This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross and the Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUVs. The Subaru Crosstrek is a little bit longer than the Toyota Corolla Cross. They both offer about the same front legroom, but you’ll be able to stretch out more in the Subaru, it offers 4.5 inches more second row legroom. The Toyota wins in overall cargo capacity with over 10 cubic feet more space. The new Corolla Cross has a 2L 4-cylinder engine matched with a CVT, 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available.The Crosstrek has two engine options, a 2L 4-cylinder matched with a CVT, 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. A manual transmission is available. The second option is a 2.5L 4-cylinder, 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque.
These two are evenly matched offering excellent ground clearance, the Corolla Cross at 8.2 inches and the Crosstrek with 8.7 inches. They both come with similar standard features; the Corolla Cross has a 7” touchscreen, the Crosstrek 6.5” with an available 8” touchscreen in both. The Corolla Cross has standard LED headlights and taillights but the Crosstrek halogen headlights, available LED headlights. You can get a heated steering wheel on both, one up from the base model. The option of a larger engine on the Crosstrek is definitely something to consider. The Crosstrek top Limited trim with the 2.5L engine will only cost you an extra $500 CAD compared to the top Corolla Cross XLE trim. Not only is that great value, but you are getting an extra 13 horsepower and 25 lb-ft of torque. For fuel economy, there isn’t a huge difference between the 2L 4-cylinder AWD models. The Corolla Cross gets 8.1L/100km, 29 MPG city and 7.4L, 32 MPG highway and the Crosstrek 8.5L/100km, 28 MPG city and 7L, 33 MPG highway. The Corolla Cross AWD starts at $26,290 CAD/$23,495 USD and the Crosstrek $25,795 CAD/$23,295 USD.

Thank you for taking time to be honest about the noise factor. NVH is extremely important for that feel of quality and absolutely decides whether I am happy with a vehicle. Much more attention needs to be given to this aspect of a vehicle’s design by auto manufacturers and the vehicle critics who are trying to help us use our money wisely.

I had a Subaru station wagon for 14 years which I loved! Then I got a 2007 Lexus RX 350 in 2011. I am 70 and want to have something a little more updated for the next 10 to 15 years of my life if I drive that long. I love my Lexus and would buy a new one if they weren’t so expensive. . I think the Subaru that you reviewed is the way to go , Especially because I hate road noise and after driving my Lexus for so long and realizing what a quiet ride it is. It only has 97,000 miles on it. I hope I can get a good price for it. There’s nothing wrong with it but it doesn’t have a back up camera or any of the modern bells and whistles. I love your videos it is helping me so much to learn about these vehicles.

Crosstrek aftermarket support is getting decent and keeps improving. This adds versatility. For a Crosstrek, one can find a turbo, performance airfilter, intake spacers, exhaust, armor, adjustable rally/offroad/commuter suspension, anti-swaybars, a rear locker, a winchmount, a receiver hitch, etc.

I have a regular Corolla now and I was at first looking at the Toyota C-HR but it doesn’t have one feature I want, a sunroof and the CorollaCross does. I also prefer not having all wheel drive as convenient as it is it’s a bit expensive replacing all of the tires at same time if funds are tight. I have had multiple Subarus and have actually preferred the Toyota comfort and drive. Had both a Prius and the Corolla. The Cross is the way I’m going

My wife and I both own the first Gen Crosstrek... love them! The only reason I'll consider selling mine is if/when the Crosstrek Wilderness package comes out. I'd say that for the price point and the quality, you really can't go wrong with either car. Toyota is legendary on their build quality... so if you are looking for a car to own long term (not lease), I'd only recommend Toyota, Subaru, or Honda.

I ordered a '23 Premium manual while I can still get it. "You can sell a young man's car to an old man, but you'll never sell an old man's car to an old man." In the hands of an experienced driver, a manual overcomes the drawbacks of the CVT, and higher ratio fifth and sixth gears would equal out the fuel consumption differences. Some of the reviews I have seen report higher than the EPA rating. Gas. Clutch. Shift. Repeat.

