Hereditary is perfect in many ways. I saw it when it came out and it messed me up so much and stayed in my mind for months and months. It puts that pit in your stomach and keeps it there for two hours. A pure nonstop unsettling feeling. Ari Aster killed it and is on my must watch list. Love it so much.

Dan, I was with you every time you said Toni deserved that Oscar. "I never wanted to be your mother" was one of the most shocking lines I've heard in years and I don't know why. In context, I was shocked she went there.
@monsterjuicedgangster43573 жыл бұрын
You missed two things brother: 1) when Collette opens her mother’s chest she finds a bottle of a black substance that was vital for the ritual, that’s why the grandmother had to feed Charlie because she would add it inside, and the director stated that the son character ingested it from the weed he smoked with his friends, as one of them was in the cult which you can see him at the end in the tree house. 2) after the funeral scene early in the movie, before the family steps foot into the house, you can hear foot steps coming from the attic, showing that the cult members were already there.
@keefriff993 жыл бұрын
Ari Aster is one twisted bastard! Hereditary and Midsommar are both genre masterpieces IMO.
@m.worthy3 жыл бұрын
34:30 The cult did _repeatedly_ enter the Graham family house _throughout the movie_ . Somehow, early in the film, _the cult members removed grandmother Ellen Leigh's corpse from the grave site and put the corpse in the attic of the Graham house_ . 😵☠ Also (35:19 - 35:34) that _"S - word"_ got on the walls within the Graham family home because _the cult members had accessed the house and wrote the word on the walls in further attempts to get Graham family members to say that word aloud in order to allow the demon to further manifest into the household or directly into the son Peter_ . The cult had also even been putting that word in the mailbox of the Graham home in attempts to get Peter or any Graham family members to say the word aloud inside of their home. 😵😵😵😵 The Graham family had been under siege from the very start of the movie (and before that if you go by Annie's family history).

I have such an intense love for this movie. Its core story of familial generational trauma and how that is couched within this supernatural possession. Because that's what it feels like, to be in the middle of such a horrible situation, it's almost like someone has taken over you and you can't explain it or believe it's real and truly happening. The filmmaking was terrific, the cast of actors all brilliant. Such a stellar film!

Imagine if the warning in trailers had been, *_"Film contains actual demon-King references throughout, made central to the production."_* Instead, you get tricked into purchasing a ticket to a cult ritual which literally introduces global audiences to a demon they'd previously probably never heard of. 📽 _Oh the power of film!_ 😵

