Jeff, I’ve used this tactic for the last several years after seeing one of your videos years ago. I’ll tell you what, we had an annual scrape that we always had pics of year round use. There was no vine, rather a low hanging busy branch off of a tree. But I added a vine at that spot, and the activity literally doubled. This to me is one of the easiest and most effective way to record what deer are using the property. And during the hunting season it is invaluable.

Best scrape ever! I started mine 2 years ago after watching your videos. I have some of the coolest videos of deer of all sizes hitting my vines year round! I just set up my blind in thick junk because I can't hang a stand in this spot but plan of shooting the best buck in the neighborhood this season over my scrape. Love it, love the footage I get and love seeing deer use it. Best tip ever!

Jeff, I can also validate this tactic. I added, what the fam like to call licking sticks, throughout our farm and everyone of them consistently get hit year round. I have trail cam pics of both of the mature bucks we harvested this year hitting one in particular. The does and fawns are on them very consistently. Great advice, people should try them. It’s unbelievable how popular they are. Central KS and I used small sections of cottonwood saplings.

Hey Jeff, watched this video this morning but I had to come back to comment. Went out this evening to broadcast my buckwheat and went ahead and checked a camera that I had on a new mock vine scrape I put up 2 weeks ago just to make sure the camera was working fine. Not even 24 hours after install I had a younger buck on it, and I’ve also had a doe with triplets hitting it as well as a big nontypical whose match set I found back in early March! He looks very similar to your “freak show” buck from last season. And just like you said I get maybe 3-4 different days of pics of the mature bucks hitting these spots in the summer just to let me know they will be back in the fall. October 1 can’t get here soon enough!

Yes, it kind of shocked me when I watched one of the latest episodes of Midwest Whitetail using your mock scrape design. At my age ive become doubtful about everything but I have to say this works. I started using it 2 or 3 years ago after watching one of your videos and have gotten 3 times more pictures on my trail cameras. Makes you wonder how many deer are actually there that you dont know about because they traveled around or behind the camera. Your Mock scrape vine will help you get photos of more deer.

I discovered a great primary scrape back in the woods on my property last year. The licking branch is just atarting to get a bit too high for most deer so I added a vine to it the other day and put a camera on it. I can't wait to pull the card in a couple months.

I used this on my property and it immediately turned into a deer hot spot in the first year I went from hardly seeing deer to now knowing where they will be. The best advice and cheapest thing ever if you can't do food or anything find a heavy trail hang a vine let nature do the rest thanks Jeff!!

I put out a licking branch for the very first time two weeks ago. Went and got the card from the camera. I'm in the eastern U.P. with low deer numbers. Well, not only deer on the camera, but a bear put his nose to it! He seemed to be going somewhere, but paused and smelled the stick!

These things are insane!! Hung one a month ago- deer, bear, coyotes, skunks, coons, rabbits, squirrels all come in to it, whether they are deer and bear on the hanging branch, or the others to the dirt. Its unbelievable- like social media of nature! Northern Wisconsin.

Jeff, I tried Striped Maple branch. It's what they rub on locally here in Central NY. Its been used often but I found they like the Vine licking branch's I've up better. Great advice, keep it coming.

If I have one in a windy spot I will take a piece of chain( I did rust the chain to take the shine off) and weave 510 cord through it so its above the stick but but the stick is still tied on with the cord and it considerably decreases the swing and adds some resistance to the stick which the bucks seem to love

Hi Wes! I've found getting the camera more at about 10 to 12' away and then using a long vine like the one we have helps greatly. This spot is fully exposed to a lot of wind up high from the West and we have no false trips in over a week. Great ideas too!!

Been using these and whittled down branches for more than 50 years now. They do work for sure. The area I hunt is is very windy so camera placement is important unless you want thousands of pics of a blowing vine, rope or limb without any deer in the picture or video,

We hunt in a very windy area...ridegtop SE MN...but we avoid getting blank pics pretty easily with a few different steps. 1. Using a quality trail cam 2. All vertical branches or vines should be a minimum of 5' long and in wind-exposed areas I recommend 7'+. The good thing is, longer is always more natural and will receive greater attention. 3. The vine or branch should be 3/4" to 1" in diameter...no greater and while less will receive attention if not too small, a smaller branch or stick will be too light and blow around much more. 4. The camera should be at 12 to 15' from the scrape, instead of under 10'. 5. Cut unnecessary branches from alimb you are hanging the scrape under, so the branch itself isn't catching more wind and blowing around. 6. Use a solid tree or tight line between 2 solid trees so the tree itself isn't blowing around. 7. Never use rope, ribbon and other fads that are too light and unnatural to deer in the first place. Practicing those 7 strategies will reduce and most of the time will completely eliminate false triggers.

Yes it is fun,I thought putting it out this late just 17 days before the season opener it would be detrimental to deer traffic in the area I put it but it's the complete opposite of what I thought.also I'm 62 years old and it just goes to show you're never to old to learn something new.thanks again Jeff!!!

Hey Jeff appreciate all the info!! This is my third season with no luck getting any deer to hit the vine same length no scent ect.. as I’m on a lease I’m restricted to only my couple stands to work with. Thick cypress swamps with white oaks and pines in north Florida. Don’t know if there are to many active scrapes close by already or possibly to close? Tried multiple areas spread out on the right trails but seems like the bucks like there historic same natural scrap spots Andy advice on to get one active I’d appreciate.

I did 2 mock scrapes on my 5 acres. Havent had any deer on my cams touching them. Made them exactly the way in the videos. Not sure if its just lack of bucks in the area or the landscape of my property. Maybe once pre rut starts more movement will get them there to see them? There are does coming through just no luck as of now.

Hey! Could you make a video on how to pick a good healthy tree for stand? This is my first year i plan on hunting from a stand. However, the tree’s look sketchy in my hunting spots. Been looking everywhere but can’t find a single video that goes over if a how to determine if a tree is healthy for a stand or not.

I did this exactly and the deer do not pay any attention to it. They will feed in the plot and walk right by it. Every once in awhile sniffing it. What else can I do to increase my chances? From my experience a field edge scrape can be a good tool for buck inventory (they get hammered at night). You can then use that coupled with other vine scrapes to help develop a movement pattern through the property

Hi Cloud! Flat ground, 5 to 7' hanging vine or branch, directly over the trail, around 3/4" to 1" in diameter and waist to belly high and they should hit it very fast...but eventually all the time 👍😊

Most rubs I find are on cedar trees, so I use cedar branches and peel off the bark at the end, hoping that scent will lure too since they seem to like the cedar so much.
