I was born in 79 but I still grew up with all in the family and especially the jeffersons. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were both bigots and ogres, they were flawed characters but at the end of the day they were decent men in thier own stubborn and small minded ways. By the social moral standards of today they would be on the fringe...especially archie bunker but back in the 70s everybody had someone like that in thier family or at least knew somebody like that. No room for political correctness and all just good laughs!! Because they represented real characters so well!

TV was better when characters were a reflection of reality - honest representations of people and their flaws, and genuine dialogue. Everything today feels culturally sanitized and fake because it is. Everyone is so easily offended now, to the point that honest conversations can't even be had, and people don't know how to laugh at themselves anymore. I fail to see how that's progress.

Right on. Today is actually a regression. People are more uptight than ever, so easily offended and so steeped in their ideologies that real conversations are hard to achieve. There is so much posing, acting, walking on eggshells and lack of honesty and authenticity. There is not room for people to have real encounters where they can explore their attitudes and show their vulnerabilities because everyone is always guarded and ready pounce. on anyone who does open up and the language police and puritans are always looking for any chance to label someone "racist" just as the puritans labelled anyone who disagreed with them a witch or the McCarthyites labelled anyone who criticized the system as a commie.

I grew up with Archie Bunker. What is missing in this clip is Archie's salvation. I think kids watching just this short clip will miss that there was more depth to this episode and, indeed, whole series.
@cousinjimmy26382 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Archie Bunker was a bigot, but it didn't come from a place of hatred but ignorance. A big part of the tantrum was grounded in the difficulty an interracial couple could face. Later on he buys his niece a Star of David, which is one of the most heart rending scenes in all of television.

I miss these times, when you could laugh and have fun because people could be themselves. I never felt like these shows made me " rascist". They helped people to understand different cultures and have a good time. Cancel culture fails to realize that taking everything away ,doesn't solve anything. People are stil going to be people . If you don't like someone, thats your personal choice. You don't need to burn down a whole community or take away history. That definitely will not bridge the cultural gap.

Norman Lear gave his wonderful actors excellent material and they ran with it magnificently. Today there would be too much fear to show all of the sides of racism and many of the other issues that were discussed on Lear's shows. It would be seen as politically incorrect, but that's where many young people today are missing the education that a show like this provided. These characters aren't black and white...no pun intended. There is a lot of gray to characters like Archie and it's in his grayness that we find the true gold of a show like this. Lear's hook was making you think it was all about comedy, but it was really about the lessons learned. His insite into our shared humanity is a beautiful thing to behold! If you haven't checked out his other shows, I encourage you to do so...each is like a fine work of art...each a masterpiece.

It has nothing g to do with being politically incorrect . Norman Lear is a big time Liberal . Archie's bigotry was meant to educate people about the racism and stupidity of a middle age man .
@jerrscott63733 жыл бұрын
Norman Lear was far to the left of center and created the character of Archie Bunker to mock conservatives. His intentions were that America would come to despise Archie Bunker. In fact, just the opposite happened. They embraced the character minus the racism. As a result, Norman Lear softened the character of Archie Bunker in the later episodes including Archie Bunker"s Place.
@marywood87943 жыл бұрын
@@jerrscott6373 I don't disagree with you that Lear is a liberal, but both Archie and Mike get their come uppance on All in the Family. That is my favorite part of the show. Neither the extreme liberal nor the extreme conservative gets it completely right. Everyone gets things wrong even when they think they're doing right. Nobody is perfect. At least shows like All in the Family talked about important issues without being stymied by political correctness. If we talked more openly and freely about our issues, we would be better off as a country.
