Notes from a NG Human Idiot; Actually, this just happened recently in the group. Bit of background here: We as a group have been running a D&D 5e game ever since it came out, and we've been wanting to branch out a bit. I recently bought the Blades in The Dark RPG(nice system with a neat setting, i'd recommend it as a 2nd RPG system for any group.Just not my type of group, as you'll unfortunately see...) to try to elevate this. Ounce we got done with going over PC creation and worked through the first example senario, i started running it. 20 MINUTES into it, my Ork player get's double-crossed by my Edgelord who THEN get's "accidentally" killed by my Roleplayer, who get's set-up and arrested for it all by my Casual who's character then DIES by a bobby-trap set up earlier by the Ork Player. Needless to say that, after that debacle, i've decided not to use this as a back-up system for my group and will keep hunting around.... May your Pantheon ever favor you, Baron Trevelyan of Restenford

Something happened with a player that is no longer in our group. I managed to make everyone literally laugh him out of the game. We were representing our kingdom at a crossroads with two other factions. I start taking a bath in the river as my Tortle Druid does, weirding all three factions out. Then the wizard tries to use Suggestion on the enemy leader to get him to make peace. It fails, and the leader just laughs. The wizard tries to go invisible, at which point I stand up and decide I'm not letting this guy start a war. So I cast Faerie Fire on him. He fails his dex save, and I turn him pink. All three armies laughed, making him rage quit. All three armies made peace after that, seeing that I was genuinely trying to mediate. It was one of the most stressful, and hilarious moments in all my D&D experiences (though I'm only 23).

Actually in my game the local Druid order had the party kill these marauding necro/sorcerers and plant these special oak seeds in their bodies to grow new Treants that they had killed (the sorcerers started the treants killing each other but the party had to kill them cause they were made to attack the party, so pardon them for the act despite the situation, the druids wanted them to grow new ones from the bodies of the ones that started it) Halfway through this ordeal, the party Ranger convinces a couple others in the group that the Necromancer they are traveling with looks and acts and does the same things as the ones they are hunting, she would make a sufficient sacrifice since she was the one that laid the killing blow to the treant. When they went to assassinate her in her sleep, the rogue who was buddy buddy with the necro prayed for divine intervention, a solid % roll and a local Time Stop spell went off as the god of rogues steps in front of just the rogue asking for help, she lays the scene, asks for help. He tells her the next treasure horde SHE finds will pay the debt for his help, she agrees, he saves the Necromancer's spirit cause the act of the murder was too late to stop, but the soul was taken to the god of death, who favored this caster as she was a devout follower. They planted the seeds in her body and ran... fate smiled... the ranger and their new barbarian crashed into an Orc WAR BAND and... I own their character sheets. As for the Necro, she was brought back from the tree that rapidly grew from her body, born anew, new gear and a new goal... she only held the rogue as a close friend since she's the one that helped, she vowed that all others would only be shields and if they got in her way, whatever happened was not her fault. 5 miles in a circle around that tree was a dead decayed forest, she has since built a tower on it and made it her fortress, went through the Lich ritual to increase her power. Watching from the DM seat as I helped deal with the aftermath of each action was... fun, so much fun. Watching how they all play on the fly when something like that happens, all you can do is just think on the fly with them and set the course for what follows
@fhuber75075 жыл бұрын
Many games STARTED with PCs not liking each other... Most recently a particular fighter that the DM allowed to attack any party member he wanted, but we were not allowed to respond. I left that campaign. ****** If I had been running that necromancer, I would have hoarded the gems with the trapped souls and fed them to the phylactery when convenient to me. There was no good reason to ever let them out to be resurrected. There would have been purpose to the end of their existence by feeding my never ending quest for power.

Yeah, they're more about summoning masses of Undead, or by having one or two powerful ones, but with spells like "Greater Mass Harm" (20d12 damage at level 20, and a potential for 1,440 damage over 2 rounds) they can be a very terrifying nightmare to sick on the party....

