I love Greatest Hits and constantly praise them. Since I decided to limit my collection I do a lot of greatest hits. I may get a few albums from an artist but rarely will I try to be a completist anymore. I like the hits!

Hey there, Steve. This makes so much sense. A good first step toward purging records one only listens to for 1 to 3 songs. One must admit that Bowie’s greatest hits of 20 songs actually qualify as great songs. The same goes for the Stones. ✌🏽

Yeah, I couldn't agree more with your assessment on the greatest hits collections of many of those bands you mentioned. I pretty much have most of those CDs you displayed and if I want to condense my listening pleasure to the hits, I do. Aerosmith, Elton John and most 70s bands to me are greatest hits only. That Rolling Stones and David Bowie two CD disc cover a lot of turf and would do the casual listener just fine. No problem with that. I do the same things with other bands as well. Nice one!

Hi Steve - Definitely agree with many of the 80's picks & even Bowie & The Stones stopped making good records in the early 80's. Scary Monsters & Emotional Rescue the last good albums by both.

I'm with you on a lot of these. I do have the Bowie and Elton hits collections but I have a lot of their albums as well (the 70's for Elton). I think they miss a lot of songs that I like. The Stones? I don't know what to say as I have all of their albums. I will say that The Bangles debut is worth having and the hits collection can take care of the rest.
@STEVEHEROLD

i’ll have to keep eye out for Bangles debut since you’re second person to mention it. i know i know about Stones. i think part of it is not wanting to dive in. ive never been a big fan even a lotta those hits i never need to hear again. i’m sure if i sat and listened to their catalog i’d find some album tracks i like. just not that interested in diving in i guess. thanks for tuning in dude.

I love a good greatest hits collection. I'm going insist on Men At Work's first album. Run DMC - Please reconsider...🤔BOWIE - Those are fighting words! Elton has a great, very comprehensive CD box. To Be Continued... I could get away with only having 40 Licks; although I do love their early blues numbers.
@STEVEHEROLD

to be fair ive never heard men at work’s first album. thought has crossed my mind if i saw them to maybe pick them up if they were cheap. i knew Bowie would get most heat. Just never been that into his stuff beyond the hits. little surprised you are on board with the Stones for most part. thanks for tuning in mark.

Your risking the VC wrath with some of these Steve! I would only argue with The Bangles..their first album ‘All Over The Place’ is Rickenbacker Jangle pop heaven...& crucially still cheap on Vinyl. My pick would be Squeeze.

hahaha. that’s a risk i’m willing to take. up until a year ago squeeze woulda made this list fer sure. but i did find their album east side story at a flea market for $1 so gave it a shot and its really pretty good. but i def agree their hits are what’s best.

Love this topic - I'm with you on The Bangles. Thompson Twins, Altered Images, Mental As Anything, Flock Of Seagulls (I actually saw them live back then), Eddy Grant, Blink 182 (my kids love them), Run DMC I don't even own a comp and no plans to. I have two Men At Work comps and studio albums....not sure why. I have that Eddie Money hits CD, but his debut and some others are pretty good. I'm a big southern rock guy and 38 Special are pretty good, but not a favorite of mine. Greatest Hits for them is a good one. I have every Aerosmith album.....and I'm not sure why. I never listen to them. David Bowie.....ok.......ummmm......... yea....no. He's amongst the greatest. I have every album and listen to them. But that is a great greatest hits album - he has a ton of them. Elton John....those early classics are largely great. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road alone is essential. If you wanna stick to greatest hits - he has much better than those two. Rolling Stones - you're not kidding, I fell off my chair, broke my nose and went unconscious. Uhhh I'm speechless. But I'll never unsubscribe. I'm just depressed now. Heartbreaker is one of my favorites of all time too. You know I love Goats Head Soup, and I think its "underrated". It's a deep, mellow album - maybe you should try it....just to get Heartbreaker..... Great video as always. Now I'm going to a bar to get a drink because you don't like the Rolling Stones......40 Licks....uhhh. I listened to it twice and filed it away.

weird i was sure you were gonna insist i run out and buy the entire Run DMC catalog. I did kinda lie though sort of. I do own the first Hot Rocks by the Stones on CD. But I bought that recently for 99¢ at a Goodwill only cause it seemed crazy not to for that cheap. But I didn’t need it cause everything on that is on 40 Licks except maybe 1 or 2 songs. Send me your hospital bill for the damage I caused. Hahah.

I was always one of those anti-greatest hits. But now, later in life, owning so much music, there are quite a few bands I really only needs the best of releases for, especially on vinyl, which is what I buy the most. Sadly, I still feel like I may be missing some of the better stuff from the band. With Aerosmith, I would probably choose a later best of that has the early and later hits, similar to that huge double release like the Bowie, were you get so much more in a single release.

hey jeff. yeh i hear ya but i just cant stand 80s & later aerosmith. even when it was new i didnt like it. i do think this one i have is pretty slim but it does me fine. im not a big fan to begin with any very rarely ever reach to listen to aerosmith. i’m kinda same with you too for years i tried to avoid best of’s as much as possible. but now its like who cares? thanks for tuning in!

Steve, I agree with you some of these, but I own everything from Aerosmith, even though their ‘70s albums are my favorites. I actually own 3 hits collections from the Stones, including 40 Licks, and nothing else, but only because they have way too many albums to collect. I have that same Bowie 2 disc collection, but I also own the Ziggy Stardust album because it’s a classic. A lot of those others, in Blink 182, would probably never make it in my collection, but I do have an ‘80s compilation with The Bangels and Flock of Seagulls I Ran in it.

@@excelsiormoviereviews i have heard that suicidal album. actually been looking for it on CD. never come across it. With CD I don’t mind picking up individual artist titles, especially when you’re able to pick them up for a $1. With Vinyl, I steer more towards picking up greatest hits album for a lot of artist with how expensive new pressing cost and used titles being difficult to find at a decent price. Plus with cd, I can just skip through bad songs more easy. With vinyl, I would just not play an album I own if I knew I had to get up to skip tracks. 😅

hey julio. yeh i get that. i guess im also being more picky these days about what im picking up. i was buying too much just cause it was cheap. running outta room and just finding too many ended up not being something i wanted to hold on to. but you are absolutely right about CD prices these days. Thanks for tuning in!

As I got older, I realized I didn’t need to have every artists’ complete catalog and really came to appreciate a good compilation. You mention many of the same artists I own compilations of. It’s really a personal choice. Some bands I own all or most of their catalog, and others, a Hits CD will suffice. As controversial as your David Bowie pick is, I’ve also eliminated the Bowie albums from my collection and replaced them with the same compilation you have. As hard as I tried to get into his album tracks, the hits were the only things I really liked from him. Same with Elton John, but I replaced GH & GH Volume 2 with Greatest Hits 1970-2002. However, I ask that you revisit The Rolling Stones (my absolute favorite band) as there really are some albums that have great songs that weren’t considered hits or singles.

First artist that comes to mind for me is John Mellencamp. I like pretty much all his hits, and i do (and have in the past) owned some of his albums but really all i need to get by is the hits. Take his Best O Could Do collection and add like 3 of his future hit songs and id be happy Steve Miller Band is another for me, Billy Joel, and I'm right there with you on Eddie Money, and even David Bowie. Now before i finished your video, i was thinking of a band that i figured would be controversial to admit that i really only need a hits collection.... and to my surprise it's the same one as you, the Rolling Stones lol
