In 1979, I was a summer Rotary exchange student to Finland. My Finnish family took me on a driving tour of Finland. What a beautiful country! We went to Lapland. I loved Rovanemi. I enjoyed eating reindeer. Initially it was hard for me to get over the idea of it. I kept thinking of Rudolph. My Finnish father got quite a chuckle over that.

In Norway only Sami can own raindeer. Male loose antlers after mating in November. Female and yearling keep there antlers true winter = have a advantage when compete over food when their next year calf grow in their belly.

That is a great question. We asked that with the dogs, but not sure about the reindeer. My guess is no as they are allowed to roam way outside the fence for long periods for time.
@mikrokupu4 жыл бұрын
No, usually the reindeers are not named. Sometimes a baby reindeer become a bottle baby if rejected by the mother and found soon enough. You meet these guys in Lapland sometimes, they don't know how to be a proper reindeer, they are more like dogs with horns :) Meet Aatu the orphan reindeer who prefers the human company: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH-9koVmr5KehdU

Some male raindeer is made not so manly anymore = can't be father = don't use energy to prove who's have mating rights = grow really big. In the winter with lots of snow, it is these raindeer that showel snow for food, weaker raindeer eat the leftover's = keep their belly going to better food is available.
@TheUglyGnome5 жыл бұрын
You seem to know something about this topic. Can you confirm that the traditional way Sami people used to "make males not so manly" was by biting their ... eh ... sensitive parts? That's what I was taught in school.
