A loving tribute to the great pillar of holding up My Hero Academia, All Might. I do a little light delve into why I think All Might works so brilliantly as a mentor character and a playful interpretation of the Superman archetype.
All Might has quickly become one of my favorite shonen mentor's and I go through all the reasons why I think he embodies the values of Superman better than Superman himself.

why we love all might, we actually love the skeletal all might, he is the true all might for us, cause he is frail inside, we know the burden he carries and we can actually relate to him cause he is a normal human being wielding "borrowed" power trying everything in his might to protect and do good, bearing the whole world on his shoulders, actually i can surelly say that when we see all might... we see our father, a father image. thats how he is portrayed in the series, as a father to midoriya. thats how midoriya sees him and thats how we see him. if you are watching the walking dead rick grimes is a verry similarly portrayed character. all might for me is the most interesting character and hooked me into the series and is actually a big part of the series and i believe we will see him for a long time to come. superman on the other hand is just as you describe it, a hard character, he is not human, he is pure good and moral which actually hardly exist in our world so its hard to relate to him, supermans character is barelly ever shown to us, if i would have to use words to describe his character it would be emotionless, hollow, bare, unreachable, althought he has desires and feelings emotions and inner strugles, it is somehow distant hiden and when conveyed to us done with so much struggle and effort, he is just "hard to reach for us" if you know what i mean and thats why hard to relate to. superman is like an idea of pure good manifested in human shape and form. i have seen all the superman movies and if he would really die in one of them ever i wouldnt flinch, on the other hand if all might died i would be heartbroken.

Kristijan Majstorić dude I agree with most of you said but the part of Superman is all in the writter a short story called "Peace on Earth" actually does the job right in give you a Superman you can relate to. The same with "Whatever that happened to the man of tomorrow" or the movie and comic "All Star Superman" that really suprised me making me actually care about the character to the point of dropping some tears by the end. You should check some of them out. After so many bad stories of Superman wouldnt hurt look some of the good ones

Well the idea of Superman isn´t the idea of a demigod, is a human with the powers of a god.There is a big difference and most writers can´t do it right.Its a pity that Superman has this image of a bad character when he is much more.

Superman in the comics is a fantastic character, though. The Superman people love isn't some distant, uncaring alien; he's a dude from Kansas who happens to have powers and chooses to do good, to never give up and always fight the good fight. The whole point of Superman is that he is an idealistic and seemingly perfect symbol, but is actually the most human and relatable character underneath all those crazy powers.

The problem with Superman is people try to make him realistic or edgy like Batman. All Might is like how I always wanted Superman to be portrayed. A real symbol of good and heroism for people. I like the current run of Superman, it seems to get some things right. But man, All Might inspires a fire in me like no one else. DC, take notes.

One thing I've noticed, and both All Might and (oddly) Bakugo embody, is that the characters we are intended to like have an internal integrity. All Might, inside, is just as brave and self-sacrificing as he presents hmself to be. Bakugo is crude and violent but absolutely refuses to be a villain, and makes no excuses. Even Stain holds true to his beliefs and morals. The characters we aren't expected to like, such as Endeavor, hide their true natures behind a mask - he's not the brave, self-sacrificing hero he claims to be, he's only concerned with beating All Might and when he can't, "creating" a "spawn" who can.

Discussing the spoiler: I think the fact that All Might didn't die during his final epic battle was actually more brilliant than it seems at first glance. Yes, that was an incredible scene on it's own. But this sets him up for one last character arc that is rarely explored: What to do after the fall. Where he has to accept that he is no longer the symbol of peace, and just a dead man walking. Yes, he is going to die eventually, and in a spectacularly horrible fashion (The Manga has a prophesy from a different character who can see the future). Even All for One notes how easy it would have been for All Might to just die right then and there during the fight, giving Deku the final push he needs to become his own hero. And it might even prove to be the "correct" way to have done things, given the grumblings from some members of the general public and various institutions, both heroic and villainous. This potential conclusion to All Might's story has me hooked, even more so than the main story with Deku at this point.
@lobstermagnetreview