@Oskanwhitchfather5 жыл бұрын
@@johnnysizemore5797 In 3.5e you can't just take the "Counterspell" spell. You have to spend the same spell, with a readied action, to counter an enemy spell. For instance, lets say you wanted to counter my Fireball. You'd have to ready an action to do so, make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + the spell’s level) DC 18 in this case, cause 15+3=18. This check is a free action. If the check succeeds, you correctly identify the opponent’s spell and can attempt to counter it. If the check fails, you can’t do either of these things. You then have to use one of your Fireballs to counter mine. And since "Greater Harm" is only on the Cleric (and evil one at that, since in 3.5e Good Clerics can't cast Inflict Wounds/Harm spells cause they're evil/negative energy spells) and Dread Necromancer Spell lists, and "Mass Harm" (which is Mass Greater Harm in functionality... Idk why it's not named Mass Greater Harm) is _only_ on the Dread Necromancer Spell List, you're going to have a hard time counterspelling that. Meaning, my Undead will get a massive heal (potentially yours as well), and you'd take a massive amount of damage. Not to mention, your Inflict Wounds/Harm Spells would heal me, since at level 20 I'd be a Lich automatically cause of the class. In other words, I win 9 times out of 10.
@Oskanwhitchfather5 жыл бұрын
@@johnnysizemore5797 Now, there are some exceptions to this. Light/Daylight and Darkness counter each other, and Dispel Magic *_can_* be used to counterspell, but it can't counterspell everything. Improved (or is it Greater?) Dispel Magic is better, but if you want a perfect catch-all Dispel-esque spell, just use Mordenkainen's Disjunction when you get access to it, or perhaps an Anti-Magic Field spell. That shuts down casters _hard..._ Of course, it can be taken down with a Mordenkainen's Disjunction as well, so even AMF isn't perfect.

