Heheheh, reminds me of the traffic in Tropico 3, if you don't set up your roads very well. They don't quantum tunnel through each other, but if the roadblock lasts long enough, some of the Tropicans will decide "screw this, I'm walking the rest of the way!" and the car will just vanish. (I think in that game, there's an upper limit to how many cars can be on the road at one time, so when it hits that limit and needs to spawn a new car, the one that's been waiting the longest disappears.)

Was just about to come and say the same thing. The core problem with this city, and most of the cities he fixes, aren't the roundabouts or lack thereof, but the lack of highway connections and connections between districts. I've seen many cities with 0 roundabouts that had 90% traffic simply because everything was interconnected with plenty of options.

Tom Mass He has said many times before that he doesn’t want to completely rebuild the cities. Many of the fundamental issues aren’t addressed because they would require a rebuild and many people would not like to do that. The exit before entrance has been addressed many times, same as road hierarchies, and intersections too close and yet people still send them in. Most of the fixes are trying to make the city work with what you have.

As an editor for Waze, I have a lot of experience with the "main" and "feeder" types you were talking about. In the business, so to speak, the "functional classifications" of large main roads are "arteries," and the medium roads are "collectors." Usually, each category is split into "major" and "minor" sub-categories. Everything else is either a road or a freeway. Waze has its own terms for the road types in the app, so anything that's a collector gets called a primary street, whether it's major or minor. Major or minor arteries are called major or minor "highways." But you have to be careful because any highway (US highway, state highway) is at least a minor highway, even if it's only officially classed as a collector.

A mistake I always see people making is zoning along the main roads. If you want to have zoning along the main roads, use side roads off the main one that run parallel to the main road, and zone off of that. Also, I thought you were going to put in an oval about at 25:00.

The reason is that they follow the tips (or at least some of them) without understanding why... The one and only principle you should follow is "don't cross the streams": every time you have a junction, you should built it so you don't cross the traffic fluxes. Once you do that, you will hardly have less than 70%.

At 10:50 the technical terms about the lane Hierarchy : Your main road that is 2*3 lanes is called artherial road and serves to get peps from one district to district, with relatively few intersections as to keep the flow going. Then one Hierarchy level down you have your 2*2 lanes of collecting roads.. Smaller, they cross one district and distribute people from the artherial to the smallest local streets. I had commented a few times about this on other fix your cities (but the comments got a bit burried ) It is the next technique that players need to understand once they have figured out your usual tricks about roundabouts and lane mathematics and lane management. Once more this is a very good video thanks a lot and I am very happy to see you implement that street and road Hierarchy that I personally really like to see pulled off with success

I have been building a city using your tips and a few of the mods you're using... and plenty of roundabouts. It was working brilliantly. Then I left it running for a while and it was a huge mess. I located the source of the problem: Pedestrians were going out of a park area and directly to a highway road, and unpacking their cars in the middle of the busiest sliproad. Some of them even just bugged out and were stuck in the middle of the road. Never seen that happen before. Park fence fixed it right up though.

I’ve got a problem with my city. I’ve been building it for the last few weeks and population is at 80,000, traffic flow has always been at 84-87%. And now randomly I have a problem when I make slip roads onto my main highway, I do the lane mathematics and put those noodle things as I should (like Biffa does at 19:55) but all the traffic on the 5 lane highway just piles into lane 1 (the far left lane as my game is on the left side of the road). I’ve done the mathematics and the noodles thing with slip roads before and no issue, just this one and it’s dragging my traffic percentage down to 78%. A real head scratcher.

It's party down to the weird AI in this game. The drivers are morons. If all that traffic is going through the next exit lane, it won't make a difference if they spread out and there isn't anything you can do in terms of lane management. If some of the traffic shouldn't be in that lane and isn't exiting, then simply banning lane changing for the last few junctions should force that traffic to get off that lane.

In fact letting the traffic comming on the roundabout go through give more chances of keeping going and not stopping (the reason why roundabouts exist) or instead remove the priority signs so the junction restrictions acts as a priority for traffic on the roundabout. You should do the test to see which set up clears traffic on the incomming the fastest.

