to break on me. I love my DM10X Mesh kit!!! We're also currently looking into VST, but decided to put that on hold after listening to the onboard sounds I have set up again through our PA(s). My singer owns a sound company and uses nothing but JBL and top-notch amps and gear, etc., and my drums just Thunder. I've always loved how it sounds. So it was surprising to me to hear people are replacing them via VST. I guess I play these like an entirely different instrument than my Turbo Tour Customs (Yamaha only made these hand-painted power beauties for a very limited time) - I just don't expect them to behave the same - these are digital, afterall. But seeing how VST software can enhance and improve triggering and such... I'm definitely digging deeper. Cheers Justin! Great show! I love the 65 Drums Show!

I would like to know that can I replace Alesis DM 10 MK II Pro cymbals into Roland cymbals? I'm not concern about the crash, but can I replace the hihat with VH-11 and ride with CY-13R or CY-15R? I have owned a DM10X Mesh for 3 years now. Durability has been so-so. I have had to replace the module once, but that was my own fault (left it plugged in during a storm), but the 2 12" toms have all but fallen apart. The center trigger plate has broken into 3 pieces. I am about to repair both of them, so hopefully that gets her back up and running. I don't regret the purchase at all, as the DM10X has served me well. I can't dump 3K on a Roland.

Issue is I moved two years ago and when I turned on the module, it lit up, but all I would hear in my headset was high-pitched, alien pig, squealing and I can’t figure out how to correct this.. At first, I could turn the wheel for different kits, but would still hear the squeal but now everything is unresponsive … factory reset did not correct anything… any ideas?

The first X mylar that came out also had a better rack :) I loved the mylar BTW, way more natural, but very noisy . Keep in mind that if you want to convert the X to mesh , the 12" pads are very shallow. And if you don't have any problem with noise, placing a yoga mat underneath the mesh and a piece of cloth to reduce wear ,reduces the trampoline effect

I hate that the new modules dropped the 2 Aux outputs. Not sure if any of you have done this, but with the original DM10 Module, you can set it up to have 4 separate outputs to your board. I did this with the DM10 X Mesh. I panned the kick to the L main channel, the snare to the R main, all the toms to the Aux R out and all of the cymbals to to Aux L out. That gives my sound engineer the ability to mix and eq the drums much better in a live setting.

I also added and extra drum module the Alessis Trigger IO to add on more triggers. The kick drum is way too loud though...I wish there was a way to make it quiet. Its so loud when playing thorough a PA it really messes your rhythm up and the PA has to be too loud.

are these kits interchangeable ? the reason I ask is I bought a used kit that has the snare stand but the play along grooves sounds like 70's Mustache music (if you get my comparison), no newer grooves and the sound options for each drum are limited. also registering at alesis (now imusic) doesn't have any downloadable content to update them

I have the MKII Pro. For the price, you can't beat it. It's huge though. And it took some time learning to dial in the settings for the ride cymbal, especially. After I got the hang of how to change it up, I've set it how I like it. I've had it about four months and I'm still experimenting with the different preset kits, but I turned one into a custom setting that I think fits most of what I would play in a live situation. The dual zone pads help immensely in that regard. I do wonder if the Alesis Pro X hi-hat is compatible with the MKII Pro module. Anyone have any insight?

I bought both a DM10 studio mesh and DM10X mesh used of Craigslist and both were/are great kits. I wouldn't buy mylar anyway, and if we could afford Rolands, we would buy Rolands... But if you're on this page, you probably can't either, and for the price new/used, these kits are great. I sold the studio kit because we started using a real kit live, but kept the X kit because 1. it's awesome, 2. quiet, and 3. better control for rehearsal volume wise. I would like to hear the MKII brain, but running the DM 10 thru a live PA sounded great. I will admit, you have to do your homework on how it functions, and every one of my triggers (rim/head) had to be individually dialed in for the way I play (I hit hard; probably too hard for e-drums), but you can make this kit dynamic for both soft and hard playing.

Have the DM10 X MESH - It's been a very good kit. Fun to play no breakdowns - Mostly now using as a trigger for my superior drummer 3 software. Wondering if you can update just the module . If it would work properly. Thanks so much.

