1:06:53 awww what a nice compliment from the vet... it's hard to be a vet or a farrier for a rescue, so nice that after all the hard stuff, in the midst of a hard conversatuon, he calls out the rescue as THE place to be, where the rescue will make the right calls, involve vets and diagnostics and opinions and consider the current and future quality of life or lack there of for the horse. How it should be but also good to hear that. Nice.

I was taking care of a 21-year-old Arabian mare while her owners were out of town. One evening when I went up to feed her, she was showing all the signs of colic. I walked her around for a few hours before calling the vet. The conclusion: She was a “surgical candidate.” Fortunately, I was able to get ahold of the owners, and they had the finances to approve surgery. The enterolith removed from her was the size of a grapefruit, and VERY smelly! Apparently Arabians fed alfalfa exclusively are prone to developing enteroliths.

I worked for an old horseman years ago, and he would always halter and lead rope, leaving it on. In a small area like your one is in. After a few days of being fed,watered, and time spent with every horse would have gotten used to all of that and also have learnt to pick their feet up when they stood on the rope, which in turn would mean they never broke reins if they stood on them. It worked an absolute treat😊

Too much risk of injury leaving them unsupervised. Lots of trainers do this, but only when they're nearby and can monitor how it's going and make sure they don't get tangled up and break a leg, etc.

@@WendyLemontree EXACTLY‼️ We NEVER leave ANY of our horses halters on‼️When we put them out to the pastures at night. Wayyy tooo manyyy things can go WRONG‼️IF it’s rescue horses we take in from OVERWHELMED rescues, & shelters, or owner surrendered horses…There have just been SOOOO MANYYYY HORSES THIS YEAR OUT HERE‼️IT’S BEEN ABSOLUTELY NUTS‼️BUT, IF we have trouble catching some of the horses? We ALWAYS REMOVE ALL HALTERS B4 TURNING THEM HORSES OUT…It’s SAFER that way‼️ We’ve seen our share of what happens when you DON’T‼️We have a couple small pastures we put the incoming horses in for intake…they…that’s NOWHERE NEAR ANY of “OUR HORSES”. We also have 2 small quarantine pastures separated …& 1 bigger one which is ‘stage 2’, as they work their way up the ladder of being “GOOD TO GO”. If we don’t take in the horses from our local rescues, shelters or owner surrenders?? They’d have to turn them away…& THAT CANNOT HAPPEN‼️CUZ WE KNOW where they’ll end up going😞🥺😢. When we hear of upcoming auctions? We INTERCEPT THEM ASAP‼️BUY AS MANY AS POSSIBLE‼️There’s more shady stuff that goes on with these horse auctions than a lot of people know about…& it’s DISGUSTING, & DISTURBING‼️ ONE THING THAT WE FEEL, IS THAT EVERYONE…E V E R Y O N E SHOULD SEE…& THAT IS TO WATCH EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS TO THE HORSES WHO DON’T GET SAVED…CUZ AS MUCH AS WE WANT TO?? WE CAN’T SAVE THEM ALL…YET‼️ But, I get a distinct feeling that MOST people DON’T KNOW or REALIZE what absolute HORROR, & TERROR THESE BEAUTIFUL, LOVING ANIMALS GO THROUGH FROM THE JAM PACKED TRAILERS OF SCARED, HORRIBLY INJURED, EVERYTHING UP TO THE TIME OF THEIR DEATH. IT’S NOTHING LIKE THE QUICK, PAINLESS DEATH CATTLE DO. HORSES are DIFFERENT. Search YT, THERE’S VIDEOS OF THE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES…BUT, YOU HAVE TO SEE IT TO UNDERSTAND THE URGENCY OF GETTING THAT DONE IN D.C.‼️‼️ PLRASE HELP?! DONATE‼️ THESE RESCUES, SHELTERS ETC. NEED YOUR CONTINUED HELP UNTIL IT BECOMES “ILLEGAL TO TAKE THESE HORSES TO MEXICO & CANADA”‼️STOP HORSES FROM BEING SLAUGHTERED‼️

Praying Lexi comes through this colic. It's always scary as so many things can be the root cause. I've had one that was impacted and came through it, but had another impaction that ended up being a tumor strangulating the bowel causing it and at 30 years old with other issues we decided to let her go.

For haltering I do it always like with the rope halter. My horses don´t like being touched at the ears. To get the halter on I establish "down" first. The horse should lower its head at "down" and touch at the poll. Later when haltering I say "down" and touch the poll with the neck band. The same with getting on a bridle. This way I can halter or bridle a tall horse easily as the horse helps.
1:03:29 i wonder if they would have any interest in doing a shelter transfer for that horse with the refilling abcess to HPHS? With their surgical suite or... not, because she is an aging lady?
@LouiseStastny2 ай бұрын
Because it's over 800 miles from here...there are great vets in WI. Bad owners are why these horses are mostly here. These horses should have been trained and treated instead of dumped at the auctions.
@PurdueAlum012 ай бұрын
It seems more likely to get a transport and maybe also they can visit to check out the gentling program or be there for a round of boot camp mentoring or whatever they have going on, see the expansions. While there are good vets their's already said he probably wouldn't take it on with the complexities in the area and no surgical suite. Couldn't trust her to be adopted as is that thing would fill up again and leave her where she started or worse. As usual it's up to these guys to fix it or let her move on. Seems transport might be cheaper then finding and paying for a willing vet, but that's only if HPHS vets could manage that surgery, might take a university visit and she might not be up for that. Like they said maybe her old lady status trumps the medical care anyway...
@PonyTalesRefuge2 ай бұрын
At her age, she really is not a surgical candidate. In addition, she is extremely bonded to another elderly mini that she came in with. To separate them at this point would not be in the best interest of either one of them.

I am guessing that the program is so new that they don’t know, yet. Now that the first two are returning home and can talk to others about their experience, it may encourage other Navajos to want to sign up. I am not clear on what the shelters have to provide. Obviously they provide horses and working areas and tack/equipment, but do they have to have housing or anything else? Do they pay or does the program pay the gentlers? The shelters are probably asking these questions and more, too.
