Ben, I've said it before and will say it again, gladly: You never cease to impress me with what you can do and what you know. From a disabled, single-mom, old lady in Canada who has never lived on a homestead and knows very little about them (aside from what KZbin channels have taught me, lol) I cannot imagine doing what you do without a family such as yours. You, Meg and the boys have that go-get-em attitude, are so smart, healthy, resource-friendly, faith-based and family-oriented. When I realized what this video was about - cutting boards from a log - I thought "hmmm, maybe not for me". But man, this was so amazing and satisfying to watch, lol. I could go back very easily and watch it again (and likely will). Good on ya, young man, for not only trying to make do with what you have, but figuring it out, doing it well and taking that knowledge and sharing it with others. Chainsaws are NO JOKE. You are very skilled! I absolutely love your hand crafted garden beds!!! I Bought my husband a Husqvarna at a yard sale. Yikes, chain went flying off and nearly decapitated him. Tree branch took the hit and saved his life. I now have chainsaw PTSD.

Many years (MANY) ago, as a little girl I used to make mud pies with the saw dust instead of dirt. My mom didn't like mud everywhere and my dad built boats. I had an endless supply.

Hiiiiiiii….from Ohio…do you intend to make boards to cover your barn or build on and maybe make a large food storage room with freezers, generator and extra canning supplies…a ventless wall heater works well for maintaining the room just above freezing…I store my dry goods in Lowe’s food grade buckets and I throw a few bay leaves in around the items to keep creepies out….like meal bugs….just a thought…

The sawdust-chips are really good to put in the beds where there are root crops. The potatoes come out cleaner and larger because it aerates the soil and makes more loamy. I saw this on a KZbin channel, I believe it was Good Simple Living.

It's a beautiful thing to see how you cut your own boards. I'd add the shavings to my compost pile. I do mine with total soil contact so it breaks down faster, plus that way I can add large piles of veg matter, including trimmings from shrubs, then too, a big load of fall leaves, & when needed & can easily turn it with a garden fork, getting some soil into it, at any time, & also add torn up cardboard, non glossy printed junk mail & newspapers in layers with food scraps, & any green materials, ideally before a big rain, or water it by hand regularly.

Great video! My husband has been working on building a woodmizer. With a house remodel underway, expansion of our garden, and future homestead plans, being able to mill our own lumber is a game-changer.

I've seen on a "reality" series show a trapper in Alaska utilize a fairly simple lightweight aluminum frame "mill" and chainsaw to build a log cabin utilizing basically the same method...but with much more precision cutting and much faster...if you ever would need those attributes added into the mix. Put the compost as walk ways , or in muddy areas to soak up water , also keep a pile as mulch for around plants ..!! You can mulch beds over winter , it will break down and feed the soil

i use my old vertical band saw then i made a rigid frame for it to go horizontal... a few angle iron lengths, box sections... welded up to be a stand and the sliders i used an old plastic chopping board... works great...

If you put those blue tarps underneath where you are sawing, you don't have to rake up the shavings. You can just pull the tarp to where you want the shavings. Only then do you jave to shovel or water. If you are putting the shavings on walkways, you can even just drop the shavings as you pull the tarp.
