We really can’t say they were gay tho. They didn’t look at sex or sexuality the same way we do. In Athens way back then men of means had a wife, and they did have sex with her. But they viewed the sex as only being for the purpose of creating children. Sex for pleasure was usually something they did with younger men they were mentoring. And they still thought of anal sex as something shameful for the receptive partner. And who knows how all of this worked for poor people? Anyway my point is that you can’t attach the word “gay” to them because sexual orientation really is a modern concept that didn’t exist before the 19th century.

The erasure of gay relationships from history is infuriating. People hold claims of homosexuality in history to a burden of evidence no one requires for straight relationships. Nobody has a problem saying that man and a woman who never get married but who live together and write each other love letters were lovers. But when it comes to people being gay it's all "we'll never know", "it's all just speculation", "we shouldn't read anything into these words".
@Laecy4 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, Bayesian reasoning requires a higher standard of proof for more improbable claims, and statistically gay people are less numerous in the general population than straight people. BUT That’s the general population, and not the appropriate prior to select for this situation. The appropriate population for comparison is “pairs of people who behave romantically toward one another” - in which platonic friends are much less common than homosexual couples.

Am I the only one who thinks of the instances where the person who needs convincing is one of the women?
@Wasp2394 жыл бұрын
They yell "gay" in a bad way. Because it's kind of 'bad' or at least not normal when two men show tenderness to each other. In society it's almost forbidden, when for women such behavior is considered as normal. I see more homophobia towards men here.

historians like to claim chopin's letters "were not homoerotic in his native polish language". well i'm polish, i read the letters in their original form, and i can confirm they are gay as FUCK. you're welcome. EDIT: Thanks for the likes, ya'll! I actually translated some of my favourite lines from his letters for myself and my friends when I was reading them, so here they are for those of you who asked! These are all in letters addressed to other men! (mainly to Titus tho) - "I know you don't like to be kissed, but I wish you would let me kiss you right now" and "'right on your lips, will you let me?" - "And how sad it is to not have someone to go to in the mornings, share with him my sadness, joy; how wicked it is when something is so heavy, and I have nowhere to put it. You know what I'm alluding to." - "If you could write even just two words back to me, it will make me happy for weeks. And forgive me that I have sent you a waltz, which might make you angry with me, but know I wanted to please you with it, because I am madly in love with you." - "You're asking for my portrait - if only I could steal one from Queen Elise and send it to you! [...] And afterwards believe me, I am always beside you, I do not step away from you and so it will be unto death, I am your most devoted F. Ch." - "I don't want to write you anymore news, I just want to fondle you." - "My dearest life! I have never missed you like how I do now; I have no-one to pour my heart out to, I don't have you. One look from you after my concerts meant more to me than all the praises from the newspapers and aristocrats." - "How blissful it will be for me, to receive your letter and truly ensure that you love me, or at least look at the hand and writing of the only one whom I can love!" - "So write to me of when you will arrive in Warsaw, because I would be even more heart-broken than the first time, to play the main act without you. No, you don't know, don't know just how much I love you, so much I cannot possibly prove it to you - and I've been wanting for so long for you to know. Ah, if I could just hold your hand, what I would give, you couldn't guess... half of my wretched life." - "I beg of you - love me."

This reminds me of a gag that I thought after I heard that one of the dudes in the new "beauty and the beast" remake was gay (despite the fact that he being gay had no impact on the story or the plot and no one knew until someone that worked on the movie said it) The gag would basically go like this Gaston: calls gay dude Gay dude: what is it sir Gaston: remember when you told me about your new idea... what was it called? Gd: homosexuality(slowly) Gaston: exactly, well when you told me about it I was baffled, shocked, I couldn't understand it for the life of me but than I took one of mine hourly looks at the mirror and realized that a man's body couldn't possibly be only adored by women, there is simply too much to love Gd: specially in your case sir The rest of the gag would be he explains sexualities to gaston and his reactions That probably wouldn't have worked in the movie and no one at Disney would let it exist for more than a second but I liked it

I find it sad, that my great Aunt never felt comfortable coming out even within the family. Even when she ran into my Mom in SF holding hands with another woman. My Mom didn't care, she was just so excited to see her Aunt. The Aunt acted as if she didn't know my mom, so my mom never brought it up again. The thing was the whole family knew she was gay and nobody cared they just loved her the way she was. But born in the early 1900's I am sure coming out to even family was even scary. When i was like 12 or 13, I went to the doctors and the Dr said "do you have a boyfriend?" and i was so confused as to why that was a medical question. I sort of nervously said "no...?" because i wasn't sure if he was joking. It was years later when i realised that he was trying to ask me if i was sexually active. I had a girlfriend at the time, so you can see how misleading that question is. Kinda dangerous? I'm a trans dude and this is was before i knew

Yeah, that's a really bad way of asking someone if they're sexually active. Someone could have a boyfriend and not be sexually active, someone could not have a boyfriend and be sexually active, and they need to acknowledge non-cis and non-straight people as well, even from a medical standpoint (pregnancy risk, for one). It's much better to be direct about that sort of question

OMG, one of my favorite YT creator bringing up one of my fav web comics. Foxes in love is so cute. And yes, I instantly read that particular comic as them being gay (especially the "called it") but I saw the people trying to make it straight and it's always adorable and disheartening at the same time.

My dear grandmother was always blissfully unaware of my same-sex relationship, even though she visited us multiple times over the course of our five-year relationship and clearly saw we only had one bed. Bless her heart.

As a historian going through school just recently we were always trying to find the gays. One great teacher I had was like, "seriously, how can you not see they were LGBT?" We are even looking at people who may have been trans in the past. Many people would hide as the other gender or occasionally dress as the other gender. Not saying that they just didn't want to were whatever, cause why not but we are trying to be more open-minded and really look with new eyes. P.S. I forgot to say that I love your videos they are so informative and I have been introducing my friends to them. Keep up the amazing work!