Some good thoughts there. If I had to guess he'll get disintegrated by Tomura as he tries to hug him which will trigger some kind of flashback to his childhood and how he was left in a slum and abandoned due to his disintegration quirk. I'm a little bit weary about a potential death for All Might though, just because it's been so telegraphed that I hope there's something else to defy our expectations and make it really sad and tragic.
@Danzibe89
@Danzibe89 7 жыл бұрын
Only for the manga readers to find out later that All Might knows exactly when he is going to die and knew he wasn't going to die there fighting All For One which invalidates the whole arc....
@yoursonisold8743
@yoursonisold8743 7 жыл бұрын
+Danzibe89 Thats not entirely true. All Might only knew he was going to die "this or next year". Basically he could have died every single day since the series began. So he was absolutely not sure whether his fight against All For One was that fated time.
@DBZM1k3
@DBZM1k3 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure All Might's death being so telegraphed is such a bad thing. I say this because One Piece did something similar with Ace. I would say that the whole plot around Ace during the Marineford arc was very well executed. And I would love to see All Might struggle while his friends and colleagues try their best to save his life. I want to see and feel what is going through his head as he is powerless to support them in protecting him. And for it all to be futile in the end, for his death to be inevitable may be a great way to go with this. Possibly even tying it back and weaving in his origin story while this stuff happens. If something like this can be done and executed well I think it will only serve to cement the strength of this story.
@Danzibe89
@Danzibe89 7 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree at all tbh. given how sometimes a character death is necessary for another to step up might give Deku the boost he needs to stop being a wimp (and yes even in the manga he's still a wimp) he's only gotten to 8% and hasn't learned anything past Full Cowl except how to use it better.

Superman in the past was great but all might is a teacher Superman in most of his comics barely smiles due to ridiculous childish edge but allmight is human in a way he’s better because he never falters unlike Superman who fought with doomsday and died, all might fought nomu (literally japans version of doomsday) and won with a honest to god smile on his face. He’s scared of what might happen but he’s human enough to face it just like Clark Kent or cal-el or better known as Superman they aren’t both great because they can punch a bad guy to oblivion their great because they inspire hope in their smiles so shut the fuck up you god damn children. Injustice sucks because that’s not Superman not mine anyway

I loved this video, I found your videos after being linked the one about Shiragaki but I personally like this one just a bit more. I absolutely adored your description of All For One, the man is just the pure definition of a Super Villain. What makes me love the All Might and All For One conflict is that it feels like its the ending to another manga or comic we never saw. I think there is a special aura you get when you start to read or watch something midway through, this doesn't happen to much now a days as its so easy to watch or read things from the beginning, but this did a great job of emulating it.

This is why I absolutely love the English dub of My Hero and feel it's equal and in my opinion slightly better than the original, because of the brilliant casting of Chris Sabat as All Might. When you hear All Might's English voice, it just perfectly embodies everything about him. He can sound boisterous and heroic, larger than life, allowing every combined childhood memory of Silver Age Western comic books and cartoons to flood your mind and put a big smile on your face. Then in the same minute when he turns into his true form, he sounds grizzled, weary and jaded, but still has presence and dignity in his voice. The casting for the other characters in the dub are great too, Deku especially, but the English voice for All Might is what makes the dub just WORK. All Might is the pillar of this story and Deku's journey, and I'm glad they got the perfect voice for him. Major props to Chris Sabat for his wonderful performance and all the best to him in continuing to voice the symbol of peace. And don't forget that "PLUS ULTRA". You loved it too.

Aaron KTJ literally everything you said in why the Japanese version is better. The English dub will almost never represent the authors intentions better because it was not made for that purpose, the Japanese one was. And don't even get me started on how shit literally everyone else in the series sounds. Season 2 it gets slightly better line wise but in season 1 not only do the voices sound half assed but the lines are cringe and nothing at all like the original.
@SwitchbackCh
@SwitchbackCh 7 жыл бұрын
I don't see how anything I said disproved my opinions. Obviously a dub will not capture the original's intent, but even original dubs are not 100% true to intention. They are able to take lines word-for-word from the manga, but for the voices, it's not like the original artist is going around picking the voices himself, an anime company is doing it on his behalf based on the source material. That said, the English dub works for me. The setting of My Hero (superheroes) and it's more Western-influenced art style lends itself well to English dubbing. I don't normally watch dubs myself because it doesn't feel like the characters should be speaking English, but My Hero fits better in that respect, and that is why I prefer it. English dub of anime will always be a compromise between respecting the source material and making it friendlier for a worldwide audience. That alone is good reason why it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you don't like dubs in general, that is perfectly fine, but as someone who doesn't mind either way, the dub does a great job, at least compared to other dubs, and can only improve as time goes on.

