They have half the budget but twice the balls. They embraced the advice and ideas offered without letting pride get in between . The result is and amazing accomplishment.

Finally, a simple, lovely structure, built with a small budget and much work by the family. It is a pleasant alternative to the massive, super expensive, modern monuments to homeowners' wealth and egos. Nice, deserving, hard working, resourceful family, as well. Lets have more of the same.

This is a great case study of what a self-build entails. The budget is always too short, the enthusiasm is high, and if the marriage survives all of the decision-making and arguing, then the design will evolve and a home is the product. The details and embellishments can be phased in over time. I've been working on my DIY house for 8 years since moving in, and it's still a joy.

What a lovely couple - so humble and curious. I was really hoping that they would achieve what they were after. And great that Piers could guide them so well with the design. My favourite episode of the show.

What a wonderful result - the architect, Piers and Kieran's sensitivity to the couples financial restraints and their assistance to them invaluable is how it all appears on the footage & is super supportive. I am so happy for the couple.

I really like these programmes where people use inititive instead of their wallets and this looked great, I thought of the big framework at the beginning, so "great minds think alike" ha ha! That chippy made a really good job of the frame, but bricks on the floor, bad idea, the kids would break their necks. £55k for that, brilliant! Lets have more of these and less of the pretentious cash flashers.

One of my favourite builds ever. The realism of financing coupled with the reusing and resourcefulness by this wonderful couple is truly inspiring. The home is lovely, comfortable and not that modern day repetitiveness of 'fad-styles' and 'should-look-like' builds. My hat is off to this couple for what they have achieved - and also to the support by Piers and Kieran for helping them realize their preference in a home while recognizing their budget. I sometimes find that one or both often present a little "architectural snootism" in their ideas of what people should do but in this case, I think they were quite helpful.

This is just beautiful, so smart and an all around success. Using his own labor saved a lot, using the old house planks and bricks saved money too, but also added so much character and basically the look they were after in the first place, the integrity. An all around success.

One says it's wonderful to see the full height of the structure from the inside and the other says your losing floor space. I think with a small space it's better to go for floor space. I would go with ten foot high ceilings though.

I absolutely Love with a bit of a house made with the planning is not exactly to my taste and neither is some of the furniture but everything that is exposed recycled is it right up my alley. I think the outcome is fantastic but I really wish he would have gone with brick flooring but at least I hope he used that on the whole outside garden

Bad idea to run the stairs straight. Upstairs you have to walk around the stair to reach the rooms behind. Wasted space. The floor is much better than the bricks, and the bricks are used niceley. But now treat the wood to be fire proof ? Could be a problem.

It looks a bit like living in ones unfinished garage but it's much more developed than that. It has insulation, plumbing, electric, and lots of wood. For 56,000£ or about $78,000 at a guess its an incredible feet. Is it for me, no ,but I have thought of building a post and beam from gluelam beams and some stained ply in portions of the building. A simple stamped & stained concrete floor with in floor hot water heat should be good enough. Internal or external framing is always a debate but continuous insulation is never debatable. The concrete board on the exterior of their house should last past their children's life time. It is just a good durable but inexpensive product. This inexpensive house is built to last.

What I'm not seeing in these videos is the idea of expandable homes. Start with something like kitchen and living room with a sleeping loft and a bathroom. Build for cash on hand. When some additional funds have accumulated add a bedroom/whatever. Design the house to be completed in stages over years.

The problem is most of the couples featured on the show have multiple kids. They can't just build a sleeping loft and cram everyone in. They need multiple bedrooms.
