That Victorian edging is soooooo beautiful. Why don't companies cast edging in black cement with a lovely rim like that?? They look like stones, or even rope. I just love it. Proud of you for seeing their beauty and saving them. You Brits do gardens like no one else on earth 💚

Hi Jessie, inspired by your onion poem the other week, I got a little creative myself. To celebrate the end of what has been a very successful first summer season of your new polytunnel and also to say thank you for 25 episodes, I wrote a limerick. Nothing spectacular, but I hope you'll like it. 😃 #plot37is25 . There once was a girl from Plot 37 whose massive tomatoes tasted like heaven. She grew them herself it seems in the polytunnel of dreams where hot sweaty days are a given.

Fox, Badger, Rats, Mice, Wild birds, butterfly caterpillars, red mite, white fly, black fly, aphids, blight, we have deer, bunnies, groundhogs, raccoons and opossums here, etc. i am going to copy you by covering my beds this spring with butterfly netting. I have weather envy. We never get super cold, but we do have a couple or three weeks total of -20° C and lots of snow. It hits around end of Nov and piles up until March. It’s great insulation for bulbs like garlic etc but we can’t access the garden spaces. To garden year around would be a dream. You got me through last winter and I thank you. The green around here is simply my envy colour…. 🇨🇦👍❤️

Thanks Margaret! As you say "A place to do what i want in my own way..." - That's really it with allotments, isn't it. Part of what i love so much about engaging with gardeners from all over is that everyone has a different way of doing things and a different approach, its a wonderful thing. And really, anyone who tries to tell you there's only one right way in a garden, doesn't understand gardening!

Huge congratulations on your first 25 eps. I have really enjoyed your content and quite look forward for Tuesday evenings. As we are on opposite sides of London I'm doing things about the same time as you. Thanks for the heads up on the Broad beans. I dug my root trainers out today and I wasn't sure why, but it just seemed important. Now I know. I too am just starting to move stuff to the poly tunnel to over winter for the first time. Just kicking off some All Year Round lettuce and chard seeds, some spinach and I'm experimenting with some no dig beetroot seedings planted in mid August to see if I can get the poly Tunnel earning it's winter keep! I'm also going to root around in the seed box for anything that might survive in the winter poly tunnel as the tomatoes are retired. I'm thinking Kohl Rabbi, Pak Choi and radishes. If it works great, if not my chickens will take care of it.
@JessieatPlot374 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Hahaha, subconscious root trainer retrieval! Love it! Yeah, so we are doing about the same, i'm really interested to see how well stuff goes in the poly. I think my list is currently - chard, spinach, beetroot, turnips, pak choi, lots of lettuce and a few cress type things (Iranian cress, mustard leaf, dragons tongue...etc) and I have high hopes but yep, like you say, nothing ever really goes to waste between 'allotment soup', the chickens and the compost bin!! :D :D

Another great vlog to watch. I do look forward to Tuesdays :-) Certainly is the season for jobs and like you I have a long list of things to do. Took down a Wendy house / shed that my daughter used to play in when she was 5 and now she is 15 she doesn’t so it was just consuming space. So it is now no more and in its place is a new area for producing vegetables next year. I have used the wood from the shed to creat a raised bed somewhere else - always good to be resourceful. Have a lovely week and fingers crossed we don’t get too much rain.

I planted some 'Winter Gem' lettuce seedlings that I sowed about a month ago into my greenhouse border a couple of days ago and today I sowed some more lettuce; this time 'Lojoit's Green Cos' which it says on the packet you can sow in September or October, as well as in spring - these will go in the greenhouse next to the Winter Gem in a few weeks time. I still have a few tomato plants ripening fruit and some basil, as we've not a had a severe frost yet - it was down to 1.7c one day last week, but the basil survived fine.

#plot37is25 On my plot I've noticed that most peoples sweet peppers and chillies have not done as well as usual this year; only small sweet peppers that haven't ripened, my chillies are only just turning red - they are in a greenhouse in pots and some in the border soil also. Watching your half hour allotment videos is better than a lot of the stuff on TV in the evenings!
@JessieatPlot374 жыл бұрын
Thanks Duncan! That's a lovely thing to say! Yeah, its been a very odd year for so many things hasn't it, chillies/peppers included! The friggatello long peppers were amazing for me this year, so prolific but all the others have been so so slow! Also had a couple of sweet peppers that have basically done absolutely nothing. Very odd. Fingers crossed for 2021, i guess! :D

@@JessieatPlot37 I can only think that after a hot spring in April and May, June and July were pretty rubbish and below average here in the north west of England; cloud and rain, that has certainly held back the tomatoes and also peppers and chillies - September was sunnier than the 'summer' months of July and August - at least around the Manchester area. And yes your videos are way better than a lot of the stuff on TV!

Hi again Jess, I was looking at your rain butt and thinking " looks a bit low to me (considering you have raised beds in the poly tunnel) I would have raised it up 6 inchs so the tap was at least the same level as the beds, just a thought (you probably where going to do that anyway). Your plot looks amazing (tidy) probably because two young lady's run it. Have fun out there kid.
@JessieatPlot374 жыл бұрын
Hey Graham! Yeah, i ummed and ahhred about the water-butt because on a gravity fed system i would need to raise it up but i'm reluctant to do that because i fear that if the same idiots who like to periodically stab the polytunnel see a barrel on legs, they wont be able to resist pushing it over... its a shame because it would make sense but it can only go along that path where its quite vulnerable. So i've been investigating solar-powered pumps designed for exactly this purpose and have found some that are not that expensive so i'm going to give that a go! If it doesn't work i will have to think about a way to raise it up but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it! :D

@JessieatPlot374 жыл бұрын
Hahah, thanks Don! Yeah, i was originally going to do a gravity fed system but like you say, i would have to have the butt raised which i don't really want to do. Among other reasons if the idiots who stabbed up the polytunnel come across a barrel on legs they will be unable to resist pushing it over, i would guess. lol/not lol. So i've found someone who makes reasonably priced, solar-powered pumps for exactly this situation! No idea how well it will work but i'm going to give that a go!

I wasn't a fan of the flimsy plastic deep root trainers when I tried them for the first time this year, but I can highly recommend the Containerwise hard plastic trays. They have a huge hole at the bottom you can stick a gloved finger in to eject the plug. Just fabulous, and will last forever. Also, #plot37is25! I've watched every single episode!!! Keep going, throughly enjoy watching your plot progress through the seasons. containerwise.co.uk/product-category/deep-propagation-trays-350x215/

Tufty McTavish Absolutely agree. I bought ten a while ago and never looked back

I've just had a look at them, they look really solid! I might check them out. I've got 4 sets of root trainers and the first set i've had for six/seven years and still going strong! But yeah, you do have to be a little be careful with them. The best i've got are polystyrene ones that my mum has had had for 30+ years and although the edges on a couple of cells have broken, the majority are perfect! But thank you, i might pick up a couple of these containerwise ones for spring!
