The Life Story of Dolores Umbridge - Harry Potter Explained

Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing ONE of the most hated characters from the entire series. No it’s not Vernon Dursley and no it’s not Voldemort- it’s none other than Dolores Jane Umbridge- Hogwarts High inquisitor, proud Ministry employee and HEAD of the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. More specifically-however, we’re going to be digging in to Umbridge’s past and uncovering her humble beginnings. Was she always awful? Who were her parents? Where did she grow up? Why was she so prejudiced? Sit back, relax and enjoy the life of Dolores Jane Umbridge.
Now, before we get started I just want to refute one thing: Umbridge did NOT hail from the Selwyn family. In the deathly Hallows, while serving as head of the Muggle-Born registration commission, Dolores claimed that the ‘S’ on the necklace around her neck stood for ‘Selwyn’.
"That's - that's pretty, Dolores," she said, pointing at the pendant gleaming in the ruffled folds of Umbridge's blouse.
"What?" snapped Umbridge, glancing down. "Oh yes - an old family heirloom," she said, patting the locket lying on her large bosom. "The S stands for Selwyn... I am related to the Selwyns... Indeed, there are few pure-blood families to whom I am not related....”
While this was probably more of a distraction tactic rather than a genuine claim- she still said it, and I want to make it perfectly clear that Umbridge was NOT related to the Selwyns- in fact, she wasn’t related to any pure-blood families...at all. The truth is- Umbridge was a half-blood,part of her existence that she tried very hard to hide.
Dolores Umbridge was a british half-blood witch born sometime BEFORE the year 1965. BEFORE 1965 is a bit vague, but that’s all we’re given, so she could have been 31 when starting working at Hogwarts, or 61- it’s quite unclear. She was a short woman with a broad flabby face, little neck, and slack mouth- resembling a toad. She was born in the British Isles to one magical and one muggle parent. Her family was quite small. Her father was a wizard by the name of Orford Umbridge, her mother was a muggle named Ellen Cracknell, and her younger brother’s name is never actually revealed. Isn’t it interesting how the department head for the muggle-born registration commission was in fact a muggle-born herself?
Dolores’ family and home life was already very dysfunctional, and so it didn’t help that her father, her magical parent, had very little ambition- perfectly happy to work as a floor mopper at the ministry of magic.
Later in life when Dolores worked at the Ministry herself, she was occasionally questioned about her relationship to the floor mopper at the ministry- a connection that she would vehemently deny. In fact, it’s later revealed that those who did question her identity, or her fathers, almost always had ‘nasty things’ happen to them:
“Nasty things tended to happen to people who asked about Orford, or anything that Dolores did not like talking about, and people who wanted to remain on her good side pretended to believe her version of her ancestry.”
I’m sure you can only imagine what a terrible and judgemental person like Umbridge would think of a floor mopper. However, Dolores wasn’t the root cause of all of the issues in her family, in fact- I think it was her father that ended being being the root cause of the families problems- as he actively blamed Dolores’ mother for birthing a squib- the SQUIB in question of course being Dolores’ brother- whose name is never revealed. Despite having very little ambition- having a squib child was a source of shame for him- and the main focal point for all of the families troubles. This was undoubtedly an unhealthy environment for Dolores to grow up in, and I have no doubt that it contributed to turning her in to the dysfunctional woman that she would become. I’ll continue discussing her family later on, but for now let’s jump into Umbridge’s earlier years and her proper introduction to magic.
Like so many before and after her, At age 11 it was time for Umbridge to start planning to head to Hogwarts- “the finest school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world”- at least, according to Hagrid.

We never heard of it and I think it’s a bit lacking in the series. Imagine if at the very end, Harry, now true owner of the elder wand, repaired the school with a single spell before destroying/putting back the wand in the grave. Wouldn’t that have been cool!?