funi is just trash imo. Chris sabat is overused because fanboys love him, but he kinda ruined the episode 11-12 fight by HAVING to use reverb. Dubs will never be as good as they once were because funi is complacent trash. Im hype for the TFS official dub because they are the only people i can actually stand atm. (jsyk id rather watch eureka 7 and FLCL in dub.) just funi is legit subpar and i cant stand it. Also, They DONT take line for line word for word. Funi gets their translations from VIZ who is always nortorious for throwing Americanized cringe phrases in there because japanese has a weird way of being translated. I even find translations Americanized on crunchyroll ever since they fucking teamed up with funi. Its legit cancer.

This is a reason why I Jane Foster as Thor, she is on the ticking clock as her Cancer will eventually be the end of her time as a hero. Every time she picks up the Hammer it is bringing her closer to Death, but she does it cause she is a hero, this is why she was worthy. She values life so much because she knows her own is coming to an end, and it makes me really sad because I came to love her character in this short time. Her feats and what she has gone through sure are going to be memorable, she met the Pheonix Force, an entity of life and death, knowing her time was limited yet she still persisted. She befriended Heimdall, one who can see all, past and future, he offered to tell her how much longer she had left; but she told him not to, however short her future was, she was willing to face the unknown. Death of Thor will be starting in a few months, and I'll be a wreck for a bit

One of the BIG aspects you mixed here is that All Might is a genuinely caring mentor. He's apologetic when he makes a mistake, he's explanatory when he hasn't been understood, he's sympathetic and empathetic, and even when he disagrees with someone, he acknowledges their feelings rather than refuting them or telling them that they're wrong. That's fucking unbelievable. That's is a deeply caring and supportive character, written to nurture his replacements not berate them into excelling or tricking them into excellence. Think, for a moment about beloved pop culture mentor Mr Miyagi. He often jokes at Daniel's expense, he hides the training they're doing to seem wise, and at no time does he approach the antagonists and offer to train them too, or just inquire about why they are so militant. Shit, I'm sitting here trying to imagine how All Might would have treated the kids of Cobra Kai, and realizing I'M not nurturing or empathetic enough to properly contextualize the character!

here's a something i find interesting, All-might's symptoms (a failing body that, when using his super powers, causes him to be in pain) feels like something Jane Foster took inspiration from when she became Thor, or to be more precise the writer for her story, Jane Foster and All-Might are both heroes who's bodies are failing them, yet they possess super powers that, while make them all most near invincible, take a huge toll on their body and in the end both perform heroic feats that ultimately force them to retire. Not saying either one copied the other, but that's it's pretty inspiring to have these kind of heroes, All-Might and Jane Foster serving as a symbol of peace and heroism while also battling their own bodies.

37th, this is really good. I've loved Superman since the allstar movie but he being so hard to write makes It so difficult to find stories where they get the full potential out of the character. I bellive that the most effective way to use him is to explore the effect that he has on the world around him like this series uses allmight as more or less the motivation of the protagonist and the basis of the hero society.

Thank you so much for becoming my 37th subscriber. Means a lot to me. Don't know if you've ever read American Alien, but I'd highly recommend you check it out. Probably one of the best Superman stories I've seen in a long while.

added to the list, you are doing a really good job with these more analitical videos. Are you going to do similar ones on characters from other series like one piece and so?
@lobstermagnetreview

Funny you should mention that. My next video is going to be on One Piece. I don't think I'll necessarily be doing like just character videos. Mostly it'll be on topics I think I have something interesting to say about. Like for example after the One Piece one is done. I really want to do a video on the 2016 Ghost Busters, because there's one observation I have on why it was so derisive and hated that I have not heard anyone else talk which is why I'm eager to make that video. But of course, my undying love of shonen manga means there are plenty of topics I want to go over.

