In preparation for freezing temperatures and winter weather in NJ I installed all season tires (Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 in 285/35/20) on satin black T Sportline TS5 wheels (20"x10").

T sportline & Martian wheels are the best out there right now. It’s good you changed the OEM summer tires, anything below 45 degrees they do. It hold up well. The model S also has rear camber issue causing that shredding on the rear tires. I actually like how it looks that these stick out wider than the OEM wheels. Looks really nice 👍🏾⚡️

Thanks! After a year and over 20k miles, I'm still happy with the T Sportline wheels. They have held up really well and I still think they look better than the 21" Arachnids. I posted an update at 20k miles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnykZ6J9nqyKbLM . I estimate that the tires could go another 20k miles (I rotated them after I made the video).

Great video and really a perfect time for me as I am ordering a Plaid and was thinking about the winter set up...going with the 20's non staggered seems to be the right move and now I wont buy the Arachnid rims and go straight for the aftermaket...really thanks for doing such a good video

I've got the same car ('21 Plaid in blue) and are replacing the same 21" Arachnids with the exact same 20" TS5 square setup. This is the perfect video for visualizing the before and after while I wait for mine to arrive. I was definitely shocked to hear about the efficiency hit considering the lighter wheels and the all season vs performance tires that come on our car. Granted there is more overall contact with the road with the 285's all around, but that should be negligible. New tires definitely have a greater rolling resistance which I think you're already seeing start to improve. I would've hoped that the lighter wheels with a harder compound by the same manufacturer would even out the larger contact patch and less aerodynamic wheels, but doesn't appear to be the case. As you know, you don't by a Plaid for the efficiency, but still sucks to go backwards. Looking forward to your updates!

It's great to hear that this video was helpful for you. I, too, was surprised by the change in range, but I think it primarily had to do with the new tread. I've since put 10k miles on the wheels and tires, and my range seems to be around where it was with the Aracnids. I'll be making a 30k mile update video on the plaid in a couple of weeks - I'll talk about the TS5s.

Thanks for the honest review. Before I watched your video, I was thinking of the same wheels as they look great. I was hoping to replace them on my Model Y Performance but I am having second thoughts. With my 21" Uberturbine wheels, I get betweeen 260 - 320 when driving conservatively and no more than 70 mph. I lreally like the looks of the TS5 wheels so I was hoping for better range. I haven't seen anyone really provide long-term results, just short-term results after a quick swap. I really like the looks of the Uberturbine wheels but they are heavy so I was hoping to have a win/win in purchasing the TS5 wheels. Too bad they don't have aero wheel covers for longer trips. Thanks for the really honest review.

Thanks for the feedback! That is a great idea - I'll do some follow-up videos on the effects of the wheels and tires on range (I'll capture data on a more consistent basis). It has gotten significantly better since the initial install (I've driven about 1300 miles on the new wheels and tires) - I averaged 351 Wh/mi during my 80 mile commute this morning. I'm hoping it will get back down into the 320 Wh/mi - 330 Wh/mi range.

@@TheLifeofJoeLee I'm buying these today. I'd like to know the range difference now, as I was hoping it would be MORE efficient than my Summer Arachnids. I put winters on, but now i'm just ready to trade to a 20" for tire availability as the EXACT same thing happened to me while traveling (tread separation on driver rear PS4 at...19k miles). I don't want to keep the Arachnids and swap for winter, so I'm buying these and selling the winter setup w/ Arachnids. I don't really need winters, but the Summer tires took a beating in my mild-35 deg average winter. I could buy the 19s w/ AS as a separate pair, or buy these wheels with AS and sell the Arachnids. The range would improve for sure with the 19s, but how is it with these TS5s?..... Wrote all of that, then went down a couple of comments and saw a reply...Hmm. This sways me back to the 19s. I'm getting 350wh/mi - 370 wh/mi on my winter tires (Pzero Winters).
@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee Жыл бұрын
@@carsbykev7037 What were you seeing for efficiency with your summer Arachnids? My observed efficiency is based on highway driving (on the faster side). My efficiency changed by ~10% with the all season set up. With that being said, I'm ok with the change in efficiency given the improved cold winter grip and the look of the wheels (especially the offset where they come out a little more).

