I imagine them to be promotion pictures from a German Scandi Romance movie, about a woman in the Norwegian/Swedish (Finnish or Estonian would also work) archipelago, on vacation or something, where she runs into this gorgeous man with the amazing sweaters, who fishes and sails and knows everything about life and Nature. Probably he is actually a marine biologist post doc saving the climate ... And he has all these wonderful sweaters, maybe he knits them himself, just like "Jamie" knits socks, and the sky is blue, the sea is blue, the cliffs are grey, the reeds are ochre ... maybe the romance turns out to be action somewhere?

They play a married couple, former spies, on vacation in New Orleans with their toddler daughter, when, of course, their old boss comes angling 'for just this one last job'. But of course. Fiona Shaw & Stanley Tucci play antagonists, and a good raft of other supporting actors are along for the ride. Yay, for improved kitty!!! I agree. I'm more aligned with romantic comdey. But, still less sex appeal and more emotional interaction. It's ridiculous the "unachievable" body types that are being betrayed by both genders. Also fun action films with romantic subplots. Less outright violence, goar, and kill, kill, kill.

The " Tommy & Tuppence " books by Agatha Christie might make a good jumping off point for what Jill is wanting Don't know them myself, but it is Husband & Wife Team of Detectives having Adventures The series starts in the 1920s, so you spice it up with Gangsters and Proto-Nazis, and hell, maybe Tarzan and Fu Manchu 😏 ( 😻 Sherlock 😻)

100% agreed. The Zorro movies were good fun. My mum actually got me to sit down and watch one of her favourite c-dramas (Cang Lan Jue/ Love Between Fairy and Devil) with her that was quite a good bit of fantasy with a romantic subplot that took its time and no explicit sex that was quite satisfying by the end. It's silly and serious, with some good fight-scenes thrown in as well. One of the most satisfying watches I've had in a while

One of my favorite books is Barrayar (second book specifically), because it's about a married couple in pretty rough situation. And yes, partially it's about their relationship and would they be together after this rough situation, but also it's not about that. I personally think we need much more books and movies/series about stuff like this. Really.

If you haven't seen The Lost City (2022, with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum) I might recommend it. It gave me a very Mummy/Zorro vibe, though without the actual swashbuckling (or at least I don't remember a lot of swords). But it was a fun adventure movie with some romance.
@kristenamaezing11 ай бұрын
ALSO here for The Lost City. Fun, adventure, a good dash of romance, Daniel Radcliffe being unhinged and hilarious! Watched it on a flight and loved it. Also love Our Flag Means Death- not quite what you're looking for, but a hilarious pirate comedy with a bit of swords and a dash of romance. Only on Max, I'm afraid, but it's Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby if that gives you a clue about tone.
@Rebecca_English11 ай бұрын
The Lost City reminded me of Romancing the Stone and the Jewel of the Nile in the best way! I miss movies like that, where normal-ish people get roped into a fun adventure that doesn't effect the fate of a nation or the entire world. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed most of the Marvel movies, but not everything has to be a high stakes multimillion extravaganza!
@MichaelSiegel1411 ай бұрын
Thank you for what you said about romance. We seem to have lost the plot on that one, where we've taken a reasonable position (female characters should not be entirely defined by romantic interest) and taken it to an extreme (female characters should not have romantic interests). Romance is fun! Romance is a huge part of the human experience! It's OK.

I think a movie that was kind of Mr & Mrs Smith mixed with the Mummy would be awesome to see. You take the married couple that have reached a point in their marriage where they're past the honeymoon phase and have reached the steady phase where they know each other well but could still surprise each other sometimes, add in some treasure-hunting (maybe the wife is an amateur archeologist or the daughter of a famous anthropologist or something) and set it in a time period where it's believable that the husband would be fending off baddies using a sword while his wife is in the background deciphering some pictograms or ancient text. That's the kind of movie I would actually go to cinemas to watch.

I just watched “Polite Society” which I think fits much of what you looking for in a film. It is about sisters, so not romance, but hits many of the same beats. There are multiple fantastically over-the-top fight scenes (mostly hand-to-hand and found weapons). But just generally a fun, wholesome vibe. But warning, the trailer gives away too many key plot points. I so wish I had watched it without seeing the trailer first.

Hey Jill, might I recommend the Timeless Fairytales books by K. M. Shea? It's a fantasy world reimagining of different European fairytales that actually overlap with each other. There are plenty of fight scenes, warriors both male and female, clean romance, relatively well-grounded world building, and lots and lots of humor! I think you would also like the Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus book series by Lydia Sherrer. There aren't any sword fights (so far), but there's a pretty cool magic system and, again, lots of witty humor :) It's a bit like Harry Potter meets Narnia. Check it out!

Disagree. The Fairytales by K.M. But, if the D&D movie can do well with today’s audience, why not pull a story built from D&D actual play from the 1980s?