All Might is one of the best characters ever, and one of the best superhero characters ever, because he's exactly what a hero should be and is a hero that is so incredibly relatable to everyone he inspires. His true form, the person he really is, is weak and powerless and somewhat self-conscious and depressed about this, but he -plus ultras- pushes beyond all of that to be someone who is strong and powerful and can bring people safety and hope and happiness, even if it hurts him, even if it's hard for him, because he truly is _that_ kind and caring and good of a person: his eternal "all might" smile may be fake, but doing what he does is what genuinely makes him happy, and he sacrifices so much to be able to keep doing that. To someone who is not a superhero, or otherwise weak in some other way, All Might proves that even they can have moments of strength and overcoming what holds them back, no matter how weak they think they are, as shown in his final fight against All for One. To know that even someone who seems so strong and confident and unflinching on the outside and that you idolize so much is not infallible, is simultaneously just as weak as an average citizen if not more, but still is able to accomplish so much, is truly poignant, and inspiring, and _relatable,_ and makes All Might _human. That's_ what makes a good superhero, and that's why I love All Might. "You too, _even you,_ can become a hero."

A young powerless boy that wants to see everyone smile and safe is just a *true* hero. I think that, if we forget about the money they earn, that's what Stain love about All Might. Just a smiling guy that tells you "Everything is alright. Why ? Because I'm here !". No really, All Might.. Toshinori is a man that is a great inspiration to me. He remembers me a bit of Emiya Shirou from Fate/Unlimited Blade Works but yeah I prefer All Might of course. But that way of thinking is just so heroic and pure, and I just fricking love it. I want to be like him, someone strong that everyone will count on him even in his hard times (like in S3 EP11). Even if he looks beaten, people would still believe in him if he's still standing. Yeah, my favorite character in japan animation *so far.* I'm glad they written him so well, because he's my hero now.

Great video! I have a minor correction. That's the limitations or weakness of a superhero are needed to divide (differentiate?) them from demigods like Hercules and Jesus. What you said about Superman was 100% correct: he is the antithesis of cynicism and moral compromise.

All Might is one of the purest, most genuinely likeable characters I've ever seen in any series. He's got a solid heart and an iron will, and when he's in pain you hurt with him. He understands he can't be everywhere, but it hurts him all the same.

they all for one vs all might never fails to make me feel and tear up a bit, and I'm actually glad I saw it in the anime first, the tension is written on every character's face and it feels palpable, the pacing and music and acting just sell it and make the audience on the same page as all the students watching the news broadcast in the show and just for a time complete suspension of disbelief so beautiful, plus ultra

This anime is just superb. All might is such an amazing character that he literally was the reason I watched. I do not care for deku at all really. All might is just perfect. He truly believes in all he says and is willing to die to stand by his values. After he had to retire, I stopped enjoying the show, until that is, Togata fought chisaki, that was amazing too.

Anyone feel like All Might and Izumi Curtis have some ridiculous similarities? I'm not just talking about the blood or apparently being known as an extremely powerful individual in their respective series. I'm talking about taking on the main character as a pupil and teaching them to be independent and to do good for others while simultaneously warning them that their world is not sugar and butterflies and they can't just do whatever they want without repercussions. Idk maybe no one else sees it, i just thought it was an interesting notion.
@lobstermagnetreview
@lobstermagnetreview 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought, but the thing about Izumi is that with her dreadlocks she always had the appearance of a sort of countercultural figure while All Might is quite literally the embodiment of the establishment.
@TheEphemeralEternity
@TheEphemeralEternity 7 жыл бұрын
Thats a fair point.. Also I feel like she was a bit more tough on Ed and Al than All Might has been on Midoriya. While he has been encouraging Midoriya to be the next symbol of peace, Izumi tries explicitly to restrict the use of taboo, but I also think that comes down to the characters they are training. While Midoriya is trying to be the essence of a true hero in a world where people are heroes purely as an occupation, Edward (at first) was willing to do whatever it took to bring their mother back even if it was deemed wrong.Now that I think about it, All Might can also be considered a counter culture figure because the "heroes" around him are easily corrupted, and he is training Midoriya to be the same as him; just as Izumi had trained Ed to really think about the costs of alchemy when the rest of the world view it as a tool. I think this might be why she gives off more of a counter culture feel too, both her and All Might try to keep their students on the straight and narrow but their respective pupils have a very different outlook on the world so she has to be more restrictive in some aspects. So I guess you could look at these two more as foil characters due to their situations, but i still think they are very similar in their moral character design.