Necromancer: It’s the spooky month The party: uh oh
@nubmuffin67545 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did do something like this. I was playing a Pathfinder campaign and created a vigilante (avenger). My entire party consisted out of characters without morals ( a rogue that would steal everything, including from her own party, an alchemist that on multiple occasions attempted to plant drugs on my body so I'd get arrested, and a Samurai that was exiled for having no honor.) On multiple occasions they'd make absolutely awful decisions. I'd try to be the voice of reason, but it only got me more and more hate from the rest of the party. This eventually escalated months later when an item dropped that my character had been looking for since the campaign started. A belt of physical perfection. I was the one that found it, luckily. Knowing there'd be a fight over it (and knowing the rogue would attempt to steal it of me) I told the DM I told no one that I found it, equipped it and would pretend it was the same belt as always. Now here is the thing, as a vigilante I played 2 characters. The Bruce Wayne character and the Batman character. To disguise myself and in order to bullshit my way into and out of any situation I had a very high charisma. My party still thought I was this goody two shoes (mary sue) fighter and had no idea I was secretly hoarding items, armor, weapons and had amassed enough funds to get my strength and con to about 36/34 and that was without the belt. I had reached a level of physical strength, constitution and dexterity that rivaled a god. (42 strength, 40 con, 34 dex) and I had several potions and items that gave temp buffs to make that go even higher. My headband gave +6 to wisdom, charisma and intelligence. Effectively making me far above average on all levels. They had no idea. I KNEW the rogue would attempt to meta-game. She had been doing it the entire campaign. So, in game while we were in the tavern, the rogue decided to roll "perception" on me to figure out if I had something new on me. Unfortunately she crit, unfortunately for her. She figured out I had a different belt on. Now, any sane person would not immediately assume that this was a magical belt or any better than I'd been wearing before, but like I said, she loved to meta-game. The rogue called me out and demanded to know where I got this belt from. I replied saying it was none of her business. The rest of the party quickly followed suit and began to accuse me of keeping treasure, money and other items for myself. In fact, all items I had gotten were acquired by me via my vigilante behavior. I hoarded a fortune by going through whatever city we stayed in at night to rob and steal from rich bad guys. This was highly dangerous, but I got lucky with my rolls and only once got into some serious trouble. All in all, no treasure that we amassed together had been hoarded by me. The party demanded I showed them my items, I declined. I stated I had no reason to steal from them and pointed at the rogue. "Out of all people, you, who we've caught several times stealing from our own party, you dare to accuse me of such a deplorable act!". I stated I wanted to duel her and would do so in the morning in front of an official of the city. (basically imploring game of thrones rules, trial by combat). The rogue convinced the rest of the party to murder me in my sleep that night. Something I had anticipated. I placed several traps towards my bed room and placed in my actual bed the paralyzed body of a bandit I would catch that evening before bed. The rogue, samurai and Alchemist all worked together to get through my traps and eventually killed the bandit in my bed. They took my (half emptied out, bag of holding, they did not know I had 3) and only found stuff that they knew I had. The rogue scoffed and stated "Guess he wasn't lying, ah well. Now its ours". A fun item to have, is an item called: Clockwork Bug - it allows you to record up to an hour of sound in a 20 foot radius. That morning, I showed up at the guild office (which prohibited murder, especially of your own guild members). I was disguised as my batman persona and explained that they had guild members that had just committed murder. I gave them the clockwork bug as proof. They quickly figured out that my "fighter" had been murdered for greed. The entire guild sent out a bounty and they were quickly hunted down within that same session. The samurai demanded to fight 1 on 1 in an honorable duel (which he of course did not honor) and died fairly quick. The Alchemist was arrested and taken to jail. The rogue lasted longer and managed to run almost out of the city, but failed a stealth roll (nat 1) and got caught right in front of the gate. My character showed up in his alternative persona and demanded to fight the rogue solo and if the rogue won, she'd be allowed to go. (trial by combat). The rogue jumped at the chance, figuring she should be able to beat me. We rolled for initiative, she had a dex of 32 and figured she'd easily out rol me. With all my items, including some nice feats, I had nearly 50% more initiative then her. I easily out rolled her and went first. I activated my boots of speed, got within distance to strike and struck 3 times. I was duel wielding sword and shield (nice vigilante feat) and ended up stunning her and dealing more than half her hp in just the first attack. She missed dramatically and I used a swift action to bash her against the wall. I rolled a grapple check and succeeded. I began to choke her and lifting her from the ground. She tried an escape artist check, but failed. Never even got close. I rolled for damage (suffocation) and rolled max damage, she was now almost passing out. The rest of the guild, guards and city folk were looking on in horror as I choked the life out of this person in public. Two turns later I managed to snap her neck and threw her body to the floor. Out of character my fellow players were not amused. The person who played the rogue was livid. I honestly didn't care. The guild honored my "fighter" character with a ceremony and buried the bandit body (thinking it was me) as a hero and my alternative persona walked away with all the loot the party had on them, as payment for catching these murderers. The campaign ended early, with the rogue and samurai dead and the alchemist being executed. My character left to fight crime solo as mother fucking batman.

@@FlyingDominion Yeah, I find the experience point cost was enough to make it extremely rare for players to craft their own magic items. To encourage crafting, I took the power components idea from an issue of Dragon magazine; in which magical beasts or special creatures could be harvested for their body parts, some of which could offset some of the experience point cost for magical items. For example, demon blood could offset about 10-20xp cost for making scrolls when used as ink. It's a little more complicated, but it really enhances the game when you have players excited to take down a basilisk for its hide and don't care about gold, but which organs they can find. Amusingly, you'll see players try to kill beasts gingerly, trying not to damage the valuable parts of the beast. "Avoid the eyes, those are worth money!" "Don't hit the torso, the lungs can be used to make a potion of water breathing!"

