I went from being a very social person in my teens and 20s to being a near hermit in my 50s. I'm generally disinterested in most "popular" topics (pop culture, sports, boats, cars, golf, etc.,) but I can make small talk and seem to do so comfortably. Anyone who only knew me casually would rate me as a 10-out-of-10 extrovert. But all that is just a persona I had to learn to put on at an early age so I could navigate this world full of aliens. Starting with my own siblings, I could never understand how I could possibly be related to these humans... apart from the fact we look similar. They, and most of the world, just seem to have a completely different thought process. I've never understood how people can be so self-important, mean, petty, easily offended, proud and duplicitous and be so unaware of how ugly it is. My feelings of alienation morphed into more than a little bit of contempt over the years, seeing "the damage done." As events in the world have unfolded, I've become less willing to hide that contempt. To save everyone (especially my dear wife) the embarrassment of my filter failing, I find it's best to keep to myself for the most part. I socialize best in very small doses.

For me it seems to be mostly shame and fear of judgement. I'm constantly walking on eggshells around others and trying to manage how they perceive me because I'm embarrassed of who I am as a person, even though there's nothing to actually be embarrassed about I guess. It's draining.

Happy Tuesday Doc! Absolutely awesome video and you're just really fun to listen to! Other than the one about smells which I guess occasionally I have that one too this video just described me pretty perfectly. Being an INFJ-Empath is difficult enough at times but the life experiences I've endured on top of my natural personality have added to my introversion. Oh yeah, before I forget, I thought I'd bring up a couple I didn't hear you mention but I go through... I'm a severe chronic intractable pain management patient and when I'm really hurting I tend to self isolate at times without even realizing it! The other one is being a book nerd and/or library hermit! You're right about going digital and how that can help a lot. I agree with you about the constant ghosting thing. That not only sucks and hurts when you have begun to care about people but it makes you wonder if you're ever going to find anyone else who believes in long term stable relationships built on a solid foundation of honesty, reciprocity and transparency... Stay Awesome Doc!!!

Most things I do currently I do alone. Bike riding the same because I am safer in not riding with people that are not as careful as I am. And, today for example, I went to a local resevoir and into the area that is mostly quiet, and an area where I observed and listened to water flowing and the trees, sky, etc that is in nature not in a city. And without the necessity of speaking with anyone which is distracting from enjoying the mostly quiet outdoors.

I've had a history of ostracism and distrust that has lead to social withdrawal. In school, I found that in order for people to talk to me, I could never be myself. No one would ever like me for me. If people give a gift (even my mom,) they expect something in return. I used to ask for gifts or videogames, and stopped because I worried about both the impact on my family's finances, and them weaponizing this gift against me to get expected behavior. If not, they would say they wouldn't support me. They will kick me out as soon as I graduate from school. What that looks like for me now, I got a gift from a coworker and was instantly paranoid. Now if someone says they love me, I don't believe love exists. The sole reason anyone would love me is because there is something I offer to them. Whether it be financial benefit or the talent I possess, or something else. I don't trust people. And I justify it to myself that this behavior and thinking is rational because it keeps me safe from people. But maybe there is a side of me that wants to be proven wrong.

I’m truly sorry to hear that you’ve been through such difficult experiences. It’s completely understandable why you would feel distrustful and wary given your past. It sounds like you’ve faced significant challenges in finding genuine connections and trust. It’s important to acknowledge that your feelings and reactions are valid based on what you’ve been through. Trust can be incredibly difficult to rebuild once it’s been broken, especially multiple times. It might be helpful to speak with a mental health professional who can provide support and strategies to help you navigate these feelings and experiences. You deserve to be surrounded by people who appreciate and respect you for who you are, without any expectations or strings attached. Rebuilding trust takes time and often requires finding the right people who will support you unconditionally. If you’re open to it, exploring these feelings with a therapist could be a valuable step towards healing and finding a more positive perspective on relationships and trust. It’s okay to protect yourself, but it’s also okay to hope for and seek out the kind of relationships that can prove your doubts wrong. You deserve to experience genuine love and trust. Also, I’d be grateful to hear what you found most useful from the video. Additionally, if you're interested in learning more about all things mental health or want to explore my video library, you can use my AI: allceus.com/AskDocSnipes

What about if you're an elitist?? - I find most people not worth my time due to them not being trustworthy, honest, considerate, clean, etc....
@LE-gs9mo Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call that elitist. I would call that person an idealist (one caveat: unless said person in question truly thinks that they are better than everyone/thinks the world revolves around them). You shouldn't penalize or criticize yourself for placing a boundary between you and others' poor behavior, life choices, etc. What is that statement that most thought leaders say? Find others you can look up to and learn from, and get to know them. Become friends with them, if you can. I believe it is possible to grow in this way. From one idealist to another, I feel your frustration and pain. It just requires even more responsibility on our parts to get to such a place, with such people in our lives. P.S. Please know that I am still aware that all people are flawed in some way. We will always let each other down in some way. But that should never be an excuse to not strive for better, and ultimately, excellence. Perfectionism does nothing but harm. It's toxic to the person who practices it, and to the people who observe how it poisons life. Perfectionism isn't excellence. They are very different. In the end, it all comes down to attitude. The attitude of the heart, mind, and soul. Attitude can make or break a person, a relationship, a marriage, a business, a church, a community, a nation.... We are each responsible for our attitudes. I think an attitude of idealism/excellence can reflect a deeper respect for yourself, for your Creator, for your fellow man, and for the whole world around you.

Take three. Definitely have a lot of these except from an extrovert with social anxiety. hypersensitivity and everything else but regardless of that I read a few articles that people in their '40s often distance because mortality is a reality and they reassessing their values and socialization reemerges again in their 50s and '60s. I also read somewhere too that pushing people away or isolation is linked to early onset or dementia. I don't know what source I read that from. I am curious though well it is good to have boundaries and isolate or you know to recharge when does it become a pathology where it's unhealthy and how do we stay within the bounds of keeping healthy and keeping a strong mind and not completely isolating. ,🙏❤️

the hardest thing about my introversion has been people who pretend to be my friend in order to "help me out of my shell." i remember telling someone in my college dats in the early 80s that my need for other people is not as great as his need for other people. he had a very sophisticated reply to that. it was a single word starting with b and ending in t and it does not spell "biscuit"

I don't think I fear crowds or can't handle them. I can if I was forced to. I think I just hate them. I just don't see the point. When I think about being around a crowd I get angry at the idea of even having to put up with that. I'm not entirely sure why that is but I think part of it is because I think it's a waste of time. I can't imagine what I'd have in common with most crowds so why would I be around them? Just thinking about it now makes me want to punch something.
