Re: "How is it possible for a woman to have a wife?" When I was a kid, my dad's best friends were a lesbian couple. (One of them gave me my first microscope!) When I was about four or five, I asked who their husbands were. My dad explained that they didn't have husbands, they loved each other-- like, holding hands love. They wanted to get married. I was very confused-- "But which one's gonna wear the tuxedo?" Big concern, that. "I bet it's [N]," I continued, "because she's taller." That made it all make sense. So long as someone wore the tuxedo, it was all good.

And the greek myths we do get taught have the gay parts conveniently omitted. We learn about Achilles, but never hear a word about him and Patroclus and how megagay they were.
@lampekartoffel2 жыл бұрын
This part has always baffled me. Did you seriously never learn that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers? Cause there sure as heck weren't anyone hiding that from me or my classmates and while there definitely was a bigger focus on the cishet Greek myths, we were also taught about the spartan army's encouragement of the soldiers having sex to strengthen their bonds and give their all for their fellow soldiers. We were also taught about the origin myth of how love started - which also explains why some feel same sex attraction. I can't imagine how you could even be taught about ancient Greece without learning about at least the M|M stories...
@isabellecasier57022 жыл бұрын
I was taught that in the greek ancient times couples where promecious and gay was openly displayed as normal. A whole island has been dedicated to greek mytholigy and the gay experience. Leonardi da Vinci was gay or bi, not mutch confirmed because he lived in a strict catholic era and as sculptur and painter he lived off the commissions of the church. There is a reason why we still debate if the Mona Lisa is a female or male. On the other hand my classmate who was gay was throw out of the house with 1 bag of clothes when he came out of the closet ('80) luckely he had a sister and stellar classmates who copied their books and transcript for him so he could resume school in a wimp (thanks to the school lending the office copiermachine). But I was educated in Europe, we do tent to go by the ment "If it does not hurts me, let it be"

Not gay erasure, but trans erasure. So I have a couple of trans friends, and being a young trans middle-schooler I get it. One night we were talking about this guy on my softball team and my mom and I used “she/her” pronouns (I did it because I wanted to make sure he was safe, I’m sorry). This friend is pretty openly trans through his grade despite his dad being super phobic, and my brother knew he was trans, so he decided to say “She’s not a girl, she’s a trans guy.”. I’m not sure if he was trying to start something or he just didn’t understand the danger of saying that bc he’s pretty phobic too, but my mom totally went off, saying, “She’s not a guy, she’s just confused.”. I got super mad and left the table without saying anything, and I feel super bad for my friend. Guess I’m not coming out anytime soon.

"Guess I’m not coming out anytime soon." I feel you. When I was 16 I thought I was straight, but I overheard my dad at a reunion tell my uncle how relieved he was the first time I brought a boy home. I was like "what the deuce? my dad wouldn't be ok with me being gay?" My parents were always so openly supportive of others but couldn't fathom their own children being gay? It's no wonder I didn't even come out to myself until I was 36. I never formally came out to my family, I just sort of fell in love and got married. It wasn't a secret by then, tho. My mom didn't get it until the very end of her life but I had to go out of my way to tell her. I thought making the family drive 3 hours across state lines to attend my big lesbian wedding by the sea where it was legal was enough of a clue that I was gay, but nope. I married a trans woman who my mother proceeded to consistently misgender for 5 years, despite constant reminders. It was infuriating. Eventually I got fed up and was like "Mom, you know I'm gay, right?" I realized that might have been part of the problem. The whole family knew, but she was shocked. "NO!" Yes mom, I'm gay. I married a woman. Every time she misgendered my wife, it disrespected us both. I'm glad I came out to her that day because she died less than a month later. It probably would have bugged me my entire life. At least on that front I got some closure. And, thankfully, my dad has always been super loving and supportive, so my fears over his comment were unfounded. He would have been ok with it the whole time. He just saw it wayyyyyy before I did and didn't know how to handle it at the time. I'll always regret not coming out as a teenager. It might not have been as accepted at the time, but turns out most of my friends were also lesbians, we just never talked about it. Life would have been different. Maybe I could have dated some of my crushes. Who knows!