PvP is fine as long as the table agrees that they want to have it in their game. Otherwise I'm shutting it down whether or not I'm the GM. It's never up to two players whether or not it's okay, it's the table as a whole that needs to agree. I've had very few tables where players got angry at each other, so luckily not something I've actually done. I have however asked people to "get a grip", "stop disrupting the game" etc. etc. which has generally (with a few exceptions) worked out fine - you just need one person to speak up and then the rest of the table usually quickly follows. I'm not to proud to say that I've been the problem player myself a few times though - we all have bad days :) On the flipside I've seen a lot of in-character party conflicts and sometimes there needs to be a character death or exodus of some kind. In those cases the affected player along with the DM have just narrated the table through it instead of actually rolling combat dice. This stuff is nice, it brings an other dimension to the game. I think I prefer it that way, but if the whole table wants PvP I would be fine with that as well :)

I was dumbfounded when he first accused me, and enraged when I died and learned he killed me. This is a condensed retelling, but know that I have never been played so hard. It was the best! Now I always blatantly say I can't wait to kill him in that game as a running joke (and I really will). I was playing a halfling necromancer and the dm had a few homebrew elements in, i took advantage of them because i knew the party would eventually suss out that i was a necromancer. Understand, there were homebrewed elements to this game. I had a haste spell tattoo on his back, a single use magic ring of greater invisibility on the left hand, and a single use amulet of mage armor on the right. All three had a verbal trigger. The dm allowed me to have the dragon mark of passage. When the inevitable happened my halfling smiled and spoke the trigger "its show time". He was now moving over 100ft per turn. with mage armor, haste, and a maxed out dex, his AC was 20. Being invisible attacked were rolled at disadvantage against him. The party was slowly debilitated and eventually killed with only one successful hit landing against him. Necromancers, when played with debuffs and buffs instead of skeletal armies, will never fall.

This is 5e, by the way. For a twentieth level campaign, our party was exploring a lost continent, called Sinthrall, said to be the Battlefield of the Gods. Aedulous The Eternal, High Elf Paladin of Vengance, wielding a cross between a Defender and a Dragon Slayer and a Vorpal Sword longsword, with max stats for Dex and Strength, with well over 100 hitpoints. But the best part was his Epic Boon. Each character had one of the Epic Boons from the DM guide, and I chose Immortality. The thing is though, that our DM decided that the Boon of Immortality also made it so that should you be killed, you were resurrected the following dawn. We had been sent to locate the Spire Drake, a primeval dragonlike being that had supposedly killed about twelve of the gods on its own. With insane bonuses from my sword, I was dealing an upward of 100 damage on one turn. The rest of the party was sort of mad at me, for creating a “too powerful” character. The DM said that it was perfectly fine. See, they had never realized that I could be resurrected, so when I died, they were glad that it was a “fair fight”. They retreated about two rounds later. That next morning, as I descended in a beam of light provided by Silgin, my primary god, my party was shocked. I returned to the lair of the Spire Drake, my party still incredulous. We roll initiative. Nat 20. I make an attack, being first to go. Nat 20. I proceed to deal 148 damage, killing the creature instantly. (I rolled almost max damage from the Longsword, Vorpal Bonus, and Dragon Slayer, doubled by the Critical hit.) As we plunder it’s vast treasure hoard, we all realize we will definitely need several ships to take the gold back to the mainland to even make a dent in the amount of wealth in this creature’s lair. As I pick up the silver armor of Ozish, the dead god, which has an AC of 25, and no stealth disadvantages, our semidivine ranger strikes me in the back of the neck with a flaming arrow. I quickly pull on the armor, and die. They had forgotten that I could resurrect. The next morning, the party was still asleep when I resurrected. I proceeded to burn all but one of their boats, gathered about 5 Bags of Holding full of solid Platinum, easily more than enough to buy myself a kingdom or three, and sailed back to the mainland. I became a High King, and started a new Empire, and ruled as a benevolent king for the rest of eternity. Our next campaign was based around a group of anarchists (me included) trying to overthrow an immortal god king. The other players were still good people, they just didn’t like overpowered characters. It was great fun.