@@TheLifeofJoeLee 330 wh/mi summer, 355 wh/mi on Pzero Winters. That's on a regular 220 mile one-way trip during the winter at 40 degrees. My average wh/mi on the winters went up from 350 to 375 after about 5k miles on the winters though (20k total miles on the car when they went on), so there's a bigger penalty than that trip showed. The school run is averaging about 400 wh/mi vs 350 wh/mi prior, but my driving varies a bit depending on how many people I want to pass quickly in the AM (my kid enjoys the roller-coaster ride, wakes her up).

@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The efficiency has improved by about 50 Wh/mi since the video, but temperature is likely a factor too as it has since gotten warmer. I'm seeing around 340 Wh/mi for my commute which is 90% on the highway. The ride is slightly better than the with the 21s, but it wasn't a night and day difference. The road noise on the highway with a non-EV tire is noticeable, but wouldn't stop me from buying these tires again. I've put about 10k miles on the wheel and tire set up. I'm planning to provide a 28k - 29k mile update within the next 2 weeks. I'll pull the wheels and tires off to show the tire wear.
@JetFire9
@JetFire9 Жыл бұрын
Those look great, and so much nicer to have 20" tire options, but I couldn't tolerate going from 330 to 380-400 in wh/mile. That is a huge amount of range loss. Any update on the range improvement in the last 2 months? Wonder how much better it would be with a low rolling resistant, EV-specific tire?
@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee Жыл бұрын
My car's energy consumption is now in the 350 - 370 wh/mi range for my commute which is 90% highway. I've put around 6k miles on this set up thus far, so the tire are definitely broken in. In the spring when I'm ready to put my OEM wheels and tires back on I plan to capture energy consumption data with my current wheels and with the OEM wheels within a given week so that temperature won't be much of a variable. I'll make a video on that. I chose a performance oriented tire to have grip for acceleration - if that is not is not a significant factor, I think a low rolling resistance, EV-specific tire would be the way to go for 1) better range and 2) less tire noise (it is noticeable on the highway).

@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee 9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, since I'm running all season tires on the TS5s, it would not be an apples to apples comparison with the 21" arachnids with summer tires. However, these wheels are lighter that the OEM wheels - if given the same tires, they should be a performance upgrade. I haven't noticed any change in performance once rolling. I have a little more slip when launching due to the tires.

How have the 21" arachnids held up for you in NJ (Northern, at least) potholes? I'm on the fence whether to order with 19's or to go with the 21's (which def doo look nicer).
@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee Жыл бұрын
My Arachnids held up fine on NJ roads. Knock on wood, I haven't bent them. The 19" Tempest wheels don't have the rear tire wear issue that the 21" Arachnids have. One of my rear tires wore through the cords on the inside edge after 18k miles, and the other rear tire was close to wearing out too. If you are in NJ and plan to drive the car through the winter, I'd recommend getting the Tempest wheels with all season tires and get a set of 20" aftermarket wheels with sticky tires for the warm months. I personally love the look of the 20" Tsportline TS5 wheels on my car.

@TheLifeofJoeLee
@TheLifeofJoeLee 8 ай бұрын
The Tesla Model S Plaid Track Pack comes with 20" wheels so these 20" TS5 wheels should be compatible with the Track Pack brakes. I've put 18k miles on this wheel and tire set up - my car's energy consumption has improved and is back to where it was with the OEM wheels. I'm thinking the rolling resistance of the brand new, non-EV tires was a factor in the energy consumption that I had initially observed.

I noticed a difference in ride quality going from the 21" Arachnids to my current 20" TS5 setup. I could imagine the 19" Tempest wheels and tires would be even more comfortable. The height of the tire side wall makes a big difference in ride quality. The 21" set up was firm. I didn't consider it to be harsh but I recall my first impression of the car was that the suspension felt much firmer (with the dampening in auto) than I would have expected for this type/class of car.

I appreciate the feedback. I had originally ordered these wheels in satin gray but changed they order so I would get a different look from the factory wheels which are gray. The black looks nice in person (I like the look) but I agree that they get hidden in the wheel arches. My last Tesla (Model 3 Performance) was dark blue metallic (same blue as the this Plaid) with silver wheels - I liked the contrast. Unfortunately, these wheels do not come in silver. Hopefully this video will help people with their decision on whether to buy these wheels, whether to go with 20" wheels in general, and which color to choose.
