The one book of Wilkie Collins that I read in the 1980s, which I love, and no one talks about is The Black Robe. How crazy is that? Soar high Jenny, I love your videos, such an intelligence, amazing young woman.

Loved this breakdown! As someone who has never read Wilkie Collins, I always am debating what to start with. I felt like this video is a great overview of many of the books.

Hear! Hear! The Woman in White is so fantastic, thrilling, and suspenseful. Yes, the Villains! Count O is such a low- key , sophisticated, eccentric character. No Name is beside me now; I'll go with your rec.

Wilkie Collins is one of my favourite Victorian authors. I have read The Woman in White and The Moonstone when I was a teenager and really loved them at the time. I am scheduling in a reread of these novels. I have since read No Name, Jezebel's Daughter, and am currently reading The Dead Secret. I want to read The Law and the Lady, Man and Wife, and Armadale.

I live Wilkie! He's so good at intertwining plot and character. When I heard he had collaborated with Dickens I thought he was famous mostly for that reason. I was happy this turned out not to be the case and that he is a great writer on his own merits.

Willie Collins is ( or was ! ) a terrific writer .One of the greatest of the Victorian era and thankfully ( in my opinion ) free of the suffocating sentimentality of Dickens . Yes, I know and admire Dickens and freely admit his genius but like eating chocolate eclairs ; one is very enjoyable but try three in a row ??? Collins is witty , sardonic and his female characters more interesting than Dickens ? And , of course , his private life was ' interesting " to say the least....🤔 !

Perfect timing, I just finished my first Collins, The Woman in White, a few minutes ago! I found it to be surprisingly humorous (mainly Count Fosco and Mr Fairlie). Great characters and an enjoyable plot. Now I know which ones of his to pick up next.

I have read Woman in White,The Moonstone and Man and Wife. For me I think Man and Wife is my favorite so far, but I can't wait to read more of his novels especially No Name!

This is so helpful! I had a goal to read my first Wilkie Collins this year but it hasn't happened yet. I am making it a goal for 2024. I was going to start with The Moonstone because it's the only one I own but now I'm rethinking that. I may start with The Woman in White.

Loved this! I always appreciate your thoughts on his works since we seem to like similar ones. I’ve only read 8 so far but would like to finish the rest. They’re really hard to rank, but currently it would be The Woman in White, No Name, Man and Wife, Armadale, The Moonstone, The Law and the Lady, Jezebel’s Daughter, and Poor Miss Finch as my least favorite. My two favorite and my least favorite are generally the same, but all of the others in the middle change order depending on my mood. 😅 You’ve inspired me to try Basil next!

Yes if someone doesn’t love the Woman in White I wouldn’t think his others would be loved. I just read 12 of his short stories this month- most of them I really liked though a couple of them were ho hum. Agree with you if he developed them more would have been better.

I really enjoyed The Haunted Hotel. There's a moment in it that genuinely scared me (and my mom, too, when she read it), and I overall found it pretty satisfying, even though it's not one of his best. And it's set in Venice! I think you'll enjoy it. And if I Say No is one you haven't heard anything about, my library randomly has it, and I read it earlier this year. It's one of his later books, and you can kind of tell his health was struggling and he'd lost a bit of his spark, but I didn't hate it. It's just very trope-y.

Great video! I've read a lot of novels at this point, too, and pretty much agree on each of your assessments. Hide and Seek, especially that ending, was bad. The Dead Secret had some enjoyable moments and characters, but it was so predictable it was almost pointless reading it. One of his later books that I highly recommend is The Fallen Leaves. While not up there with his big four, it was surprisingly good and touched on social issues. I'm currently reading The Haunted Hotel and I'm only finishing so I can say for certain its the worst of his books. Even worse than Hide and Seek. 😅

I now have 13 Wikie Collins books....having read 3 of them so far and the next one in my TBR is No Name. The Woman in White is my favourite ;Moonstone let me down a bit, but not as badly as Poor Miss Finch ! The trouble is having read TWiW first o ne expects great things. So, I am a bit reluctant to stick to my list and read No Name next ? Em, I hate changing my !ist. Anyway, onwards and upwards 🙂 Kind regards.

I'll be interested in what you think about Man and Wife as compared to what you think is your favorite now. I was the lone dissent among the group who read this. I liked bits and pieces of it and disliked some of it. I ended up giving it 3.5 stars which a 4 for me means "this is great, you need to read it!". So 3.5 was just above "it was fine/good". But most others loved it and called it "page turning". I did not. 😅