You nailed it as far as I’m concerned. I’m buying the Corolla Cross and I’m 71. Mind you I’m waiting for the Hybrid. Since 1996 I’ve had a 1996 Corolla, 1997 Tercel (for my daughter), 2000 Sienna, 2005 Echo, (had both Sienna and Echo at same time), 2008 Matrix ( hated Matrix), 2009 Yaris, 2010 Rav 4 (had Yaris and Rav at the same time) 2011 Sienna, (traded Rav4 and Yaris for Sienna. Sold Sienna and bought 2012 Winnebago ERA RV which I still have. Also bought a used 2005 Echo to tow with RV. Finally … Toyota made me an offer I couldn’t refuse and traded 2005 Echo and bought 2015 Yaris which I still have. I’ve struggled with getting a new RAV4 Hybrid or the new Sienna Hybrid. I definitely want to move to a Hybrid now. When I saw the Corolla Cross I got all excited because I’m own my own now and felt that the smaller vehicle might be more suitable for me. I’m just a tad disappointed that the Hybrid isn’t available yet. Hopefully next Spring? Still debating about keeping or selling the Yaris since it only has 70,000 kms after seven years. The longest I’ve ever kept a vehicle. If Toyota disappoints me in the Spring Kia has caught my eye with some of their features and technology. Especially the Kia Carnival … just need the Hybrid and it could be a contender.

I would note that the cross comes with D4S (port injection and GDI) which means the the intake valves will not gum up like on pure GDI engies like the crosstrek (this is usually is an issue after 100k miles). also the cross has a starting gear with its cvt that should give better longevity and better perfromace. I did find your comment about road noice interesing. ill pay attanetion to that if i test drive one.

I was kinda worried I might have made a mistake since the CorCross ticks off all of my boxes, and plus it's a Toyota - my family is a diehard Toyota family. But after seeing this video I feel much better knowing that I made the right decision for me and my family with the Crosstrek. Subaru handles much better than Toyotas, you should take a good test drive on both and take to a curvy road, that will make you not want a Toyota, then you have the resale value factor, Toyota flood the market with cars, Subaru holds its value because it is more appealing to the active lifestyle buyers and there aren't many used models available.

I have yet to see a current gen Impreza/Crosstrek get 8.5l/100km city in Vancouver. You might see 8.5 combined city/highway, but I literally never saw 8.5 city-only until the beginning of the pandemic when the roads were barren. And this is driving as fuel efficiently as possible on a well maintained car. Granted Vancouver is very congested, but the official city figure is unreasonable, it shouldn't take near empty roads to hit a city rating. Highway figure is more or less accurate.

When I was car shopping, every Toyota dealership I went to in my area (DFW) really put me off from every buying another Toyota. The Corolla Cross offers so little in terms of equipment vs the competition, like they didn't even try to put anything new or fun in it. No cooling seat option, no heads up display, no blind view camera, small screens, seems like someone at Toyota panicked as they didn't have a small SUV with AWD and said that'll do and brought this thing to market. Gun to my head i'd take the Subaru it has an actually capable AWD system if you do decide to go off the beaten path.

Not a fan of leds for many reasons. Here is a big one if things go bad once out of warranty: "Unlike traditional bulbs that can easily be detached from their fixtures, integrated LED bulbs are built into multiple electrical circuit boards. This means that it cannot easily be replaced if a bulb blows, especially not by the average person. Instead, the whole integrated fixture must be replaced." So if you have to have them fixed it means your vehicle is going into the shop, you are going to have labor cost, and the OEM units from Subaru here in the states are around $785 each. Halogens also produce heat which can be beneficial in freezing rain and sleet conditions. They are massively cheaper, and can be done by the owner. If you need brighter bulbs there are aftermarket options out there.

