The difference between supper and dinner is the time of day, dinner was more towards lunch time ( late lunch) while supper is later in the day. Dinner is the brunch version of an evening meal. Breakfast 5-8 Brunch 9-11 Lunch 12-3 Dinner 3-6 Supper 7-11

When I worked at the nursing home when I was 16 in Kansas we called it Breakfast, Diner and Supper. One time I was telling a girl to come to “diner” at 5 and she went off on me about how it was “supper and diner was at noon!”… I still call it dinner…
@moon-jl1sp2 жыл бұрын
I alternate between supper and dinner depending on what I'm feeling, but I usually say dinner. But for my grandparents, on Sunday's it's breakfast, dinner, supper. You eat breakfast, go to church, then have Sunday dinner with the family once church ends. Also just to defend all the dinner as the middle meal ppl, the Thanksgiving meal is eaten at lunchtime, but no one calls it Thanksgiving lunch, we call it Thanksgiving dinner.

Dinner was the BIG meal of the day. Lunch was a light meal at mid day. Supper was a light meal in the evening. So M-F was usually dinner in the evening (due to work and school); but Sunday was dinner after church (often pot roast) with a light supper. Grew up in the mid west.

To comment on the order of the meal orders throughout the day; I live in the UK specifically England and I would say that the reason some people call the meal at mid-day Dinner is that it's hot food. I would also say if you have dinner at mid-day, the meal after would be tea consisting of cheese boards and bread and other foods like that. Also, I would say between Breakfast and mid-day meals there is Elevenses which consist of tea/ coffee and a biscuit. So I would say there are two different orders: Breakfast Elevenses Lunch Dinner Snack or Breakfast Elevenses Dinner Tea Snack

In reference to Serena saying that she doesn’t speak on the subject of retirement with her husband: I felt it was more that she finds it difficult because she doesn’t want to stop playing at the level she does but knows that at some point she will. Tennis has been the center of her world for essentially her entire life. I can’t imagine that’s an easy conversation to have with anyone. I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t want to have the conversation with her. From everything I’ve seen about their relationship, he’s extremely supportive of her personally and her career as well as with anything she wants to do both on and off the tennis court.

You know when you say the same word over and over so it sounds weird? That's something I wish I was immune to!
Dinner in the uk is different to supper. For a start, it is breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea then dinner then supper.. Afternoon tea was said to have been invented by the Countess of Sandwich while she was with Queen Victoria one day. Because in those days they had lunch early and dinner was very late at night around 7pm then supper was anytime after that. The Queen got very hungry in the afternoon one day whilst with her friend, so they had a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Sandwiches are believed to also have been eaten. Yes it was an Earl of Sandwich who the word for the meal is named afterwards. I do think that a proper British style sandwich should be made on this channel one day.

The "breakfast, dinner, supper" thing is a french thing I believe. I don't remember which is which, but between Quebec and France - one says dinner and supper and one says lunch and dinner. At least that's what I was told in French class in high school. 🤷 EDIT: I just looked it up and in France they say "le petit-déjeuner (breakfast), le déjeuner (lunch), and le dîner (dinner)." And in Quebec they say "le déjeuner (breakfast), le dîner (lunch), le souper (dinner)"

So the dinner/supper debate in my opinion should not be a debate. If you were a family that were farmers you would have 4 meals. You would have breakfast, lunch, supper was a small meal for the farmers to have a break and then have time to go back to the fields until dark. Then the last meal, most likely the largest with the family living with you, was dinner. So the debate doesn’t really make sense. They are both evening meals.
