Furiosa is my #1 film of the year so far, and I’m so unbelievably disheartened it didn’t make more money. George Miller is 79 years old, and his Mad Max films are singular in style and vision. If George Miller isn’t able to make his next Mad Max film because of Furiosa’s box office, I will never be able to forgive that.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out years later that there was a bunch of dissension amongst the creatives behind the movie. Its commentary is anemic and splintered, and it really seems like there was a difference in what people wanted this movie to be behind the scenes.

@@ArynWellspring It didn't have anything profound to say, and frankly it stole quite a bit from Oliver Stone's Salvador. But it still had the POC in the refugee camp wthile the whites were in suburbia. The violence was done by white men while you had an extremely unrealistic scene with an elderly black actor. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Furiosa. I knew it would probably be good, but I didn't expect it to be so great. I don't think it's fair to compare Furiosa to Fury Road since it's such a different film. It's a slower, more somber and contemplative movie. There are so many great details that are easy to miss with just one viewing. And Furiosa does so much more to flesh out the wasteland. It develops the politics, economy, logistics, culture, and power dynamics of the wasteland. I am just really impressed at how much thought George Miller has put into every aspect of this world. This is the kind of world building that I wish every sci-fi/fantasy/comic book franchise had. Disney/WB/Paramount/Universal/etc. all need someone like George Miller as the main creative director behind their franchises.

Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

Nice to see "Ghostlight" acknowledged. Small film, unheralded, full of small truths and big (yet quietly rendered) emotions. Thank you. But note to serious critics: In any given year, you're lucky to have only two or three solidly fine ones which survive the test of time. Top Ten Lists are cumbersome and not authentic. They also tend to bury films like "Ghostlight."

George Miller is the best movie maker right now, a close second is James Cameron.

I'm glad you said that the ending didn't do it for you in Love Lies Bleeding Stars. I have been meaning to read The House of Sand and Fog ever since I saw the film so many years ago. I loved it. I mean I LOVED the book; it totally broke my heart. However, I hated the ending. And I understand why the author wrote this particular ending- it is so effective- but I loved the character of Kathy so much I hated the ending. I can't believe a man wrote the character of Kathy. I probably like her as much as I like Jane Eyre, which is saying a lot. Thanks for the review. I didn't like Dune 2 as much as I liked the first one. I'm definitely going to buy 100 Beavers. I might even buy it as a Christmas gift for someone I know.

Just saw the horror movie "Oddity" and it shot up to my top five (at least) of 2024 instantly. Hope Dan can review it, would love to hear his thoughts.

I saw about 0.2s of your clips of Hundred of Beavers before I knew it was from the people that made Lake Michigan Monster.

Glad that Late Night with the Devil got mentioned, it did an excellent job building tension and David Dastmalchian is fantastic

Furiosa is my favourite. Can't believe I am saying this when I had a blast with Dune Part 2 this year.

Hundreds of beavers is ridiculous! Also has many ties to video game tropes. Highly recommended to experience that silliness taken seriously is unbeatable.

"I don't cry at a whole lot of movies, more as I get older." You're just slightly older than I am, and this is my experience as well. If you don't like it I wouldn't recommend having a kid lol pretty much every time I see something involving a kid in a movie or a TV show the tears are coming.

Dune 2 and The First Omen were ok. That's my whole list. I'm really not enjoying modern cinema. Yuma County came out here recently, but was technically a 2023 movie. That was pretty good.

My list so far: 1. Dune: Part Two 9/10 2. Love Lies Bleeding 8/10 3. The Fall Guy 8/10 4. Challengers 8/10 5. I Saw the TV Glow 8/10 6. Abigail 7/10 7. The Beekeeper 7/10 8. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 7/10 9. Late Night with the Devil 7/10 10. Evil Does Not Exist 7/10 11. Immaculate 7/10 12. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 7/10 13. Bad Boys: Ride or Die 7/10 14. Civil War 7/10 15. Hit Man 7/10 16. A Quiet Place: Day One 7/10 17. Suncoast 7/10 18. Road House 7/10 19. The First Omen 6/10 20. Mean Girls 6/10 21. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare 6/10 22. The Last Kumite 6/10 23. The Strangers: Chapter 1 6/10 24. Arthur the King 6/10 25. Monkey Man 6/10 26. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire 5/10 27. Miller’s Girl 4/10 28. Irish Wish 4/10 29. Argylle 4/10 30. I.S.S. 4/10 31. Scoop 4/10 32. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One 3/10 33. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Two 3/10 - Top 5 are the strongest films on this list. With the first three I have "no notes', they're just great. Challengers is great as well but some of the character choices didn't click with me, while I Saw the TV Glow has a pretty abrupt ending. Still, it really hooked me in. - Top 15 or even top 20 are movies I all really enjoyed and that while not great have something for everyone. For instance: The Beekeeper is a perfect dad movie, Furiosa is a flawed epic, Late Night with the Devil is a Halloween classic, Evil Does Not Exist is a slow contemplative movie, both A Quiet Place and Planet of the Apes had strong entries in their franchises, Bad Boys 4 is a lot of fun and Immaculate/The First Omen are both solid entries in the abortion rights/possession horror. - I'd say top 25 are all watchable. The rest is pretty bad.

Dune 2 is amazing, one of my favorite movies overall not just this year. Furiosa was also excellent. I thought the planet of the apes was solid. Civil War was a decent comeback for Garland after the godawful Men.