When I wanted to buy a electronic drum set my first plan was to go cheep. But at the same time I knew that I wanted something to last. What helped me decide to buy the Dm10 x kit instead of the crimson because it came down to that choice. I got the Dm10x kit because of all the second hand parts out there. I bought a new tom pad to have 5 pads. The kick pad came unsolderd Alesis sent me a knew kick pad with the stand. I bought the hihat upgrade. I did that because I want to use it in video's. I don't like hihats that don't move isn't really fun. I bought 2 extra used cymbals with the arm and brace to hook it up. I use the original hihat cymbal as a splash I took a few peaces of an old cymbal arm to make the arm long enough. Basically I have 2 splashes. 3 crashes and a ride plus the new hihat. After playing a while all the cymbals look like they where bought at the same time. I tride with 6 toms I managed to hook 4 up front by hooking one on each cymbal post. You know what I mean. how I did 6 toms was with the old kick pad . I took the brace from the snare and switched it with the tom. You can make a 10 inch kick pad doing that trick. Anyway I went back to 5 toms. I will be ordering for a single kick pedal the same mark as my double kick. I have the kick set for a double kick sound. So I want to a deep long kick sound for the single kick. From the get go I thought it sounded like shit! I was using really good AKG headphones real retro old school shit. I realized that they take to much juice. I was at a dallier King in the section that has headphone mic's and adapters. I saw 2 sets of AKG head phones. $4. each. I thought someones retarded. I grabbed them both and bought them. When I plugged a set into the dm10.. bingo. Perfect. I decided not to go do the update plus since I bought it new I figure its pretty up to date. I have 2 custom sets programmed. I keep getting the sound to be better. It feels like a dry kit that We have to set up with all the right fx and compression and panning EQ. I have noticed that Each part has it's own flexible settings. Then the entire kit has a setting. The trigger settings seem to be for the entire deal. But ya there is a lot of choice. I have everything tight. I plan to have my drummer jam buddy come over. I know what kind of sound I want and I am happy with the sound. When its past through a mixer I can really get it into that get you in the gut feeling if I want to. I think the kit was made for recording engineers. I don't see how a drummer would enjoy them self's because of the time it takes to adjust everything. Just once the learning part is done. I think its really easy to get a really good sound to match almost anystyle. I see it more as a creative tool . I like the 682drums.com mesh kit. I like the look it gives. I will cost me extra because of all the pads. I still have 2 dual trigger's that I did not split. I will be splitting the kick trigger input. I hope that I can use it.. I will have to test that if it dosn't work I'll spare the rim trigger that I am planning on using for a closed hihat sound. I really don't want to mess around with the hi hat stand. So I will just add one last cymbal. As for making youtube video's I still have a lot of practice to go through on the drums. I have a few video's up but the sound isn't good and I am basically just messing around in those video's. I honestly like the sound that I can get out of the kit. But umm I see a nice app review just the other day. Also Pearl has an awesome new drum module I could hook everything up to. At the price though I can go grab a zoom livetrack L-12 with a good mic set with an extra kick mic and 2 subwoofers. My buddy has 2 kick drum's on his beast. I lost count on the toms. I'll need my current mixer to get the job done. But ya it would be a much funner experience. I'm a guitar player!

Hi Justin. Great video. What are your thoughts on the DM10 Mark 1 drum module? You can get them on ebay for $250-300 US. Are the sounds good and relevant for 2021? I'm looking at it as an optional module for a DIY A-E build for church. thanks.

i had a DM10 STUDIO MESH.. It's a nice kit with plenty of sounds ,but you have to fiddle about to get the exact kit that you want as some crappy sounds are lumped in with cool sounds to pad out the number of kits available. quite a sturdy rack EXCEPT the snare arm which came loose.. tried to tighten it and it just went oval . ended up wrapping the end in duct tape.. but that worked loose too.. they need to sort that out..

I buy all my drum gear used and only when I can get it for a great price. My DM10 kit was the original with the surge cymbals and mylar drum pads. The unit "did not work right" and I picked it up for 150.00. The guy also tossed in a D5 module which also "Did not work right" . I knew before I got there he had the wrong power supply and I was correct. With the correct PS both work fine. The DM10 module can be a bit of a pain to set up. I have the Roland PD125 snare, PD120KD kick, and 2 PD-120 toms, plus the Roland 11 hi-hat. They all work with this unit but getting the sensitivity correct is pretty much trial and error. The actual sounds are usable but will most likely use the unit to trigger drum software like EZ drummer. For what I paid for the unit it is a no brainer. I think it is a good alternative if you cannot afford the Roland stuff and there are plenty out in CL land if you are patient and wait for a deal to come along, I am not a fan of the surge cymbals. I think they are VERY LOUD and I am replacing them with some Roland cymbal pads.

