This is the most informative explanation of how to care for Amaryllis bulbs that I have ever seen. Thank you so much!

1:21 the point where Griffin gets all excited because he thought Jim was giving him attention but quickly realizes he was mistaken. Just look at that tail 😄

Great explanation. You make it so easy to understand. Thanks. These flowers bring so much joy to watch, just how God blessed us with His beautiful nature.

I think Griffin is part human - while sitting on the couch, he turned and looked at the camera like he was part of the conversation. lol Great info on amaryllis, thank you.

Here in Florida, I wait until the day after Christmas and hit up the stores for the discounted Amaryllis bulbs and plant them in the garden. They don't naturally flower for Christmas for me, but that's okay. Downside of Amaryllis is they are magnets for our Lubber grasshoppers. The upside of that is it is easy to find and control the lubbers by checking the Amaryllis.

I just learned this year we can plant them outside, so put last year's out. It looked good (though no flowers). Bought 2 new ones which arrived last week, so this is very timely for me! Plan to put these outside in the spring.

Thanks Jim and Stephany! I’m in Florida zone 9b(ish). The foliage on my planted Amaryllis took a beating in hurricane Milton. I was afraid to cut it back, but I’m headed outside to do it now. Thanks again!

I live in Florida and just became obsessed with amaryllis after seeing a ton last spring in Leu Gardens. They naturally bloom here in central FL in about February. Clivia are also a great similar foliage and showy blooming plant that I got with my amaryllis this year.

I put a huge one in the ground several years ago and it thrived, enduring a prolonged freezing ice spell (zone 8a/b in north Louisiana). Bloomed prolifically and made 2 babies.

Recently I bought a prepared multi-bulb pre-potted amaryllis arrangement, from another national retailer. The foliage has begun to emerge but no bloom stalks yet. As I understand it amaryllis bulb growth can vary as to whether the foliage or bloom stalks emerge first. I'm excited to see how they turn out. I have them placed in my western-facing living room bay window. I would eventually like to plant these outdoors in my zone 8A NC garden and see how they would do there.

Keep turning the pot as the bloom stalk grows, they can get a lean

If/when you plant them in the ground do you still plant them high with half the bulb showing?
@JimPutnam6 күн бұрын
We have about a third of the bulb above the ground.

During the rest period, should I continue to water regularly?
@katiekane52476 күн бұрын
I keep mine year after year. The hardest part is getting them to dry down and go dormant in north Georgia during the fall. I put them in a dark closet after all the summer foliage is gone and just forget them for 6 weeks. Don't start to water until growth resumes.
@VickiBurgess-e4hКүн бұрын
No, you don't water them during the dormant time. Once you bring them out then you start to water and fertilize them.🤗

Thanks for the info! I'm guessing these would do great with spring planting in the yard? : Atlanta 8a/7b
@LeanneD45 күн бұрын
Yes, they’ll do great outside with a spring planting. I’m in metro ATL and have had ours in an outdoor bed for 10 years or so. They’ve spread very gradually over that time, and now we have probably a couple dozen bulbs in a 5’ x 5’ patch from the 3-4 original bulbs gifted by my mother-in-law. They’re super easy care and no fuss outside in Atlanta.

Are there any you can plant and just keep in the ground all the time? Zone 7b. I was told Apple Blossom…I need to try.
@dylan82856 күн бұрын
Might as well do one about poinsettias too, seems like even if you try keeping them they just want to die
@beckyscheller93586 күн бұрын
You did not talk about using a stake with them. Do you use one?
@JimPutnam6 күн бұрын
Not if they have enough light. They will flop if they are stretching from a lack of light and will need staking
@BritishWestIndian6 күн бұрын
Does it reflower in nature? I mean where in the warmer world are the lights turned off for 8-10 wks?
@JimPutnam5 күн бұрын
They reflower when days get shorter every year. We just fool them into doing it when we want it to happen.

I’ve found out Amaryllis bulbs don’t always come back and rebloom. After doing what has to be done, they get beautiful foliage but they don’t always rebloom.
@katiekane52476 күн бұрын
I've had mine for years. They must be allowed to gather strength for the next bloom by feeding after flowering and using their leaves to store plant sugars
@samueljaramillo42216 күн бұрын
@ I’ve done what you mentioned and then store them in the dark then for a few months. Then I bring them out to plant them. As I said, some present a stalk with a bloom some don’t ,just foliage.
@monicahennessy564819 сағат бұрын
@@katiekane5247 I followed all the steps except for fertilizing them after flowering (learned something new today). So far, just leaves coming back, so we'll see if I get lucky. Will be sure to feed them on my next attempt.
