This is an absolutely brilliant idea! Especially if there's a forced delay between each time the phone is put inside the mailbox. This way, checks could only happen 2 or 3 times a day, or within specific time ranges. I love it !

LOVE. It features in this month's HackSpace magazine (out on Thursday) and I'm putting on the Raspberry Pi blog this week! (Or next... maybe next... the internet does distract me so often)

Cool! Great idea and execution! The spring switch was indeed ingenious!

Also I think this actually could be an awesome device re: digital minimalism! I think the future is combining digital and analog and you did just that-super cool!!

That's awesome! No questions here. Initially, I thought you'd have an NFC tag to detect the phone. The spring switch is very creative and mimics toy-like electronic mechanisms and circuits :P

This is such an amazing project! On top of being great for a clean headspace, I just like the experience of "checking my mail" with a little mailbox!

Nice project. I’ve never heard of that kind of switch. Great idea, well done!

Nice one. I went one step further and disabled notifications for most apps completely. This way my phone became a phone again, and I decide when to check for messages and stuff. It is a totally wrong path to expect everyone to react to everything just in time.

Ahah! Amazing project!! :) but what about powering? If raspberry became your wifi, it need constant 5v connection?
@GuyDupont Жыл бұрын
Yup good question! Was originally going to have the Raspberry pi inside the mailbox, but didn't want to run power. That's why I brought in the microcontroller - the pi can live in the closet or wherever, the mailbox can be battery powered and just act like a wireless extension

Cool, but why don't do it with a prossimity sensor instead? It would be way easier (I think) and it doesn't wear down by using it (or if you have an iphone an hall effect sensor)
@GuyDupont Жыл бұрын
Proximity sensor would be great but I don't think easier in this case (spring thing really only took a few mins, I just hot glued them). I also would have to do a bit more to get proximity sensor to wake the microcontroller up since the output is usually analog. Hall effect is an awesome idea, actually - I use a case with magsafe built in. I think ideally I would figure out a way to use NFC/RFID so I could actually determine which phone is inserted.

can you reverse the action (block whenever you put it in there/unblock once you take it out)?
