In regards to the part about people not wanting to walk in puddles in Park Ave / Strand so they don't need waterproof shoes. NYC standing water can be deceptively inches deep when crossing so it may be necessary to have some waterproofing.

still, it won't help if the uppers on a tan pair get soaked. its might seep in through the crevices and the leather will certainly stain in that dirty sewer infested water!

Two great videos on Allen Edmonds. I dearly love my bench welt Park Avenues, but now I'm going to try a pair of speed welt Wooster loafers. Just as I got ready to pull the trigger AE knocked off 25%--my lucky day! Keep up the good work. Many thanks. Edit: picked up the Woosters today. Couldn't be happier. I can really tell the difference with the Speed Welt. Much lighter and easier on the feet, which works better for a casual shoe.

I think this is genius by Allen Edmonds. A Goodyear welt just means 360 construction that can be resoled. By creating different kinds of welts inside the Goodyear welt construction, AE will reach new customers without selling out by outsourcing to third world countries.

Very interesting and informative video Jon! I find it sort of amazing that Allen Edmond’s showcases the 4 styles of Goodyear Welts on its website, however; the video merely shows pictures of various examples of the 4 welted shoes. Without any text in the video its impossible to determine what the message (purpose) of the video is. I learned more in your interview in 12 minutes than I have watching AE’s video a handful of times. The confusing AE video is consistent with information on its entire website. There is a lack of consistency as to how AE provides info on its various shoes. For example, there doesn’t appear to be a consistent style to describe each shoe in the AE online catalogue. Some shoes describe which welt is used, while others do not; some shoes describe the type of leather used in the upper, again; others do not; some shoes might identify the last used, while others are mute on this topic, etc. Sorry about the rant, as I love AE, I’ve got over 15 pair of shoes/boots. I also purchase other AE products. Just today I received 2 high quality leather belts which are excellent. It’s just that I think there are some things (very basic stuff like communications and quality control), AE can improve upon. Getting back to your video. I think many people will find your video, not only interesting, but quite helpful for the reasons mentioned above. Great work! ...Ed

If i understood correctly, Bench Welt is the traditional Goodyear Welt STITCH and Storm Welt is not Storm Welt STITCH but Bentch Welt with special leather and additional material for better protection against moisture. From what i have read online, Storm Welt STICH is a completely different stitch than Goodyear Welt stitch AKA Bench Welt by Allen Edmond.

There's really no reason to change the welt during a recrafting service unless someone wears through the sole into the welt. When AE puts on a new welt, they essentially punch in new holes onto the uppers, which is why their website say "Generally, we can Recraft a pair of shoes about 2 or 3 times maximum." i suppose this is good marketing and they can sell more shoes. But for me, I know if these shoes are well taken care of, they'll last a lifetime.

Allen Edmonds are right. People generally dislike the stiffnes of the good year welted shoe especially when not broken in. Not to forget the Blake Stitch leather shoe is way more flexible than a goodyear welt leather shoe. The AE Speed Welt is made for walking and caters for brisk walking pace whereas the bench welt slows you down. So it depends on your lifestyle. The Speed Welt is also easier on knees and back as a matter of fact. Preventing back pain is of course more important to most people than a custom feel with pain. This does not take a genius to figure out.

He caught himself at 4:36/4:37… leather…. errr, leatherboard. That is not a stacked leather heel. In my experience, it chips apart and you get divots in the heel with the leatherboard material. I love my AE, but I prefer stacked leather and I replace the leatherboard with oak leather when I change the top lift on mine. Just one man’s opinion however.. lol..

Love the company, but the soles from the factory are wearing down way too quick. My Cole Haans are impressively durable, but 1/4 the cost. AE is better in so many ways, but for sole durability they are the worst I've had.

Potato Sir They don’t sell welts, they sell shoes. It’s just part of the shoe construction and invisible to the customer. The names are irrelevant to the consumer.
