Carrol O'Connor was a fan of The Dead Kids, who were the Bowery Boys in the earlier years. It's how Billy Halop got into AITF. He was a Dead End Kid. But Leo Gorcey aka Slip Mahoney was the one who mastered the skewed words. Watch a Bowery Boys film or a Dead End Kid film. You'll see the history.

So do I. I saw "The Draft Dodger" episode when it first aired (yes, I'm that old). Archie's exact words when he exploded were "I ain't talkin' about that war. I don't want to talk about that Goddamn war no more." I was shocked when I heard it, as that kind of language on television was unheard of at the time. I don't know why it's been edited in these clips to say "rotten, damn war."
@bumfromph3 ай бұрын
@@IrishChola7 I'm that old too [I was 11 then], and I remember it exactly the way you remember it: He originally said "God damn" on the original primetime broadcast, and I still remember the chills it gave me to witness Archie's anger on a level that had never been seen on the show before. Ever since then, the line has been dubbed [in addition to his lip movements, you can hear a slight difference in the audio too]. Now here's where things get weird: Over the decades, I've tried to come up with info regarding the changing of the line. I've seen several interviews with people who were directly involved with the show, and they've all said that the line was changed BEFORE the original broadcast. Archie DID say "God damn" once before on the show [in the Heat Wave episode, I think], so it shouldn't have been an issue here, considering the serious tone of this episode. However, they say that at some point it was realized that the episode was going to air Christmas night, which was the only reason they re-dubbed the line. So who knows? My memories remain pretty sharp, but I've also found out that I've misremembered certain things from when I was a kid, and I'm certainly not going to question people who were directly involved with the show. I guess until video of an original broadcast turns up [such things do exist from that era, but they're rare], we'll never know for sure!

I believe that episode aired in EST had the original line, whereas episodes aired across the country had already edited it. Interesting how both 1st and 2nd pilots of AITF, Archie is explaining how the phrase "God Damn it" isn't vulgar, but the very first aired episode, that piece of dialogue was rewritten entirely.
