I dunno. Maybe I handled that wrong. People are just acting like this is some kind of rare, desirable, high value machine that we are going to depend on to make a living. In reality it's just a lump of old iron that was headed for the crusher. It might still end up there! Somehow, to a large group of viewers, us cutting a few corners to figure out if this thing is even viable and worth spending any time or money on is worse than just letting it rot in a field like it has been for almost 2 decades. Love it! ... can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a diesel run for a few minutes without coolant just to test a repair with no issues EVER! Being a compression ignition engine it produces much less heat at idle than a spark ignition engine ... all of these keyboard mechanics out there 🤦🏻♂️

Mad Man Marine you’re right about that! Gotta love the “experts”. Lol
@joshdrexler87734 жыл бұрын
Diesel fuel ignition temp is 410°F. Gasoline burns about 100°F hotter. Also plenty of unburned fuel in a dirty old style diesel to absorb cylinder heat by vaporizing. And much heavier iron castings, too. Taken together, those things are going to make this engine run cool. Also very dirty, very toxic fumes for the operator sitting on that old board seat, and very heat and fuel inefficient. But I doubt that diesel's higher cylinder compression has much to do with it. Fact is, moving or not, this machine is still basically junk. Gotta love the operator's safety roll cage. But of course real men don't need no stinkin' safety roll cages. That's why in America the death rate for men over 45 has been rising over the past 20 years. Stop calling everyone haters, just because you hate them. Because we all know that if you put up videos on KZbin you know everything, just like the comment "I saw it on TV". Many have replaced that mentality with "its my favorite guy on KZbin so it MUST be right". Both are warped thinking. There are some commenters who know a LOT more than KZbin video makers.

Nice CGI work! If I didn't know better, I'd say it was running, making smoke, making noise and even moving. It would fool most people.

must be a road flair stuck inside the exhaust pipe for smoke effect lol

Right. You can barely see the strings moving the model.

Gotta like those old machines. Simple, honest tools that wore out a couple or thee generations of operators. Not much for comfort but still will get things done. I believe the serial makes it a 1952.

Good for your brother and you, the Allis Chalmers HD-5 engine runs, the machine can move and the hydraulics work, so internet applause for the both of you. I'd hope that it finds a good home, whether with you or someone else that will use it.

I worked for a guy in the 1960 who had a 4-71 GMC diesel in a GMC truck that had a cracked block, and it leaked coolant into the engine. Solution, oil in the radiator. It worked, but ever so often, you would have to drain some oil out of the crankcase and pour it back into the radiator. We hauled some heavy equipment with a float on some back roads. On one hill, the driver and I had the doors open ready to jump when we pulled the engine down to lots of black smoke, and very few RPM until we topped out. We stopped the truck, let it blow a little, drained some oil out of the crankcase, poured it back into the radiator again, and went on our merry way. GMC/Detroit diesels sure put up with a lot of abuse. The guy ran Allis Chalmbers HD16s a HD20 that used a torque converter that ran diesel fuel through the converter then into the engine. I was only about 18 at the time, not smart enough to know better, but it was fun.

The Trolls missed that the driver's seat was burnt out 😰. Old engines are all miracles, or just have loads of clearances and compliance for this lubrication stuff, or lack off, burnt Carbon can be a lubricant??? Great vlog Wes, Stay safe all thanks for sharing.

My mom's dad had his own excavating business and he loved the HD5's with the 2 cyclinder Detroit my uncle refers to that as a GMC truck motor he loved them because they were so easy to work on and were tough as can be

Well I guess they were truck engines, but they were used in everything back in the day.

I certainly do hope that no serious damage gas occurred to your engine. I would not wish bad on anyone. I truly loved my HD-5. Amazing low end torque! Oil out the exhaust was the first symptom right before mine came apart. I was just trying to get it out of the pasture and onto trailer so that I could haul it in for radiator repair. Mine did not fair well...at all. Still have the engine if you need parts...... Luckily, I had a pump skid with same engine handy.
@WatchWesWork4 жыл бұрын
I think the crap in the exhaust was in the pipe he used to build it. But the engine seems solid. Good oil pressure. Has decent power when warmed up.

That has to be very satisfying, to get it to maneuvering like it's a new machine :) the loader seems a bit jerky but those valves might clean up after you start using it. All in all great video series on that old girl
@somerandomguy38684 жыл бұрын
Gotta say it's running pretty good especially considering how you " destroyed it " bringing it back to life, I think the real thing here is how it ran at all, it only sat forever, completely left for junk, what do people expect, great job and love the luxury accomadations

I was a little uneasy at first watching it run without coolant but it's obvious you guys grew up around and work on machinery every day and know when an engine is getting hot. Also, it's not mine. 😁 What did give me the willies though was watching your brother start it with ether. I'm guessing that's what it was. Maybe okay while priming the fuel lines but it shouldn't be needed afterward. I hate that crap. JMO though. That slobber out of the pipe is an exhaust antirust feature included with every Detroit at no additional charge. I promise your DIY exhaust will outlast the crawler. You probably know this but watch the blower seals. If they go bad the motor can feed off the oil and air and go Ziiiing!! ;-) To those freaking about about the WOT revs: A 2 cycle Detroit has a max RPM of 2100 more or less depending on injectors and timing. At max throttle they sound like they are about to explode when in reality they are turning the same RPM as a 4 cycle at high idle. Nice video guys. Very enjoyable.
