Allen - I got a quote recently for a 24KW boiler of £3400. The plumber called and He quoted £2400. I am a retired electronics engineer so I decided to investigate the problem myself. The fault was the pilot stayed on but the main gas would not come in. I fixed it by replacing the 315ma fuse - about 24 pence.

Allen I’m not in the trade but have been mechanical engineer most of my life apart from when I was about 5 to leaving school I helped my dad. He worked for NWGB spotford road Liverpool left the Navy as a engineer and started with the Gas board with company motor bike and side car. Then upgraded to a Vauxhall’ viva years later. I still have his original gas board bag and some of his tools but I used to help him with jobs he would do at weekends and just as open vent central heating was being put into houses. He was very fussy and used to say do it right first time or don’t bother at all. Reminds me allot like your self the type of person you would want to fit a boiler for you , Keep your videos going Allen hopefully when mine is due for renewal I give you a bell can’t put a price on quality of work and safety.

I swapped a vokera compact for an easyheat last week, dropped the pressure through the prv lifted it off and dropped the new one on the same bracket and pipes, flue out the same hole then cut a filter in to comply with new regs. They already had a co detector. The system was squeeky clean as i've done stuff for them on the system for the past 3 years and there was an existing nest. Under 470 ex vat for the boiler, filter and some inhibitor and i charged £990 (825 ex vat).Only materials i used was a handful of sand cement and 2ft of 5 core 3 hrs done and dusted including going to pick the boiler up from the merchants so i made roughly 340-50 for 3 hours work. Tell me i'm not charging enough and i'll rip you a new arse. I charge what i see is fair not what i think should be the going rate. Those days are well gone. I have 40 odd years experience doing this garbage and could do it with my eyes shut but i can honestly say i've never intentionally ripped anyone off. Btw heres one. 1978-9 im a 3rd year apprentice and we are doing a bbu swap from solid to gas on a gas board job (in the days when the gas board were a good company). The woman next door came in and said "im looking for a new boiler too can you give me a price". My tradesman said you go in and see her so I went in and hadn't a clue how to price it. She wanted a baxi W2 (a baxi wood as we called them) and said the gas board gave me a price of £1850 or whatever it was. Me being young and thick said i'll do it for £1600. Now considering you could buy a brand new car for around that price, albeit a chevette or escort ,it was still a lot of fuckin money. I ordered the stuff through my boss (cos he was a decent cunt) and done the job with another apprentice on a long shift on the Saturday (including brick up and plastering). Went into work on the monday and said how much do i owe you. £400 and whatever it was. Just short of £1200 for a days work in the late 70's I paid the apprentice £100 for his shift (weekly wage was around £20) and he was severely pissed off that i bought myself a 2 year old cortina with my share. Thats an example of how much rates and prices have fallen. But that was different times.

‘Under value the trade’?? What do you mean? They charge what they are willing to do the job for....perhaps charging more than that might appear to be unethical to them. Also the amount of time the same jobs gets a uplift for being in a nice area surprises me too..

I live in London and I paid £2500 labour for a system boiler installation with a megaflow, and all new rads with new pipe work on a 5 bedroom house. The workmanship was good too with no corners cut as I had British Gas check things over. This was in 2015, so prices may have increased slightly due to inflation. Reason I commented, prices do not always correlate with quality.

The heating industry has fallen into the undercutting trap. On the other hand the Sparkies have kept their prices and their standards. The Sparkies are right. I admire you for working to a good standard Alan and I enjoy your videos very much. I don't think the heating industry will recover its status unless they do like in Germany and that is restrict the purchase of gas appliances and gas carrying parts to Gas Safe registered individuals. It will never happen and rogue installs will continue. We've all seen them, and its easy to tell the difference between an indifferent install by a registered installer and a rogue illegal install. A good install, like the ones you show us Alan, is a joy to behold.

@Mark Sesum I refer electrical jobs to two first class, but expensive electricians. They are swamped out with work, but I get some nice calls from the customers who are always delighted with the quality of the work, and the people. I should say I live in a relatively affluent part of the country.....if a bit out in the sticks. It's always harder in the built up areas or working for some landlords who don't want to spend anything so I do sympathise. I go to by far the most expensive optician round here.......not because I like chucking money away, but because of the reputation he has built over the last 30 years. He had a marketing strategy when he set up, and I'm not sure enough tradesmen do the same. I'm about to retire so I have time to reflect on these things. Best of luck with your new direction.

