Before this movie came out I always had this many theories in my head about what kind of person beetlejuice used to be before he died. I always thought maybe he was a con artist, a rapist or even a seriel killer before dying. The reveal that he used to be a everyday grave rober is not just a fun way to subvert expectations for me but also explain what kind of person beetlejuice actually is. He isn‘t a pure evil monster, he is just a selfish scumbag that got lucky to gain toon force powers.

To split hairs, Burton moreso paid homage to the gothic horror films of Mario Bava, Hammer, etc. in this particular scene, especially the likes of Bava's "Black Sunday" (1960), but Bava was also a pioneer in the giallo subgenre as well, with films such as "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" (1963), "Blood and Black Lace" (1964), "A Bay of Blood" (1971), etc. (though, in fairness, some of Bava's films arguably incorporate elements of both of the giallo and gothic subgenres, such as his 1963 anthology film "Black Sabbath" and his 1972 film "Baron Blood").

Halloween Facts: 1- Lydia refers to Beetlejuice as a demon, but he is actually a chaotic ghoul. 2-The afterlife in Beetlejuice is not heaven or hell, but purgatory. This explains the train station scene: some souls go to the light, others to darkness, and in rare cases, they can return to the living world. 3- In the Beetlejuice world, you can only be killed again by exorcism or by being forcefully summoned by the living, not by being eaten by sandworms or other ghouls. 4- In the Beetlejuice world, ghouls are human spirits capable of negatively interacting with the living. Ghouls can interact with demons and humans, but no demons have yet been shown to interact with humans. 5- the name Delores means pain in English.