Lana says something along the lines of "that must have been why Mia was so attracted to me" and her younger sister, Emma, quickly chimes in to say "intellectually attracted!". This has become somewhat of a meme in the Ace Attorney fandom due to the implication of Emma pulling an r/sapphoandherfriend on her sister

Ok but like I hate it when people out of school assume that we still aren’t taught about stuff. Cuz in my state, we learned about queer people in literature, we had queer sex-Ed,and we just learned about intersex people. I know that it’s like this in very few places, but they say “it’s not” like it’s not at all happening.
@schokoloko20922 жыл бұрын
Well damn, you lucky. Which state do you live in? Or maybe it depends on the school or teacher..
@TheoRae82892 жыл бұрын
That's a very recent development and your area may be in a minority. Because all of those literature things I heard about from social media more than a decade after I left school, with the sole exception of Dickinson, and even then my teacher tried to say she was asexual. Hell, they GOT RID OF SEX ED at my school my freshman year. This is why I'm learning to be a sex educator.

Ugh. My girlfriend works in child care. One day at her work a couple of little 5 year old girls declared they were going to marry each other when they grow up. My girlfriend's idiot boss just had to open up her mouth and tell them that two girls can't get married, only girls and boys can... Not only is that factually untrue as same sex marriage is legal here, but there's a married openly gay man on staff. She was the freaking one who hired him. It pissed off one of the other employees so much that she gave a blistering lecture to her own boss about not saying crap like.

Started reading Simon Cowells book ‘My Wild Life’ and he explained that, as a kid, he lived on a road with many of his school teachers, and one of these nice lady’s lived with her ‘female companion’ with many animals, no kids, just the two of them, in the 50s/60s and he didn’t twig until writing about it recently that they probably weren’t ‘just friends’ 😂😂

I once saw someone complain that two ppl of the same sex can't be friends anymore because it's all gay now and I was just.... baffled because what happened to all those years of me having male friends, being asked if we're together or if I like them and my mom still thinking my relationship with my partner was a phase after two years of us being together (she doesn't say anything now so I think she got it)

Some straight people are so fragile that that think that people occasionally assuming their same gender friend is their partner suddenly means they simply CANNOT be friends with the same gender anymore.

As an aro-ace who experiences 0 romantic and sexual attraction, i also agree that gay and bi erasure is really annoying. My family very easily assume that as soon as im close to a male friend then something is going on, it's annoying because it makes it seem like i'll not be enough until having a loving partner but also because they dont do the same with my female friends that im actually more close to. Bruh, I have already said i dont care about gender. You're missing the point in multiple ways

whenever I see/hear stuff about LGBT erasure, I just think of the song 'History Hates Lovers' and specifically the chorus 'historians will call them close friends, besties, roommates, colleagues anything but lovers' and then when I hear the word 'roommates' in the song I instantly think of the vine 'and they were roommates'

3:03 confused me because the album pictures shown appeared to be of just one bride with two different bridesmaids (based on the matching pink dresses and smaller bouquets of the two other women pictured). I kept wondering if I was missing something. It took me several times watching back to realize both brides are happily featured in the profile picture. 🤦♀

I remember the surprise I felt when I learned that Abraham Lincoln had two great loves of his life, both men. And that he and his wife possibly married for convince, supportive evidence being that he literally shared his bedroom with another man while she had her own room while they were married at living in the white house. Like why didn't they teach us that in school instead of beating us over the head with the fact that he married Mary and they had a son. What about the man he had to be put on suicide watch over when the guy left him?

Fun fact: in addition to Michelangelo and Leonardo (da Vinci), Donatello was also probably gay. Raphael was probably straight, but this still means 75% of the turtles were LGBTQ+. 🐢🐢🐢🏳🌈

The one at 5:00 was in reference to chapter 5 of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. Personally, I think it's supposed to show that Ema is being young and naive about her sister's feelings. I think the worst erasure is when the second game was translated to anime and they turned the lesbian couple into sisters.
@brynnsparrow84762 жыл бұрын

What's extra frustrating about the archeological discoveries is that somehow two people comforting each other when they're about to die just HAS to be romantic, EXCEPT when they're both "the same gender". Like, can we just not calling these finds "the lovers"? 'Cause we don't actually know they were "in love". It's just two humans holding each other as they die.
@fancytreeshrew Жыл бұрын
“is two guys cuddling gay?” And “is two girls cuddling gay?” You know, this is very far fetched, and I may be wrong, but *maybe* it depends on if they are gay or not? Shocking, I know.

The meme about various historical erasures is bittersweet. So many people's truths who influenced our science and art *to this day* have been ignored or altered for the sake of straight bullshittery. However it's very empowering as an lgbtqia+ club member to know of the many famous queer figures and their achievements and feel that we can do great things.
@aaronjafri90042 жыл бұрын
Ah, the whole "Intellectually Attracted" bit from the first Ace Attorney game. Love seeing takes as to how Ema did not realize how very gay her sister was. That series is actually very queer, but only like one or two characters were actually meant to be.
