I had a character that was the moral compass of the party. Uh'Laag Dogson. CG Fighter Half Orc. Uh'Laag was brutally strong, and had decent wisdom, but the intelligence of a paving brick. The thing about him was that he always strived to do the right thing. He was first in line in battle. He was the last to retreat, covering for his friends. He had no fear. Uh'Laag, eventually multi classed to a fighter/cleric. Further, he was a "Maker" as an ability. He had a knack to be able to manufacture and or repair any innate item he had seen. So here's this 6'5", 350lbs Half Orc that can help fight off a group of knolls, heal injured party members, and fix the wagon's wheel. In my humble opinion, a great party member.

Stuff like this is the reason why I've given up on my dream of ever being a player again. At least when I'm DMing I can filter the players myself so I can make sure the group is going to have a good time. If I'm joining a random group it's a crapshoot and 8 times out of 10 it's a situation like this so I'd rather DM a group than spend the time being frustrated/miserable/searching for a group

I feel that, been a Forever GM for a very long time and I have run countless campaign till close with players in high spirits. But the very few times I am lucky enough to play I find I am not lucky at all and I leave or the game crumbles from enabling GM's and toxic players, not all are bad though. I wouldn’t say give it up completely. Just learn how to screen your games better. There’s things that the DM asks of you and things YOU should bring up to the DM and players. Because even as a DM, you can have a crapshoot of games with a good DM and terrible players. If you do feel the urge to play again, ask the DM how they vet their players. If they just let people come and go, it may be a crapshoot. Ask them for a quick scene to set up expectations the tone of the story. DMs should strive to help the players have fun in equal shares. And the players should at least have a common goal in mind when making their character motivations. And yeah, don’t go into random games expecting a good story- 8 times out of 10, they’re going to be crapshoots. You may be lucky to find a group who miraculously works together but don’t walk by luck of the draw or desperation- walk by knowing what you’re getting into. Sorry this turned into an unwarranted rant, I have kind of realized that I am in the throes of my own horror story. And it sucks…

Well, once you establish a good group, as the DM, maybe you can approach the group, and say, "Does anyone in this group want to DM for a while?" After all, finding the good group is key. Once you have that, you can mix things up to your heart's content.

*Wow.... That was heart-wrenching!* I've unfortunately been in a few scenarios with a player with main character syndrome as well and had to leave a bit like Fizzerband did but without a lesson being taught. When a player hogs the spotlight, items, and talks over/ invalidates characters it only makes it worse when a DM enables them. I'm sharing this so many others can be aware and grow as people too.

This wizard was a victim of some kind of favoritism. The fighter was clearly overpowered and the DM was a gutless coward for not putting their foot down. Just because a role is successful doesn't mean something still cannot go wrong. An obvious lie should fail when caught in it. The DM should be the final word, every single time.

I am a firm believer that high persuasion does NOT equal mind control. And am sickened on how some characters with a high charisma and lenient/favored DM get to just control the actions and perceptions of practically everyone they come across. Even when caught in blatant lies and still manage to talk their way out.
@bragnir

@@crowsenpai5625 PhB literally agrees with you there. A successful (even nat 20) persuasion or deception roll doesn't mean you get the desired outcome- just the best *possible* one. Keyword here, being "possible". Like, at some point, the townspeople believe their beloved fighter and hero has been impersonated / mind-controlled and that's why he's spouting nonsense now.

@@bragnir Here's a saying that goes: You jump a 500 foot cliff.. you roll a nat 20. You jump 80 feet.. then die of falling damage into the cliff. Just cause you rolled a D20.. doesn't mean you gain god powers. (unless cleric with divine intervention) This is the logic you need to tell people. the whole nat 20/great rolls do not always mean you get the outcome you want. WIch reminds me of my nat20 rolling barbarian... Who somehow saw through a lich's magic disguise and convinced them to give them a magical scroll of fireball (they were level 3) since the Lich clearly didn't want to be revealed. Then the barbarian decided to push his luck and convince the Lich to "join the party" ...That failed.. not spectaculary.. the Lich was in public trying to hide. But if they succeeded I told my players afterwarts... "What do you think would happen with a Lich in the party? ...Yes they are powerfull but think of it as this. They have their own agenda." Another player said: "They might backstab us at any moment or experiment on us or turn us into a vessel for if they die!" I just smirked at that XD So yea... Nat 20 doesnt mean GODLIKE! Though that party does have alot of money and a fairy dragon as a pet. But I only did that since most of them are new and I want them to have fun. Besides the sorcerer who got the scroll and pet nearly died session 1.... Reason? Rushed into the combat head 1st as a level 1 sorcerer then get Crit attacked by the 1st attack! Going down right away. ....To this day they still havent learned to NOT rush in ahead and frequently get bailed out by allies. Even with pet XD

@@crowsenpai5625 Yeah, an obvious lie versus a natural 20 deception role means the person being lied to, says, "Ahahah! I see what you're doing there. Good joke! Now, on to the business at hand. I can plainly see that X happened, and we need to figure out where to go from here." As in, Natural 20 means they laugh about your deception, rather than being as righteously angry as they normally would be. Or, you want to parkour your way up a 150 foot slick and smooth wall. You get a Natural 20, which means you fall in a graceful and impressive acrobatic twist and stick the landing, making everyone around you erupt in cheers and applause, taking no damage. You still can't get up the 150 foot wall, but the Nat 20 means you don't die on the drop.

never kill a player without a reasonable narative. a dm should guide the players but the players have to choose their actions themselves. but saying "you want this cool stuff, convince me why you should have it at level 1" and maybe throw in some disadvantages for the charcter too. maybe the armor has some curse that the wearer can't ride while wearing it or the horse is willfull and to ride it while in armor requires a check and if you fail you get thrown off. there are many ways you could balance the indifference out. but never outright kill a character by declaring it with the power of the dm.