@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines It clears the roundabout the fastest for sure, but when the exits are freed as well turning back on makes more trafic comming into the roundabout (see Flabaliki's videos on his new city) and the roads clear up faster because more vehicules go through the roundabout. By just having at least one of the right lanes going right, there is no way a roundabout can clog itself. All the roundabouts in the city fixes were caught in the traffic jams that you fixed. But i get your point. I have made more roundabouts in my 2nd city (123k population) and all i did with them was the lane arrows. Nothing else needed so far. Anyway your traffic fixing skills are great (sometimes even better than Sam Bur!) Keep it going :D

Just be aware that he fixed the roundabouts first and when he prioritized main street, he accidentaly made the people on the roundabout to give way. Something to look out for. Also, check the taxation. he left it running before the last cinematic part at 28:27 ... Oh well.

You know, the city I live in (in Kentucky) has ONE roundabout. And it was added within the past 5 years. I remember it was a big deal. People didn't know what to think about it, or how to use it. Everyone was nervous. Including me. XD But now I love them! Wish we had more.

Our county has two, and they're both nonsense. Should never have been changed. There are instances where a roundabout or ovalabout is the best solution, but my feeling is that they are horribly overused in many cases. They should be used to eliminate stop lights and stop signs that are too close together, but never to replace a perfectly good intersection that is already working just fine. I also want to see roundabouts large enough that they can be taken without slowing down. If drivers have to slow way down in order to take them safely I'd rather they just stop, look both ways and then proceed when they can see that the traffic is clear. Yielding just doesn't feel as safe, especially when traffic can come at you from your blind spot.

I keep thinking about a REAL-LIFE city that created a distance between both directions of a highway and added 180 turns making several oval-abouts, all in the same plane, with very few crossings and... it worked! Beautifully! Brasilia was very fond of that tactic on some highways, and they work really well. It creates a 3rd lane on the ovalabouts, and keeps 2 lanes between them, purposelly mismatched to the lateral roads. The ramps never clog up, and the traffic flows nicely.

There’s the arterial road, the 6-lane roads, then there’s the collector roads, the 4 lane roads and lastly, the local roads, they are the 2 lane roads with houses built next to it. The Arterial roads usually connect to a highway or a national road. The collector roads connect the arterial and the local roads together.

Great video! It's actually fairly normal around here to have long stretches of 60-80 kph roads out in the country, which most locals will actually still use if it's just a couple minutes slower than a highway route, because it's a much more relaxing route to drive, and you have a less variable delay. The game just doesn't do this, sadly.

Just a quick tip i realized not too long ago. See all those roads with trees? Where are all those people parking? That town had no parking spaces at all. :D I do realize they just put their cars into their pockets, but having some parking space sure helps a bit with traffic. All those low density green districts don't really need the trees all the way through. Just put them here and there to heighten the land value a bit.

Fully connecting that junction with the two roundabouts just west of the river would've fixed a lot of the issues with the other junctions. Lots of traffic from those other junctions were just looking to get into that district, but the junction has no exit.

One thing I'd suggest is, that there are roads coming to / from a roundabout to a T-shape highway junction. Here those roads have three lanes, but two would be enough, as they are going to / coming from just two directions and would not have to merge at that point together from two to three.

Biffa! I love your videos. I'm not a gamer at all, but decided to get Cities after watching your videos. Your personality, humour and logical mind really make these a pleasure to watch. Just got two tiny questions though, I don't seem to have all the types of road you have in my game, are they a Steam Workshop add on? Also, how can I provide heated water to my city? I don't have the ability to add the boiler at all? and my hot water icon on the right is red. Any ideas? Thank you again!

It's ridiculous that without using mods many of these seemingly simple fixes are impossible. The game should implement some of these traffic control mods.

The lane-connections in the roundabouts are a major problem. Allways give a clear end-node for a lane and avoid lanes leading to multiple exits. since this will stop traffic from spreading out and cause some hickups when cars start to criss cross and other cars - which wont even have to criss cross with traffic - wait behind them ...

And even the best possible traffic circles have their limitations, which get solved by means of a bypass tunnel... The other headshaker is coming off the freeway into a roundabout out in the fields, just to need to backtrack to get to town, where some rational transition roads/offramps would give much *cleaner*, more direct traffic patterns.

road speeds in the network extension 2 mod are in accurate national road is about 80 kph and 3 lanes one way should be 50 kph even worse that some of the highways lack lamps but its a good mod overall

So far in my cities I applied all the tips you told us Biffa. Sadly the results are quite different each time. Roundabouts (and other forms) are not always the right solution. I found numerous places where a simple 4way junction with trafficlights made the traffic way better then a roundabout that is clogging up, even with the rules in place. Love the vids tho!

Still feels like preventing lane switching at intersections would force the cars to take the correct lane instead jumping across 3 lanes, meaning you don't have to say what lane goes where.
