The only mistake Norman Lear ever made was not casting Maude in more episodes of All in the Family. The banter between Archie and Maude was comedy gold!

It wasn't Norman Lear's fault. Apparently, it was Fred Silverman (CBS executive) who rushed to give Bea Arthur her own show. That's what Norman Lear said years ago. Also (also it was said by Fred Silverman himself) there was a sense that it kind of took away the banter between Mike and Archie whenever Maude made an appearance

The story goes that a CBS executive was watching this episode when Bea came to aid the flu Bunkers and was so impressed by Bea Arthur, he called Lear and asked 'who was that womam?let's give her a series!'--- and Maude was formed!

_All in the Family_ changed American television in a way similar to the Beatles appearance on _Ed Sullivan._ Just as the Beatles transformed American music literally overnight, there was television before _All in the Family_ and television after _All in the Family._ No one had ever seen or heard anything like _All in the Family_ on the American airwaves before.

Ron Glass played the hilarious black helper in this episode, which propelled him to stardom later on Barney Miller. He was brilliant too.

Can you just imagine if Flo got a random visit from Maude tho? But that wouldn’t have made any sense considering the writers retconned Florida’s home setting from Harlem to Chicago. A real meta moment was a scene on Good Times where one of the Evans is actually reading a copy of Ebony magazine featuring the cast of The Jeffersons! What a cool moment that was.

Anybody remember the hilarious Maude parody Carol Burnett did on her own weekly show? It was called Broad and even featured it’s own theme song-“And The There’s BROAD!” I laughed ‘til I cried! And in a bonus meta moment Isabel Sanford (who portrayed Weezie on The Jeffersons,) parodied Esther Rolle’s Florida. In the Broad spoof, her name was Georgia! 🤣🤣🤣❤️

That sounds wonderful! One of the best comedy bits I've ever seen was Carol Burnett parodying the original Star Trek. They go through a warped dimension, or some such, and when the ship comes out the other side, they're all women, (Except Uhara!) - including the evil alien they've been communicating with on the big screen. It is HILARIOUS.

The irony is that Bea Arthur had a long career on Broadway, way before she entered television. She knew both O’Connor and Stapleton from the Broadway days, and she was an old friend of Norman Lear. She didn’t want to be on tv, but relented when Lear begged her, and she’d work with her old friends (Caroll & Jean) from the old days.

Mr. Lear or anyone else who actually knows, I know that Norman Lear developed the character of Maude at least in part with Bea Arthur in mind to play the role, but has anyone heard him speak or write of where his inspiration for the character came from? These Lear productions are precious to me and an invaluable part of our culture and history and in many ways remain as relevant today as ever. Most of them being, especially but not certainly only, virtually every episode of “All in the Family.”.

It's a damn shame all these shows didn't have a big prime time crossover. George Jefferson and Maude would've made a dynamic tag-team against Archie. The interactions between all the characters in All In The Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, and Good Times would've been comedy gold.

I remember reading in a magazine years ago that Bea Arthur wondered if she should have done the TV show Maude. Bea ended up divorcing her husband and felt the show may have pushed it in that direction. Later, I heard Bea Arthur say in a TV interview Damm We Were Good when reflecting back on the ground breaking show.

I had a Jewish Foster mother, who believed marrying outside of the Jewish faith was going against a Jewish law. Especially if it's to marry "a Gentile woman." It breaks the line and turns the children into Gentiles, because "their mother isn't Jewish." She didn't hold with he practice of "turning a Gentile woman Jewish through a manmade ceremony created by the synagogue instead of Jewish law.
