It is funny, I went 40 years or more never having seen a single one in the wild, I have now moved to Germany and lucky to live in a beautiful place with farms and forests everywhere. My job takes me out early in the morning with my hours often being 1am to 6 am or later and all of it is spent outside delivering, walking and other things but as much as I sometimes hate the work, I love it really because finally I am seeing these owls and they are just so beautiful !! What I never realised though is the noise they would make, their calls etc etc because I had all my life assumed that it would be the classic "hoo oo hooo" type of noise you would probably had you not have heard it associate when people say make an owl noise but my god it is not, at least with Barn owls it is not and when I first heard them they scared the life out of me, I thought it was an owl that had caught a baby bird or in fact it was baby barn owls screaming for their parents or something when actually it was just the barn owls I watch and see every morning, it is not the sounds I expected at all Such beautiful birds, although I have to confess I love every single animal that exists lol
@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre2 ай бұрын
Ohh so interesting, I am so glad that you are getting to hear owls. I actually went to Germany this year and was upset that I didnt hear any morning chorus of song birds, so I am glad to hear there are still areas with birds shouting. xx
@Pobsta-de7hb2 ай бұрын
@@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre Yes it is so beautiful here, or at least the part in NRW I live, sure life is a little hard with my German language skills still at novice level but hey, the animals, it is a different world to what I have lived before. I even saw a young wolf following a small group of deer a few weeks ago, the deers still amaze me, weasals, deers, rabbits are everywhere in my garden in the streets, in the early hours of course not day time. I love it but I must confess the owls are my high light, they are such a wonderful looking bird to watch whether sat perched or flying. I even had a huge buzzard attempt to grab my puppy a few months ago just days after we bought him home, was a surreal experience, I never even knew they would do that, he now has a buzzard proof spiked vest when he is out, I never even knew they existed before this either, for dogs!

Barn owls are very common in the country I live in (Brazil), especially on the cities. But the sad thing is that there is a myth spread across the country saying that these owls carry bad omen, and every time one of them land at the roof of our houses, someone will die. And, because of that, a lot of people harm the owls, throwing stones at them, piercing their eyes, cutting their wings. People really torture these owls here just because of a stupid legend :(

I’ve put a owl box up at the edge of my wood, pigeons have been trying to nest in it so I have tried my best to scare them out. To my horror today I banged on the pole that holds the box and 2 of the most amazing white owls flew out. I’m kicking myself now.....

@blitz214 жыл бұрын
Hi Sadie, yes they’ve been back and forth but it’s not that easy to see them as the box is pointing away from the house. And I just know they hide when I have a camera ready. Lol. Alls well though. Is the male larger, I thought it had pretty big wingspan?

If I have Barn Owl in future, can I feed him a fresh beef/breast chicken from supermarket? Also what else they can eat?
@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre Жыл бұрын
Definitely not, birds of prey need a whole carcass diet which means they need the bones and fur/feathers, never anything from a supermarket. Our Barn Owls mostly eat day old chicks, mice and baby rats and actually spit beef out if you offer it to them!

Owls are not pets. When they grow into adulthood they become too difficult to handle. If they are then released into the countryside they haven’t a clue how to hunt. A friend of mine takes unwanted adult owls from the RSPA and houses them in large cages on her small holding. She currently has about fifteen.

@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre5 жыл бұрын
British Barn Owls have no oil on their feathers which adds to silent flight along with fringed edges on leading flight feathers. Your right about the small body feathers! in moult season its almost like i need a hoover in the aviaries!!

while i prefer Ravens...barn owls are also very endeering birds...there was once a time when barn owls were hunted due to a mix of superstition,as well as farmers killing them due the fact that they would pick off chickens...though lately they have slowly become a welcome sight in barn rafters due to the fact that they keep the rat and mouse population down. ive heard stories of roosting barnowls becmoning curious,even friendly with barn owners.
