4:45 this ending doesnt really make sense since the USSR got what it wanted from Finland in the Winter War which was to move the border further from Leningrad so Germany wouldnt invade the USSR through Finland like it ended up doing in operation Barbarossa so Finland staying neutral would have been the best option for them since If they tried to invade that would make Finland join the Axis anyway. Also a bit of a nitpick but the USSR achieved total victory in the Winter War even though the Finnish workers didnt overthrow the Finnish government like the USSR hoped they would since Finland surrendered and accepted the demands of the USSR. Also also the ending at 9:39 would have still happened if Germany lost WW1 but managed to stop the German revolution from overthrowing the Monarchy. Otherwise good video

Moving the border away was one of the two goals the USSR had in the Winter War, the other was to puppet Finland. The Finnish Democratic Republic was declared in Terijoki on the second day of the war, but the Soviets failed to subordinate Finland and thus it never came into existence properly. So no, they did not win totally either. The war was one of the biggest embarrassments ever for the USSR and it revealed their weaknesses to the world. Because his original plan had failed, Stalin gave up on the idea of a puppet Finland and pushed for maximum territorial gains instead. After the war, he established the Karelo-Finnish SSR within the USSR, with the purpose of justifying a later annexation of Finland. The mere existence of the K-FSSR is concrete proof of what the Soviets were planning for Finland. Also, the core idea of having a German prince become King of Finland was to gain valuable closer relations with Germany, which seemed to become the dominator of Europe. But this of course did not happen. In fact, Frederick Charles himself renounced the Finnish throne.

@@cattitan 1. The goal of the Terijoki government was to act as the government of Finland in the case that the working class of Finland overthrew the government like the Soviets hoped they would. The reason they belived this was because they had poor intelligence on the situation in Finland through the 20s and 30s. They belived that since the workers already tried carrying out a revolution in 1918 with popular support they would do so again if the possibility arose. When it became clear that that wouldnt happen and once the Soviets got to the point in the war where Finland accepted their demands they dissolved the Terijoki government and added the territory that it controlled together with the Karelian Autonomous SSR to form the K-FSSR. They obviously hoped that in the future Finland would have a revolution and that they could add it to the K-FSSR but this wasnt their main goal in either the Winter War or Continuation War and the plan was never to occupy Finland just force them to surrender and submit to their demands. Also the Winter War wasnt really an embarrasment for the USSR since they mostly used their worst soldiers and commanders (this is even a thing that the Soviet Union is condemned for in the Finnish narrative of the war where "The Russians sent 18 yo Ukrainians to die in Finland") and Finland had a massive geographical advantage which was the reason they could stop the Red Army even if it was for only 3 months. The USSR also only had around 750k soldiers in the Winter War against Finlands 350k so the man advantage while significant wasnt overwhelming especially taking into account the geography of Finland contradicting the "Talvisodan Ihme" (The Miracle of the Winter War) narrative that was common in Finnish postwar propaganda and is nowhere close to the popular Finnish saying of "Yksi suomalainen vastaa kymmentä ryssää" (1 Finn is equal to 10 Russians) that is often used referring to the war (even though it does predate it). Also the war didnt "reveal the USSRs weaknesses to the world" but rather gave a false impression to the Axis powers that the Soviet Union was militarily weak which was a major contributor to them starting their invasion of it early. 2. The original plan of the USSR was to offer Finland a mutual assistance pact and once Finland rejected that their plan was to move the Finnish border further from Leningrad and give Finland a part of Karelia that was twice the size of the area Finland would have to give up. Once the negotiations failed after the Soviets had given Finland an even better deal which they didnt take because they were hostile to the Soviet government and had been promised by Britain and the other allies that they would help Finland get what they want from the Soviet Union if they didnt accept their deal (like they already did in the Russian Civil War) the USSRs goal became forcing Finland into moving their border militarily. You say that Stalins goal became "maximum territorial gains" which is just false since there was a faction in the Soviet leadership (especially in the Red Army command) that wanted to occupy the entirety of Finland and the Communist Party with Stalin as their leader were the ones that opposed this and advocated for a peace treaty. If Stalin really wanted "maximum territorial gains" he would have occupied the entirety of Finland like the Red Army command wanted him to especially since this was after the Soviets had already broken the Finnish defenses in February. I already talked about the K-FSSR in the previous section but in short they did want Finland to eventually join the USSR after a new Finnish revolution but this wasnt their goal in either of the wars and its existence is in now way "concrete proof" that the USSR tried to annex Finland in the Winter War. 3. The reason Finland was going to have a German prince was because Finland would have become a protectorate of the German Empire which the White government had promised to Germany in exchange for invading Finland in the Finnish Civil War which was the deciding factor in the Whites winning the war the second being the highly trained soldiers called Jaegers that Germany had accepted to train in 1914 in the hope that they could return to Finland when the time was right and help make it a part of the German instead of the Russian empire (even though in their propaganda they claimed it was to help with Finnish independence). The reason this didnt happen was the German Revolution that destroyed the German Empire and therefore made it impossible for Finland to join it. Frederick Charles didnt abdicate the throne out of his own choice but because he was forced to due to the German Empire crumbling (The emperor Wilhelm II had already abdicated the throne a month prior to this) and the Finnish elite needing another protector which they eventually found in the form of the entente.

@@jeba6549 Stalin was well aware of the political situation in Finland and did not believe that a revolution would spark. The failed uprising in 1918 was a result of Lenin persuading the Finnish Reds to rise up and promising them everything they could've wanted. Of course, even Lenin's plan was to first let Finland go, then have it turn communist and have it come back to Russia. The Winter War ended most pro-Soviet sentiment in Finland anyway and united the country against the aggressor. The failure of the USSR in the Winter War was a direct result of Stalin's purges and other poor choices. Stalin started approaching Finland with a peace when he got concerned that the Allies would intertwine in the war and took what he could. At the time, the USSR was undergoing a massive anti-Finnish sentiment. Ingria had been emptied of Finns and the government of the Karelian ASSR had been executed. The Finnish Operation of the NKVD and the Genocide of the Ingrian Finns were stopped for the duration of the war merely to find personnel for the armed forces of the Finnish Democratic Republic. Even this proved to be a failure. The planned amount of soldiers was 80 000, but even though the Soviets took everyone they could and even put ethnic Russians in there, the total amount only came to 22 500. The trade proposed by Stalin was a total scam if you know anything about it. Sure, Finland would've benefited from it when it came to land area, but otherwise there were just negatives. Stalin wanted to take away prosperous parishes on the Karelian Isthmus, the strategically important Gulf of Finland islands and the equally critical port town of Hanko. On top of this, they ordered Finnish Karelia to be cleared of any defenses. In return Finland would've gotten two large but rural parishes from East Karelia, Repola and Porajärvi. Remember what happened to the Baltics after they accepted Soviet demands? Had Finland accepted the demands too, the outcome would've been the same. The country was still listed as belonging to the USSR in the Molotov-Ribbentrop-pact. There was no "even better deal" proposed to Finland. A larger, still rural area from East Karelia was only promised to the Finnish Democratic Republic in exchange for even more valuable land on the Isthmus, as dictated by the Treaty of Friendship and Mutual Assistance on 2.12.1939. Also, if you even read what I originally said, you'd know that the USSR didn't want to annex Finland during the Winter War, only after it. The Karelo-Finnish SSR was by itself conflicted with the 1936 Soviet Constitution, more specifically with the criteria regarding SSRs that was outlined by Stalin himself, however on terms that would've only been resolved had Finland been incorporated to the K-FSSR. Otherwise, it had no reason to exist and thus was dissolved in 1956.
