Eddie is probably the nicest, most supportive guy out there. When Alice in Chains were opening for Van Halen during the "F.U.C.K." tour, Jerry Cantrell was there during a sound check and he was going "Aw man, you have the most awesome stuff man!" And Ed went "Wanna have a go?" and handed him his guitar. Well you'd have to be galactically stupid to say no to such an offer. Cantrell played Ed's guitar through Ed's amps and just wailed away. And went "Thanks man, it was a blast, too bad that I can't afford any of it." The tour wraps up, the band members go home and Cantrell is met by his landlord "Ah finally, now you can help me get rid of this stuff which was sent to you!" A huge crate containing three Peavey 5150 full stacks and two Musicman Eddie Van Halen signature model guitars had been send to Cantrell, compliments from Eddie.

I saw that tour and 'Alice In Chains' blew me away. Cantrell is a force to be reckoned with regarding his tone. Incidentally, one of those EVH guitars was stolen from Jerry in 2001, it was the Ernie Ball gold-top EVH model. Two guys tracked it down and returned it to Jerry in 2018.

I strolled in to local music store in Hanover, Mass. called Crossroads few years back to try out a new rack mount processor they had there. I pulled up on my motorcycle and could hear screaming guitar riffs coming from the store. I walked up and the door was locked and my buddy that owned it let me in. The owners of the store were good friends with the band Extreme and Nuno was out here with Dweezil because he was producing Dweezils new album at the time. Anyhow I got to hang there for a good 2 hour with the 2 owners, Nuno, Dweezil, their bodyguard and a dude named Chuck that was always there and listen to these 2 guitar animals trade riffs back and forth and learned alot of stuff in those 2 hours and it was an experience I'll never forget. ;)

Dweezil states that he doesn’t know how Eddie got in contact with his Dad but Steve Vai recently said in one of his facebook live chats that his roommate was the one who gave Eddie franks contact info by mistake, not knowing it was Edward Van Halen on the phone with him and Steve freaked out because apparently Frank didn’t like anyone giving out his phone number without asking him first. That’s how Dweezil first met Eddie.
@Ibaneddie764 жыл бұрын
Actually the way Eddie ended up at Frank and Dweezil's house was Eddie met Steve Vai first and Steve being the young hired gun for Frank told Eddie that he could introduce him to Frank. Eddie called Steve Vai's house but he wasn't their and his roommate gave Eddie Frank's number witch was apparently a big no no and Steve was worried that Frank would be upset with him but when he was about to call Frank and tell him what happened Frank called Steve first and told him Eddie was already at his house and would he like to come hang out with them and he did. He said it was an amazing experience because they just sat around listening to music and of coarse busting out the guitars and jamming. Steve even mentioned Dweezil being their and being a kid. Imagine your dad is Frank Zappa and you get to hang out with him, Steve Vai, and Eddie Van Halen and listen to them bullshit and jam all night. No wonder Dweezil is such an amazing player. Not to mention his insane guitar collection, he has a Hendrix and an EVH? Good Lord! By the way I heard this story straight from Steve's mouth so it's legit.

Great sounding guitar. It barks, pops, sizzles. How Eddie met Frank and his son and the rest of his family was through Steve Vai (who was playing with Frank at the time). Steve Vai was supposed to take him over to see Frank, having met Eddie back stage, and was going to introduce him (arranging it with Frank first, as Zappa didn't like people showing up). Eddie phoned Steve the next day (who wasn't in) and so got Steve's flat mate to give him Frank's number and then went over himself that same day, so desperate was he to meet and jam with Frank.

Dimarzio X2N was one of the only real hot replacement pickups available back then. Seymour Duncan's were just getting popular, but were relatively unknown, so it was a Dimarzio Super Distortion, Bill Lawrence L500 and L500XL, Duncan Distortion or JB (and Duncan's were relatively unknown in 1981-82) - those were about it for high output replacement pickups. It wasn't like today where you have a bazillion choices for replacement pickups.

@Rufus T Firefly The Invader came out in 1983. This Van Halen "Rasta" Strat would have been from from late 1980 to 81. I had an Invader for a couple of months in '84 after seeing Jake E. Lee with one in his white Charvel... I hated it. It was harsh, way too bright... and didn't sound anything like Jake's killer Marshall JCM 800 tone on Bark At The Moon. I started using a JB (SH-4), and later the JB Trembucker (TB-4), and occasionally the Duncan Distortion (TB-6), and the Duncan Custom V (TB-14). Seymour Duncan also made a short-lived bridge pickup call The Stag Mag... that had dual slug polepieces instead of the traditional slugs on one coil and screws on the other. I think Duncan stopped making The Stag Mag, except for special order around 1985-86. And the Invader is ugly and sounds like shit... that's why hardly anyone uses them. Regards 🎸

As authentic as it gets... Ed’s finger grease in the fretboard and Jizz holding together the neck joint...

GODDAMNIT!! I wondered what the hell ever happened to that guitar. Sadly this was at the height of Eddies' drug days and explains why he painted it this way. He used to carry necks and bodies around just to have backups in case something went wrong but sadly they usually became black and white strats with the usual red in between. I know that has his favourite motif but the black and white Charvel that he repainted later was my favourite along with the unchained guitar. Sadly neither now exist in their original form. Eddie is always experimenting but I wish that he would start over with a new guitar rather than butcher the ones that he played and are now legendary. Thanks for sharing. This is one of the few things that no one knew about.

Was the playing from around 10:52 to 12:57 authentic enough for Mark? Almost ruined but thank god Dweezil is not only one of the nicest and coolest MFers on the planet but a amazing player. Listening to his stories and the playing just put the biggest smile on my face.

Just for anyone that wants to know, the body is a 2 inch Mahogany Body, since Ed thought when he put the Floyd on that the guitars sounded “thin” so he ordered two bodies, the other one becoming the Rude.

I was lucky one day at the Birmingham INTL Airport. he was flying back in from playing golf. I had him sign a copy of 5150 everyone else had just random stuff. He looked at me and said at least you have a Fn cd. bahawaha. It was a great day and the show later that night was awesome.

Imagine being able to play your Father's killer music. Music that will survive the eon's of time. 400 years from now they will study two Classic Rock era acts: The Beatles and Frank Zappa. add..... A son that Frank Zappa said would eclipse him in the future of insane guitar shredding and musicality. A he IS. There is nothing he can't play and read, any speed, style, time signature tone Dweezil has it going on. Amazing.

The pickup looks to be a Dimarzio X2N which came out in 1979 and it's a pretty popular pickup around old hair metal bands like for example Jeff Labar used to use a X2N in the nights songs era of cinderella. Rest in peace Eddie Van Halen and Jeff Labar.

He before used the MightyMite high-output pickup (for more treb content without overdrive) and this guitars pickup was modelled after that but with an Alnico instead of Ceramic magnet... It later became the Floyd Rose pickup (another rarety)!