Hi Allen, good to see some actual quotes, what about doing a video on quotes for other types of jobs, oil-gas etc. I did a back boiler to gas last week, nightmare, thought it was a 2-3 day job, turned out to be a 5 day job+, as problem with regulator that Phoenix had to change, then 2' thick chimney breast walls that my core drill had a nightmare getting through, so hugely under-quoted. But , hey-ho, everyday is a school day.

Hello Allan I agree with most things you say, you are very honest when you say you are probably never going to be the cheapest quote with those prices. However you get what you pay for My quotes for those jobs would come in a bit cheaper (not by a great deal though) for the one above the cooker. I would have refused to put the boiler back in the same place as well. I would have suggested moving the cooker. It is not a good place to put it next to the back door anyway. The wind could blow out the burners etc etc. I dont think I would have taken his word it was going to be moved either lol. I would have needed to see some pretty strong evidence it was being moved or allow me to move it, also there was other things needing attention, electrics, brickwork etc it all takes time.. The Biasi well that was just a pig of an installation and I think you gave a very fair price for that one. I would have been some where close to your price. It is always better to give a price so you know you can comfortably do a good safe installation and allow yourself time to do it. There are so many installers/companies allowing ridiculas targets for installs these days. However where I work there are so many Plumbers prepared to cut corners (flushing, filters etc) and most people would be surprised how many are still unregistered. They will always be cheaper because they dont have the registration fees and costs we have. Also some Landlords sometimes put a lot of pressure on Plumbers. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

I loose a lot of boiler installs because my quotes are high yet i earn a lot less than the guy that just chucks the boilers in.Hes out and in 6 to 8 hours no chemical flush no magnaclean and untidy finish etc. Im there several days before the install introducing chemical cleaner to the sys and probably twice as long on the job because i actually care.I always tell my customers that there house will be left in the same state i found it if not neater.

When I had a new boiler fitted 3 years ago I got a decent quote from a Gas safe engineer. It was not the easiest job there were 2 fitters and an apprentice. They expected it to take 2 days but it over ran to 3 days as I had an addition of 2 rads and there were problems connecting to my solar hot water system. When it come to paying he was a bit shy about saying he had under quoted but I had already withdraw another £500 and he was happy with the final payment. I think I got a bargain and when it was serviced by a different company they said I had an excellent insulation.

I recently had a Baxi 830 with Nest 3rd gen thermostat and new 7m 22mm gas pipe from meter (I lifted all flooring and floorboards for access to gas run and all pipework). This was a system conversion, with all tanks/old pipework removed. £2200 in Birmingham. All notified and fitted in a day (a long day) by one fitter 👍

@tamz2tamz2 Last time I checked, my local independent plumbers merchant doesn't sell concentrated malt extract and brewing sugar. Mind you, I do have a hot water cylinder out the back of the garage and I'm wondering if I can convert it into a still.

Hi Alan I to see too many jobs made to fit a low price. If you have enough in a job then no problem sticking to quote but if I find something I couldn't have known about I would discuss with customer. I love neat work but it does cost if you want attention to detail. Just over in Hebden Bridge, not as experienced as you on boilers because I got side tracked into renewables but winding down now so going back to boiler jobs.

As a consumer £3k does sound a lot of money, but for the work involved including brick work it’s a hell of a lot better than leaving it where it is what a decimal boiler install that you had to go to there. I would never of accepted that above my oven. However, that price beats British Gas quote of 4 1/half thousand pounds to replace my boiler that they put in 15 years ago but a company like British Gas are Robbing Cowboys

To help yourself out. Setup a spreadsheet for each task. Ie boiler change, list EVERY single tasked involved in doing so. Put a column next to it for estimated time. Ie collect materials, unload tools, isolate gas, tightness test, etc etc etc. There will always be tasks you miss out if you just guesstimate. Experience will allow you to collate data to see averages for all these individual tasks. Imagine you go to do a tightness test and there's a leak on the gas carcass or regulator. Work out how these anomalies affect your overall timings.