He stayed and protected the party on whatever whim it was, and when betrayed they were all killed, but not prevented from being resurrected, their souls not forced to serve him for eternity, but eventually set free. Just like irl, he put up with it cause it wasn't really anything significant until they tried to kill him, which would usually spark tension in game and irl, but both the character and player were calm and didnt drag it out

*We Got An Ogre!* This is fresh from my group's D&D session. Backstory: 5th Edition - Group having dealt with a training dungeon, gets hired by a merchant to help deliver goods. He and his assistant rode ahead to let the guy's partner know we were coming, only to get caught by goblins lead by a bugbear - saved the assistant, but no sign of employer. We did drop off the goods and got some loot for slaying the goblins. Anyways, due to some of the party staying at an inn (o.o.c. - 2 had tickets to a Hyde concert, and I'm not sure about the others), four of us, myself (a human sorcerer with Draconian ancestry), a half-orc bard, a wood elf rouge, and another wood elf (I forget class) checked the area, and went to report our client's disappearance to their brother - said brother and their friend had been murdered/captured by a dangerous gang. We were told to talk to an older Adventurer, who said that they'd help if we dealt with an Undead issue. We encountered a Necromancer living in a tent who admitted to leading the Undead, but he was merely investigating the ruins. He told us that he was having issues with some orcs however. (Meanwhile, the rouge keeps trying to steal anything not nailed down - and gets money/loot as a result on many occasions, which gets to be rather funny at times.) We went and our half-orc bard talked to an orc sentry in Orcish, and persuaded the sentry to let us talk to their boss. The boss, an ogre named Mog, tells us that the Necromancer kicked them out of their territory., which turns out to be true. We then go after the Necromancer, with Mog and half a dozen orcs in tow, the rouge being a nuisance, and distracting the guy, when he hits the rouge with a magic missile attack. I use my own - 11 damage. Then Mog ripped up the tent, and used his club to smash the Necromancer to a bloody pulp. We get some money, and give Mog a piece of gold as a token of appreciation. Thing was, the party was supposed to fight Mog and his orcs, and get paid by the necromancer, not befriend the ogre and have him smash (or squish as a few of us say, with a laugh) the necromancer. I just wonder if I should convince the rest to drag Mog along to help us fight the gang in the next session. Now, back to real life - the group is a great group. I'm fairly new to D&D in general, and know very little of the ins and outs. That being said, the main DM (who is currently taking a bit of a break at DMing until he figures out a few things in his storyline, with a secondary DM leading the described storyline), and the other veteran players, are willing to help new people make their characters, as well as explain the rules, to say nothing about loaning out dice to them that don't have any. In fact, I look forward to the next session, in order to see what happens. I also can't wait for the main campaign to pick up again - I wonder what my human fighter will end up doing. Then there's the other guys I have waiting for the next campaign, or next secondary campaign.

Another thing that has proven to be useful is the fact that I have "Inspiring Leadership" (or whatever it's called), meaning that I tend to, after each Short or Long Rest, give an Inspiring Speech, which grants my teammates some extra hit-points, +7 at the second level. Very useful, as it means my teammates are that much harder to kill, and is real good for those with naturally low hit-points anyways.

God this reminds me of an older character I had in 3.5. A dragonborn arcane assassin. Specializing in trapmaking and a dm who loved throwing stuff at us while we slept and had one person on watch. One of these encounters came up with my character on first watch of the night but by the time the others were awake and ready to fight, the six trolls and their small horde of goblins had died to some tripwire firebombs and deadfalls made from lumber I had hacked down. But, being the ass he was famous for being, our orc fighter decided to get uppity for being woken up and not being able to fight anything for the third time that week. The scuffle ended faster than his player could smile as my dragonborn was also lvl 18 whilst he was only 17, one lvl short of what his class needed that could have tripped me up. He tried to cleave me in two with his battleaxe whilst I simply sidestepped and cast arcane blast at point blank. He lost all of his health thanks to a really nice damage roll on my end and I left him a smoking heap of meat in front of his now smoldering tent. Then my character ate him as he hadn't eaten yet that day. (Before y'all go nuts, my character was a tribal where eating a fallen foe is considered an honor to the enemy)

They earned my respect by being extremely helpful and willing to teach rather than godding or OPing with an egotistical attitude. Just as much as the DM is important, the players in your party are as well.

