I led a Bible study with a friend at my church before the lockdown. After waiting a month for the mandate to be lifted we started meeting again...at the church...face to face...without masks. God emboldened me by verse 1 John 4:18, "Perfect love casts out fear." I was committed to studying each week in obedience to God. Now to be fair, I live in the country so policing and enforcing the mandate was more lenient. Nevertheless I was determined to attend Bible study...no matter the cost. Incidentally, neither one of us caught Covid. :) I will pray for James, his family, and his congregation.

I would say that God is referring to perfect love casting out unreasonable fear. Reasonable caution is a sign of wisdom. If you are hiking on the side of a mountain, you are likely going to exercise reasonable caution so as not to be injured. This is reasonable fear, resulting in intelligent caution. Likewise, since we are experiencing a virus with an incredibly high efficiency of contagion, it is likewise intelligent to wear a mask to protect oneself and others. Reasonable caution and reasonable concern for safety and physical survival probably don’t fall under the kind of fear that scripture refers to. It is great to walk in faith, but folly to walk in presumption.

It recently occurred to me that I, as a Christian, need to keep myself aware of what’s going on in the world (news, politics), not just immerse myself in the Bible and listening to sermons. My inclination has been to pretty much only do the latter, but then I can’t know enough to interface effectively with non-Christians. So I’ve learned we Christians have a duty to keep one eye on the Word of God, and the other eye on the world. It’s all about balance.

I did a study a few years about on the word ‘Conscience’ in the Bible. It’s very important to note that Pastor James is obedient to his conscience, meaning: he’s listening to the Lords voice in his heart, and testing how it aligns to the word and with the leaders who walk with Him. Very beautiful! Abrahams faith is remarkable in that he believes what he heard from the Lord, and as spirit filled believers, we are marked by our hears that seek to listen and obey his voice by faith. There may be others, like me, who feel convicted to obey the mask ordinance, I will obey that conviction, but my heart longs to agree with Past or James, and I rejoice, that he is also obeying his conscience. Like a beautiful harmonious orchestra, we can overcome the enemy and show the Lords glory as we each do our part to listen and obey by the word and faith. And as we honor conscience in ourselves, I believe we can better elect government leaders who will also be faithful to their conscience. A value of the conscience is what dispels manipulation tactics like what we saw in Ravi - we need to learn to honor conscience, and what is call internal boundaries to honor the conscience of others, and speak truth to align it to the word.

The USSR's constitution promised freedom of religion, but they got around that by using zoning and other local civil laws. Technically, an approved church was allowed to meet - except not during certain hours or paperwork had to be filed with everyone's personal information, or certain "safety codes" had to be obeyed. This way, the leaders could pretend to not be persecuting while shutting them dowm. Civil laws and regulations, especially when applied selectively, can certainly be used to persecute.
