My father ran away from his Ottumwa, Iowa home when he was 14 in 1920. He eventually joined the navy in the 1920s. He was discharged in Long Beach, CA and never went back. No sub zero winters and steaming humid summers ... As a kid I liked visiting my grandma and my relatives in Iowa, but the weather sucked.
