All The Stations

6 жыл бұрын

It's the 16th August, and having stayed the night at Corrour we head north to Fort William, and then get the boat over to Skye, meet local Mark who talks Gaelic to us, and then gives us a ride to the Kyle of Lochalsh, so we can get the train to Inverness.
Oh. And there's the matter of a small viaduct at Glennfinann too ...
Mark also taught Geoff the various ways you can say "All The Stations" in Gaelic too, that's in a separate video here: • Video

This is true for every episode, but I just want to emphasise again how much I'm enjoying this series. A great railway and travel documentary that would give Michael Portillo a run for his money. Beautifully shot as always, but of course it wouldn't be the same without the two great hosts who guide us through each step of this adventure. I think I can say this on behalf of most people watching: thank you for embarking on this trip for us.

What I find totally mind blowing is if this series, All the Stations, had been produced by the BBC, the only difference would be cost. Production values would be little different, but the number of hours produced must equate to millions of pounds in BBC budgeting terms.

You probably know this by now but one of the viaducts you crossed in this episode (Loch nan Uamh Viaduct) before Arisaig has now got a plaque on it commemorating a dead working horse and cart which fell into a collumn during construction and the workers just left it and encased it in concrete. it was local legends for decades but only proved at the turn of the century.

Funny that you should mention about the Caramel Wafers because my cousin has returned to the UK this summer from Bangkok, Thailand. He left about 13 years ago to go work in China but managed to get a job working at a school in Bangkok and he met a Thai woman who he married and has now separated from but joining him in Scotland is their 7 year old daughter Ellie and she's just getting used to the UK and Scotland but of course what's one of her favourite things? You've guessed it, Tunnocks Caramel Wafers. So, I can understand Geoff's reaction to Vicky's suggestion about the taxi driver helping himself to their TCWs.

Really lovely video. I've travelled most of the line to Wick/Thurso but never done any of the lines in the North West of Scotland. It's clear I've been missing out! It looks such a wonderful journey that I must do it. Interesting diversion over to Skye, too. I do find that sleeper service quite interesting. A through train from London but it suddenly becomes a local service once it gets into northern Scotland. I do wonder, is this line the only one you can get directly on a train in London all year round that stops somewhere by request? The only other ones I can think of are the summer-only London Paddington to Pembroke services which I think also stop by request at some of the smaller stations like Saundersfoot.

That conductor at the beginning asking if they had tickets and where they were going. You'd think everyone working for the British rail system would know who Geoff and Vicki are at this point. 6:15 you should have filmed the banavie swing bridge. Whenever a boat is coming down the canal and needs to pass under the bridge, the controller has to call scotrail and see if there is a train coming. In addition, it has a 5mph speed limit.