Quick side note before I get in the story. My DM was breast Questing one of the members of the party in the end he did succeed but that's not the point. When I figured out what he was doing, I decided to make the most of it and slowly acquire power. Now here is what happened. The game is set in a home-brewed 3.5 dungeon so massive that its own realm of reality. Where everything is not right. The party was made up of a psionic ranger who insisted he was never over powered. A non denominational Monk (Girl the DM was lusting after.) and me the rogue with such a long name they just called me Phil. Well as the game progress we gather some unique magical items including a deck of many things. At one point the denominational monk pulls the wish card and gets maximum amount of wishes. Her 3 wishes were to give everyone a new deck of many things and to remove all the bad cards from them. Not a problem at all right. Well the ranger immediately pulls a card and get 2 wishes and becomes psionic. And wishes for a ring of one wish. I pull a card later in the campaign and I get my wishes and roll a 4 so I get all of mine. I wished to gain all the ability of the assassin's class which the DM says will cost me all my wishes. No problem I have the master mask prestige class and I thought it would go well with the other. The game goes on I have heart ripper in my back pocket the whole time never able to use it because we keep fighting undead. Till the end of the campaign in which we fight the source of all evil in the realm which is a giant Moon. The monk kills it no time and we escape. Well then come the end of the dungeon. Apparently the deity of this dungeon is cursed. Only by a new Deity being chosen can he be released from his torment. The new Deity will run the dungeon until they wish to leave. In which a new deity need to be chosen again. Since my party I defeated the evil Moon we three were up for godhood with in the dungeon. But only one of us could become a god. By killing the other two temporarily. They were to be brought back when the fight was over. Before the fight the monk and the ranger are talking shit because clearly they are the most powerful ones in the team I never can do any damage. Least not on the scale of the ranger and monk. So there we stood 120 feet from each other as initiative was rolled. I get a Nat 20. In our game if you get a Nat 20 on initiative you get a surprise round before the start of initiative. I had the highest score and perks that increased my bonus like nobody's business. I know what I need to do so I use my master of masks Wizard form and use dimension door to behind ranger and heart rip him. He rolls to save and botches. He drops to the ground immediately and I end my surprise round with the Ranger cursing me screaming profanity. Then it's normal initiative. I use another dimension door. And appear in front of the non-denominational Monk. Using heart ripper one more time I drop the monk. My rouge is made a god and I bring back my friends. Both of whom wonder why I never used it in combat. To which I point out that the DM said it wouldn't work on Undead in his game. Moral of the story is this. Never overlook the little guy in the back he might just be more powerful than you think.

I feel this, my prior soldier palladin characture has little respect for our druid whom often does little in combat(probably because he is kinda new) I also tease our ranger frequently for his clumsy fighting (nat 1s forndays) however u still respect him and have put in a great deal to help his characture with things I know matter to him.

Wow that’s a masterful way to deal with greedy players. I am brand new to dnd and in the two games I have played I have always been a healer/tank never had a problem with a pesky fae bugging me XD

This is such a good story, I'm writing this comment after my 5th time watching this video. A true display of skill, experience, and what 5e is missing with the oh so rare save or die spells and that wierd thing called concentration.

I now understand why magic based players are so terrifying.

The only time I had PvP was a one shot with existing characters in a battle Royale type setting where the reward was one wish granted by Accerack and then because our characters had different moral views on whether or not we should do a certain task for Strahd
