Couldn’t agree more. I look at the picking hand like how one would hold a pencil. Whichever grip works best for you and helps you write, go for it.

I think its good practice to curl your fingers in if you are NOT comfortable with it already. With the fingers curled in, it helped me to learn hybrid picking by already having my fingers in position. When anchoring now, I feel a bit limited. It depends on what I'm playing though. If you want to learn how to hybrid pick, better get use to curling. That's what I have found to be useful for me. Now I can do both. Not very well but, practice, practice, and more practice!

Something strange though, I never thought about if I would anchor or not. Until one day, I noticed my pinky fingerprint in the same general location. When I'm playing, i can never feel my pinky touch the guitar. Never have. New sub!

This is very interesting. I Used to Anchor but I felt like it was holding me back. To break that habit was like, relearning to the play guitar. Now this kind of makes me feel like knowing to do both is probably for the best. I definitely think at the end of the day it is what works best for you. I've seen some videos about Van Halen speed technique. I believe he has some weird claw looking technique. Which I guess at the end of the day, go to trying a lot of things. It never hurts to explore and find what works best for you.