Recently we added a Paladin and bard to our party and so Paladin started with a mount (chocobo with axe beak stat block). Also got decent armor. This was fine by our group though. Our cleric player had just left the party due to their own circumstances and so our tiny party had whittled down to just me, a ranger, and our wizard. Before anyone gets up in arms thinking this is favoritism, it wasn’t. We decided as a group, during the new players’ session 0, that this type of thing was ok considering the level they were joining us at, which was 4. They didn’t have any magic items and were allowed to pick items from the phb with a gold starting to better simulate the level difference than most adventure starting games. This was actually a good set of people to get. Our group was already roleplay heavy and these two ended up being amazing roleplayers too. Paladin and I even worked on, during their session 0, of weaving our backstories together. Dm has actually been inspired by all the roleplay lately and is planning to implement more backstory ties into the narrative for all of us and had us write out more detailed ones. This is actually because almost all, except the Paladin, roleplayed that we had some type of connection with twins. The wizard has twin younger siblings, the bard is looking for their twin who ran away from home, and my character’s twin died a long time ago during a power struggle of three royal factions. The Paladin is even tied in to the twinning since this is the incident that ties Paladin to my ranger’s backstory. I just am bringing this all up because I want to say how grateful I am for my dnd group. I get to roleplay and it’s fun, even during the tense or sad moments, and I have a good group of strangers I fell in with that love to roleplay and whom love to roleplay with me. The dm is also knowledgeable and fair and encourages us to weave our stuff together and work together. And we do! It’s just awesome.

This reminds me of the one time I focused hard on roleplay over gameplay. It was because gameplay wise, I was ignored and effectively exiled. Until they thought they'd need me. I opted to have my character care for a child who was completely screwed in life, and I wanted to ensure the child lived. The players all tried to harass me, and I made it clear to the DM I wasn't budging, so they removed me from initiative, and focused purely on the fight. I then muted my mic, as I listened in on the fight going on.

10:43 YIRBEL LIVES! AAAGh! Now i’m self conscious about how slow I type during rps! I think I can usually crank out about 2-3 paragraphs within ten minutes on discord. I might be if I didn’t only have tablet but it still irks me.

Fizzerban, wherever you are, I hope you're ok (IRL especially). You're needed in this world, and others. * makes notes to put the legend of Fizzerban into a bard's tale ingame so other players know *

we are all one. we understand the darkness best, after seeing the brilliant light together with the darkness. we see the contrast. if you didnt see the contrast between fizzerband and zegnev at the beginning, then you could only see it if the contrast got bigger. kinda like our time now, lots of people think some things are ok, when they really arent, but as the injustice becomes more clearly seen, the more people know without a doubt that something evil happened.

Yeah I see a lot of this being the DM's fault. Like yes Zinan was trash, but he was extremely enabled trash. Also so many parts that as a DM I disagree with. Persuasion against other players, loot hoarding, zero consequences for so many horrible actions, bullying another player. So so much stuff. And yeah "we're new players" that excuse doesn't fly with me. Having zero moral compass or anything you're basically in the same camp as death camp guards. Again a lot of that goes on to the DM. Like four sessions in I had my players surrounded by guards after ignoring two warnings to not kill in the city. I gave them an out, but it was a not so subtle showing that there are consequences to actions.

I hope Fizerban is still playing with REAL players and this group stopped inflicting their stupidity and bs on another group ever. I wonder who was gobbling whom's balls, was it the DM or Zened.

I will be honest, I got a million flashbacks to all the murderhobo pc playing people I ever met when I heard Zined say that pebble line. A lot of people will abuse the fact that they are in an online group to get away with horrible in character actions and sh*t, because the distance makes them bold. People (or rather that kind of person) don't play nicer when they are playing at a physical table next to other people, they play worse when its online. It's something I've seen repeatedly over the years. People basically strongarming a party etc while being inhumane to npcs and sh*t making the players uncomfortable.

Ya know Fizzerban may have just helped me flesh out a god in the pantheon I’m creating. I didn’t know how to write a truly sacrificial and selfless character in an impactful way that gets not just your attention but gets you in your feelings in such a way. Even if it was never intended that’s probably what makes this that much more impactful. Literally the truest form of sacrifice without falling to evil means or revenge. I mean to be frank revenge against the power gamer in this story was my first thought. Not selflessness like this player. Hope he’s ok.

Opinion: a Roll in persuasion can only persuade someone/something to do something they'd possibly do, may it be as abstract a concept As persuading a halfling to mount a Black Dragon . If it would be something that person would never do under no circumstances whatsoever no amount of persuasion will change that.

op makes himself sound like he was an innocent newbie watching another player ruin fizzerban's experience, a bit way too much that I'm lead to believe that op might be more toxic during the campaign that he's painting himself. Basically the toxic player's their scapegoat and he can come off as this level headed guy that didn't know better. good writing though.