There are other factors that many overlook: 1. Insurance cost. Over time it may help to save more money than the delta in the purchase price. Subaru are considered typically a safer car than Toyota, and, therefore, insurance is expected to be less expensive. 2. Availability of the car. This factor affects your negotiation power. If the dealer tells you that the model you want, given the trim and color, you need to wait another 4 weeks, your negotiation power is compromised, because if you are willing to wait so long, you want this car desperately and you are not expected to have long arguments about the price. Subaru has issues with availability, Toyota does not have this issue. 3. Cost of service. My impression is that Subaru service is more expensive than Toyota one, but this needs to be checked. 4. If AWD is important factor for you then full time AWD of Subaru looks better performing and more reliable ad option.

I like Consumer Reports and mostly trust their opinions, especially when it comes to cars. However, I recently came across a youtuber (TheTopher) who drove the CrossTrek (which CR stated was the quietest in its segment) and the Mazda CX-30 (which CR judged to be so noisy they initially thought there was something wrong with their review unit!) back to back, giving a POV perspective, and I was surprised how much quieter the CX-30 was! I guess the CrossTrek may be quiet at a steady speed on the highway, but once even a little bit of acceleration is called for, the rumbly engine and the CVT conspire to make it very noisy, as I saw in the aforementioned comparison. I haven't seen a similar test for the Corolla Cross, so I don't know how it compares in that respect. At any rate, I'll be able to check how noisy each one of those 3 subcompact SUVs is after a thorough test drive when I'm in the market for a new car (those 3 would be the ones I'd pick from); nothing beats first hand experience since different reviewers evidently have very different opinions when it comes to assessing the NVH levels of each vehicle!
@nicholasdupre6916
@nicholasdupre6916 2 жыл бұрын
NVH is extremely important for that feel of quality and absolutely decides whether I am happy with a vehicle. Much more attention needs to be given to this aspect of a vehicle’s design by the manufacturers and the vehicle critics who are trying to help us use our money wisely.

I drove a new Corolla cross two nights ago. I don’t know how to explain the noises level, but it was in fact uncomfortably loud. You couldn’t pass cars on the highway without the engine roaring. Additionally, I tried going up a long, somewhat steep hill at 40 mph and she was loud. She’s only a 4 cylinder engine and almost the size of my 2008 Ford Escape (which is a 6 cylinder). Sounded like she was struggling, and it stressed me out (whether she was actually struggling or not, that’s what it sounds like, and it gets old quickly).

@@staceys1870 I went to dublin toyota. It was a fantastic experience. For a while I didn’t think it would happen. I traded in my 2017 Toyota Tacoma tdr off road for the corolla cross. As much as I really miss the truck with the price of gas and getting screwed over a few years ago I couldn’t afford the payments and the gas sadly so I didn’t really have any other choice. We got rear ended at 75 mph in a construction zone in 2017 and it totaled the truck I had. The person that hit me had no license, registration, or proof of insurance and the cop let them off Scott free and to this day I’m still paying for there actions😡😒. All I got was 750$ in compensation from the accident and 7 years of car payments. The money I got for my damaged truck I used as a down deposit on the new truck. For the corolla cross I went from 3 years of payments to another 5 years which really sucks but I am only filling up with maybe 20-25$ for a half tank of gas every other week. Last time I filled up it was only 17$ lol. It was awesome.

What's the deal with all of these cars now coming with standard tablet-style infotainment displays which stick out from, and above the dash line? I find them ugly, in the way visually, and hard to work with my eyes on the road. If I need to turn my volume down, adjust cabin temperature, or other controls, I don't want to have to look at a screen and work through menus. I want controls that are intuitive and can be adjusted without taking my eyes off the road. I recently bought a Crosstrek because it still had the manual controls for a lot of the items I wanted, and didn't have a popped-up display. All other cars I looked at had the popped-up display (HR-V, Corolla Cross, CX-30) and that pretty much eliminated them from consideration right up front.