The only comparison to Harry is Thomas Riddle who is what would happen to Harry had he been sent to the Slytherin House without any role model or people to care for him. Dumbledore didn’t care about young Thomas what he was doing while being at school nor did he have anyone caring for him. After years of abuse he finally got power while he had nobody to care for him and show him the way. And became Voldemort. Harry got loved and cared in school and felt like home, and even when he was going back during summers, he may not have been loved but his family stopped abusing him so much out of fear (ex they gave him a room)

Riddle despised the very idea of all of that. Plus one thing that needs to be recognised is that riddle was just neglected Harry was downright abused

@@abizerzohair6592 Again, Tom was put in another house where power and ambition is treasured more than anything. There is a reason the “all gone bad” wizards were coming only from that house. Tom didn’t have any guidance and been protected by his teachers, most of them at least, guided etc, while the friends he made in that house, if any, were also ambitious and power driver wizards and witches. Remember that they actually go still young at Howgards so there is still time for character development. On the other hand, Harry, who was actually supposed to go to Slytherin, was put in Gryffindor and he made two best friends, Hermione who was supposed to go to Ravenclaw for her cleverness, wit and learning but chose to go to Gryffindor, and Ron who was supposed to go to Hufflepuff for his loyalty and dedication but also chose Gryffindor. The three of them, together with the guideness Harry received from his teachers, helped him develop his character and make the choices he made later in life. Even with great power, he never made a huge mistake like killing someone, and he broke the most powerful wand when he had it in his hands. Had he gone to Slytherin, his story would have been completely different.

Wow. It never crossed my mind that Professor Umbridge was in Slytherin House. Even though she grew up to be as evil as Lord Voldemort himself, I automatically assumed she was in Hufflepuff, due to her matronly appearance & demeanor. Because then _he_ would have been removed from his position, probably by the school's governors (Lucius would've been all too happy to comply), and Umbridge would've been given even freer rein than she had already. And before you ask, no, there's no way they could've forcibly removed Dumbledore, he would've left voluntarily. Remember, the recklessness of his youth taught him that flaunting his power based on his own morality wasn't the way for him. I know he fought against Aurors in that very same book, but that was a different situation; he was being arrested on suspicion of sedition against Ministry. If he received notice of his termination through the usual legal channels, he'd have complied (though he still wouldn't have let them arrest him)

When you oblviate someone they only lose their memory of what the caster chooses. For example Hermoine only took the part of his memory that included seeing Ron as he was meant to be sick

The effects of the Memory Charm can be worked past, if they're not too severe (that's what St Mungo's is trying to do currently with Lockhart). Not only that, I imagine that severe other trauma can break through the charm, and Voldemort surely tortured Dolohov for letting the trio escape

If she's a half-blood, then she's related to all of the pure-blood families. Also, "derive" doesn't mean what you think it does. Try the verbs "conclcude" or "infer."

She had no idea that a 15 year old Harry could do a Patronus. She didn't think it was a win-win, it was just a win. Why Dumbledore or any of the witnesses who heard her confession of a crime worse than murder and didn't tell the Ministry I don't know. J.K. must have needed her for the Muggle Registry.

Little Miss on bridge has gotten what she deserves multiple times if it wasn't for the centaurs and a couple times she's bested by Harry and his friends and it also doesn't help that eventually she was eventually punished for her actions over the years and sent to the very place she must likely sent many unfortunates muggle borns is quite fitting though that she play this place there cuz her soul was tainted by the darkness that was in Voldemort so it's not surprising that in the end she ends up either broken or even further twisted I only question is what happened to her brother and mother and also is is there a possibility that she killed her father

Such a pity that by the time Umbridge was sentenced, the Dementors were no longer in charge of Azkaban. Instead, Shacklebolt has it guarded by Aurors who frequently were replaced with mainland Aurors. This means that Umbridge does not suffer the same punishment others have, and she gets, once again, a lucky break. It is a pity JK has not found a more fitting 'reward' for this insufferable character.
