I was surprised to hear that this was Willem Dafoe's first film with Tim Burton. Feels like they should've worked together ages ago.

He's worked with Sam Raimi, though, and Sam's style, especially back in the 90s and early 00's, had a lot of strong similarities to Tim's work. Using Danny Elfman frequently too probably helped with the vibe.

It might be possible for Beetlejuice to reject a summon, particularly from those he rather not deal with. Once he commits to a summon though he has no control over over being sent away.

Dafoe was great in this movie. I really enjoyed his character in this film. I was expecting him to be a villain psychotic character like he is as Green Goblin especially with the line "WHERE'S BEETLEJUICE?!" in the trailer it sounded like a line from a villain. He really surprised me in this movie. I guess he's tom cruise if he got his head cut open doing a stunt