So I have had my pro MKII for a couple days now and I gotta say it kicks some ass. The sounds are way better than I initially thought and the sound quality is actually better than on the MKII Studio and crimson versions. Plus the effects section gives you a very nice palette of options. I was initially upset I wasn't able to afford the strike. But I really don't miss it now. In fact I really prefer the actual drums of my kit though I do wish I could have got my hands on that module. But the module on this aint no slouch. Its probably the most powerful and advanced module besides their strike.

Just wanted to ask how much of a difference there is in the DM10 MKII Pro Module vs Command Advanced Drum Module on the studio kit? I just returned the Studio kit and ordered the DM10 MKll Pro Kit, not because I was unhappy with the the Studio kit, just decided I would rather have the bigger sizes of everything, including having a dedicated snare stand. There is not much info out there on the differences between these two modules, but I would think the Pro module has to be somewhat better? Thanks

I own two dm pro kits with mylar heads, surge cymbala and i bought additional smart trigger and hart dynamics ecymbal 2 cymbals. I wanted full double bass kit for extreme metal it has worked ok there are miss trigger issues and the kick drums where worthless if given the option id probably opt for something else the only things i plan to keep are the ,cymbals, rack, cables, and other hardware. the module has had poor soldering and will ghost trigger fairly often so i plan on selling or trashing it depending now that td20's are getting more affordable i may snag one

I know this is an old video but I just came across this video today. I'm from India and I've been planning to get an electronic drum. The Alesis (this one) costs $1800 in India while the Roland I'm eyeing, TD-15KV costs $4000. Would it be better to purchase the Alesis? There's also another kit from Carlsbro, the CSD600 that retails for $950.

Hi Justin, between the DM10 studio mesh and dtx 532k, which one would you recommend? In my country, the DM10 studio mesh is slightly cheaper than the 532k, although I intend to add the Pro X hi hat if im getting the DM10 studio mesh, which would make it slightly more expensive than the 532k in the end. thanks!

I have a seconhand dm10x pro kit I bought a month ago and I'm quite happy with it. I bought not even 2 years ago, an Alesis Dm6 kit, and for already a couple of months I can´t play it anymore, since all the cymbal pads have broken somehow in different ways, same for the kick, and now the snare. It turns out that it's better to buy a new kit, instead of repairing the current one. Well, I´m no drum expert, but also not a neandertal caveman who destroys drum kits by default. So 2 questions: Does anyone can tell me if its NORMAL that these things break this easily? And what would be a next step for a new kit, in terms of material quality, but also technic evolution? I was wondering between Alesis DM10 Mesh Kit or the Alesis Crimson II kit. Thanks

I have a DM10 Module, purchase new 2 years ago, I slowly upgraded my Kit from a Alesis DM6. 2 - Alesis 10" Mesh pads, Snare and floor tom, 2 - 8" Alesis Mesh toms, Kick Pintech 8" Mesh. Replaced All Cymbal's with Roland this was done slowly ebay used. Alesis cymbal's are crap, I am a medium hitter! they die and are not as accurate as roland. Within 6 months of the purchase I started using Addictive Drums 2, I only own 4 software Drum kits but you can modify these and make alot more. I think the DM10 is great for us budget E-Drummers and the module is a great triggering device for acoustic also.

hi im thinking getting the alesis dm10 mkii pro vs the new yamaha dtx62k ( middle one with hihat stand) i see the strnegths and weakness of both but im stuck which one to get i worry about alesis reliability i would just get the yamaha but i am greddy when i see the alesis dm10 mkii pro thing is its mostly for jazz type style ( but also all other genres) id like hear peoples opinions about this decision ( i thought about the roland $1500 kit as well) i cant make a decision lol :D p.s.s i mostly will go into my roland studio capture into superior drummer 3 out to studio monitors and my westone in ears so that may influence choice too i just feel like yamaha is giving you real quality for only $1500 where as the alesis is durability issues and roland is cheaping out in several ways but has durability and resell value what do you think? what what you do in that context?