Love that you did this one, Dan! You & Roth turned me on to this one @ SJ, it was my first midnight screening ever, and my god, what an experience. I've probably seen it about 10 times by now, seen every KZbin deep-dive I could find, can't get enough! It's one of my favorite movies of all time, and definitely one of the most impeccably constructed... Some thoughts on interpretation that I haven't seen a lot elsewhere (on the off chance Dan or fellow commenters might see/like these - I could talk for hours about this one, and would love to hear Dan's thoughts on this): -At one point I went on 'turquoise watch', since Paimon's 'light'/essence is a teal-ish shade and more or less represents his influence. In the house, Charlie's room, Peter's room, and Annie's workspace are all painted/wallpapered turquoise - and so is the paint bottle you pointed out! (great pointing out that it's NOT knocked over - Aster stacks the frame juuuust right so it might pass without inspection.) That might just be an extra layer of 'these people were primed for their entire lives'. Also the movie is graded with a kinda conventional Teal/Orange look, but towards the end almost all warm tones disappear and it's basically ALL teal. -You called Peter's panic attack psychosomatic, and yes, maybe - but I tend to believe it might be the biggest hint to how much influence Paimon actually has on these events! In that moment, Peter quotes Charlie VERBATIM "I think my throat's getting bigger", and one thing that always stood out to me in such a well-shot movie is the weird lens flare that appears over his head at that precise moment. Here's the thing though - that lens flare is tinted slightly turquoise (it's definitely not a straight white). You might conclude then that Paimon's trying to break his spirit - but if he can summon that choking sensation just to F*** with people (we know he can distort his victims' bodies/faces), was Charlie even allergic to nuts AT ALL, or was that just Paimon seeing an out? While she's building her My Little Effigy(TM), she's eating M&M's that audibly crunch - coupled with the Peter attack you could conclude that Paimon just 'made her choke'/sent her into anaphylactic shock to facilitate his plans. -I personally don't think Joan had a son/grandson at all - considering like you said in the seance it's DEFINITELY Paimon. Roth called it a dog-and-pony-show, it does feel like it. Your headcanon is definitely intriguing though. -I love how you can extend the miniature/puppet metaphor to the camerawork as well, so many locked off wide frames, but also some eerily slow, almost stalking dollies and pans (the shot of Annie crying post-finding Charlie panning to Peter standing in the hallway comes to mind). You might even be able to argue that on rewatch, the camera 'becomes an extra character' due to its perspective functionally being the same as the Cult/Paimon's. Trust me, the movie gets even more eerie when you see the camera as Paimon's 'predator' POV. Fun stuff. -Annie finds a weird herb in her tea at Joan's (there's an insert shot), these were also supposed to be visible in the milk in the polaroid where Grandma holds baby Charlie - I JUST realised that her dad starving himself was probably-maybe to prevent mom from pulling a Midsommar and drugging him to bits. -The one thing I still can't really figure out in this movie is why Steve is set on fire when Annie throws the book into the fire. It's literally the only moment that just feels like a random kick in the teeth, which really stands out in a movie where everything is SO meticulously planted. 'The Demon did it to F with them' ok but so far the demon hasn't been that fickle/capricious and randomness actively undermines the cosmic sense of inevitability/dread the rest of the movie imparts. And some easter-eggy stuff that doesn't really change the story all that much but is still AWESOME: -When the family gets back from the first funeral, they hold on that hallway wide shot - and you can actually hear SUPER-faint footsteps running upstairs, crucially without a door-closing (Aster's talked about deliberately removing that sound - so presumably a cult member's still inside). Shortly after, Annie finds the triangle marking on the floor of her mother's room. Creeeeeeeeepyyyyyyy I hate/love it -A lot of people know this but at the party when Peter's getting high his friends are watching decapitation videos. -So we're all in agreement that that animal in the road was 99% sure placed there by the cult right? -The woman waving at Charlie is the left-most one out of the naked 3 that greet Peter in the attic after he sees his mother hanging there. (Where he, slightly comedically, goes "AAH!" and jumps out the window). I looked whether any of his teachers/classmates were among the cult members, but couldn't find any. -When Joan 'finds' Annie when shopping, a guy in the back gets in his car and doesn't leave. Some people say they see him adjusting his mirrors to keep an eye on the conversation (cultist control), but I haven't seen that yet. -The dad's corpse is also decapitated when Peter finds him in the final minutes. -In the scene where 'Charlie' possesses Annie, in the second close up on Peter (going "Mom, please stop, Mommy!" etc.) there's ACTUALLY a guy standing in the hallway, who walks away. I only saw that on like my 10th viewing, chills, STILL. UGH I LOVE THIS MOVIE Okbye. Great work as always, Dan! You're my favorite critic and make great stuff. Cheers!

Just listened to the podcast version of this episode and just wanted to comment what I said back when you and Roth did an indepth review of this on Screen Junkies, which is that I'd love if you did more stuff like this. It's fun talking about the big Blockbuster movies and you should definitely keep doing that too if that's what you enjoy, but it's much more interesting for me when you can do deep dives on these more complex movies and really get into the themes and symbolism that people like me have a harder time figuring out on our own. If you enjoy The Green Knight I'd really love for you to do a deep analysis of that movie. I really liked it, but man I didn't understand a lot of it. I have a better understanding now that I've thought about it and listened to a few people talk about it, but I'd really like to hear your take on what was going on and what it all meant.

There are two things in particular with this movie that strike me. The first is the color palette and how fairly mundane teal, yellow, orange and the shade of red work during the movie.
